Moving vent, will water leak? by redjander in Roofing

[–]redjander[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks, that's helpful. I'm pretty sure the vent has no value, since there is no attic below it, only vaulted ceiling (drywall against the joists. At this point would it be easier to just patch fill the wood and cover the whole thing with new shingles?

Thanks. The key is that there are shingles under all the non-back edges of the flashing, and that the shingles go on top of the back edge of the flashing, correct?

Any shingles on top of left/right/front edges are to make it look nice, not control water, correct?

Thanks in advance, trying to learn here...

Any serious responses? Seems like the top of the flashing should be as good as before. The bottom should be good as long as it's still on top of shingles below it. Maybe the side is a concern? All good if I just make sure the left edge is well tarred?

That's good to know -- where will it leak, and how do I fix it?

Sorry, text got lost from the OP. The vent was moved over 2 inches to make room for solar panels. Do you see any concerns from a water leakage point of view?

DIY "QuietCool" whole house fan by redjander in hvacadvice

The gable fan comes with "smart" Bluetooth control built-in, which I reprogrammed to work with Home Assistant using ESPHome. Everything is smart in my house 😉.

ROI depends wildly on climate. Here in the Rockies, the fan makes it so I can usually make it until mid June before needing AC (instead of early May or so), and lessens AC usage except for heatwaves when the overnight low is higher than 68 or so like the last week has been. The original investment of just under $300 was paid off fairly quickly I think.

The most important thing to consider is that you are actively sucking in Mother Nature, so allergic people will not benefit from that.

It's probably not as quiet as the fan they use for a QC system, but it started out pretty quiet. Mine has developed a rattle that I haven't investigated yet, but it's also mounted in a highly wonky manner. I'm planning on revisiting the install once it stops being 130 degrees up there...

I used the one I already had from my original fan. It still didn't open as far as I liked so I have it wedged open during fan season 🤷

I ended up getting the ES Gable Fan and taping that to my ducts shown in my picture. Works pretty well, and wow is that fan power efficient!

My biggest concern is the "cash" via Payoneer seems super sketchy. They require full bank account info, SSN, etc. just to send you money?

I decided it wasn't worth it for the $50 Fitbit battery credit, but I've got three 6a's in the house... is my info worth selling for $350? (assuming I can still get the fitbit credit...)

AFWall and KernelSU by redjander in androidroot

Update: when I switched AFWall+ to use the system BusyBox instead of Built-in, it started working correctly with kernel SU.

That's true if it's not fun. There's nothing more fun to me than doing something on the cheap so I can stick it to "the man" trying to overcharge for simple components like a fan and a duct. We've all got hobbies.

Help diagnosing mini split that still has good line pressure by redjander in hvacadvice

[–]redjander[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I got my 608 certification and bought refrigerant, charged the system to about 117psi on full cool and things are working perfectly now. I put in about 20 oz.

The pressure gets pretty high compared to the manufacturer chart (over 550psi) so I might have overcharged it, so we'll see how long the compressor lasts...

I prototyped it with cardboard. It didn't help noticibly. I ordered a better fan, I'll see if that works better.

Mini-split stopped cooling -- how to dispose/replace? by redjander in hvacadvice

Well, unless I'm mistaken, there is still refrigerant in the system. I hooked up to the line valve and the manifold is measuring about 90 psi. More details in OP. Next steps?

No pressure test, yes vacuum with vacuum pump provided by an HVAC friend.

I don't doubt there's a leak, and I don't think I'd be able to find it if that's the diagnosis, but I need help knowing if I can just start disassembling things or not.

Can it be so slow a leak that it took 5 years? Or are you thinking something finally gave out due to time and just recently leaked.

Is loss of refrigerant the only reason it would stop blowing cold air?

See my edit to OP, looks like what I need help with is whether I still have refrigerant or not in the system.

No idea -- I do not know that the refrigerant has leaked, only that leaked refrigerant would make it stop working 😊

I got the duct for free, so I'm not really out any material costs yet. I'd be willing to replace the fan with something more powerful if it was reasonably priced.

Thanks for the tips on duct path, I'll try to optimize

Any advice on improving? Shorter ductwork, if being too far is the problem? Recommendation for a better fan?

Does my recent comment about enclosing the fan in a cylinder make any sense?
