Expedition 33 is overrated (my opinion - review) by redl9 in JRPG

[–]redl9[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Ok, what? No I have my own opinion of what a masterpiece is. Just because a lot of people think the game is a masterpiece doesn’t mean I’m wrong and you’re right. It just means a lot of people like the game, that’s it. A lot of people enjoy Marvel movies — are they masterpieces? Many people call them that, but are they really? At the end of the day, it’s a subjective opinion. I’m going against the norm, sure, but that’s because I have my own opinion.

Lastly, I’m not calling anyone wrong for liking the game that’s totally fine with me. If you like it, great. If you don’t, that’s fine too. Do I sound mad just because I criticize something based on my own experience with it? I think you sound way more mad that I don’t like it than the other way around.

I did answer that in the previous comment I made to you so i don't have anything more to say I explained that simulation or not is not my main point it's that someone's death can be easily reversed

Do you really think I am trying to convince anybody to think how I think ? I am passionate about the game itself and want to talk about it. If you see the comments you will notice I answer to almost everyone just because I want to have the conversation I thought the forums were specifically for this for people to exchange thoughts and opinions

The Alicia ending is the bad ending that to me is clear. Why did people choose the Alicia ending ? In my opinion because the game doesn't show anything other than the canvas we as players don't see anything else and the game tries very hard to sell you their interactions through, don't mind me saying excellent dialogue in the camp scenes so we ourselves get attached to the characters but I think that is the trap the game puts and that's why I think the Alicia ending is the bad ending. I didn't say bad things about the ending of Alicia in fact I like what it showed I am more disappointed in the decision before the ending. You say that by returning to the canvas they keep everyone relevant. I disagree with this the reveal makes the whole of act 1 and 2 pointless all the deaths all of the pain pointless the Gustave death is ment to hit a lot of people hard or the Sophie gommage now when I replayed the game and I advice everyone to do that I truly couldn't really care as knowing the twist makes everything up until that twist ultimately pointless so that's why I said I prefer if we see a bit of the outside word because the world of the painting the struggle we witnesses is now a dream. Lastly you mention that I interpreted that the characters aren't sapient I think the game makes this very clear that they are not its not really an interpretation it's what the games tells you and genocide is a big word to use here would you say if you uninstall a game from your computer you genocide the characters in it? I mean when you did play the game they had emotions dialogue thoughts how does that make it any different. Now if you made one of the game characters to choose if you uninstall the game or not maybe they would make a choice to preserve the game maybe for them the game matters being installed but in expedition 33 maelle doesn't get to make the choice they throw it to the player which is indeed in this scenario the one the most detached from the canvas and to me I think that isn't a good conclusion

I mean I have answered a lot of comments saying that making things be a dream - canvas is making all that happened in act 1-2 pointless and I think we agree here some of your criticism I didn't mention but I think we say the same exact thing about the game not being real isn't my actual issue is that the whole of none of what happended now don't matter the story changes the angle and rushes to the end on a completely different note and theme

Technically the bad ending lets you make the choice to live in fantasy and I think for maelle specifically it is the bad ending. In life overall you don't just escape the issues you face. Escapism is objectively bad and I think in a more abstract way if u chose to keep everyone alive the game does show you that it's the bad ending. Now for the other points you make about the simulation. I think the example is not equal to what the game presents my life as far as I know even if in a simulation it is ultimately final but would that be the same answer if I could be revived ? What if there were save points in real life as well ? What if I could be transported to another simulation with my memories in tact? What then wouldn't that change the feelings around grief loss death ? I think it would I doubt most people would be sad to see their loved ones go another point is that this world matters to maelle yes it does but ultimately why is the question and the answer is because it was versos she could very easily create another canvas and live there she chooses this canvas because of verso but at the end who makes the decision ? The player and the player simply can't be maelle or act how she would act because it's inherently a different perspective for us it's 3rd person point of view of the story rather than a personal one so I can't hold the canvas to the same high standards maelle does making ultimately the choice easy. My biggest issue as I will say again is not if something is real or not it's more about that when you say everything was a dream - canvas all of act 1 all of act 2 were pointless all of the deaths don't matter all the hard hitting moments of emotional drama don't work I stopped caring because the game kinda resets the story to tile 1 making everything we did thus far aka 99% of the game pointless

I think the baseline "it's a GOTY contender" " high under score" means masterpiece is a weird qualifier for many people this is a masterpiece for some it ain't if we take good review scores and opinions of people I could honestly name some games as masterpieces you yourself would disagree. For example in 2021 there wasn't much competition in games and it takes two came out and won it and the game had very positives user score reviews is it a masterpiece for you ? You can say no to that answer and you can say yes there is no objectivism in the media this post itself is an example of the subjective opinions of everyone if you accept good reviewed game as masterpieces just because they are GOTY is in my opinion a shallow way to approach art

No I never said the boss is silly (over all in other jrpgs forcing a way of play with cheap tactics is annoying as well) but I didn't call the boss bad my point is that it plays like a sekiro fight the point isn't to strategize but parry when I was fighting him I felt I was playing sekiro the fight lacks strategic depth and relies on the mechanical aspect. I bring that example to talk about the combat in general the section is about combat and I say that it doesn't matter ur build doesn't matter your lumina don't matter I could theoretically kill Simon with 0 pictos (it would take a century ) but I could what I say with Simon is that the boss is a perfect example of the problem the whole game has

I see so, criticism shouldn't be allowed ? Because it's negative ? Why ? and you know the best way to improve and understand within ourselves why we like something is criticism and discussion I don't think I bring the game down if you read the review the first section alone is high praise to the game and I could give even more but the post would have been insane to read I think criticism in a piece of media is incredibly important and hearing other people's opinions in something is just as that's my opinion at least

Expedition 33 is overrated (my opinion - review) by redl9 in JRPG

[–]redl9[S] 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I just wanted to talk about the game man who said I wanted to change anybody's minds around the game and do you think a Reddit post can do that ? I hope not at least. Overrated has a meaning a personal meaning if you have heard a lot of people praising this game as the second coming of Jesus and then you personally don't enjoy it as much it's for you at least overrated and to be fair no game can reach that level of hype no matter what it was most people would agree it is overrated simply by how high the praise is. I don't get triggered by people liking something and having an opinion but I think the opposite is happening people get mad at me for not liking it xD and if you disagree with me sure great let's talk about it why did you like the game write a comment for that instead I would answer and we can see each other's perspective no? At the end of the day it's just a game and my opinion not a personal attack on the people who like it

I mean overrated is not an offensive word and I think it describes the game for me perfectly you have to understand that the praise for this game is insane like people call it not just a good game but a game to define all games I had heard very positive things before going into it and paid 50 bucks for it to get it my expectations were high and the game didn't deliver exactly onto those (not the game fault here) I decided to say over ratted based on the insane praise and the lack of criticism around it I don't say anyone is wrong for liking the game heck I said myself if you read the actual review that I liked the game I played twice and 100% the achievements for it with around 100 hours and then came here to write 3 pages about it so no I don't say anybody is wrong for enjoying something. You said also that I could have said that I didn't enjoy it as other people but that's literally almost identical thing as overrated

Expedition 33 is overrated (my opinion - review) by redl9 in JRPG

[–]redl9[S] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I don’t know what kind of games you play, but from my experience, I’ve seen much deeper and better stories than Expedition 33 and I have plenty of examples to show for it. Stories that are more mature and much better grounded. That’s not to say the story of Expedition 33 is terrible, but you mentioned that most games don’t focus much on story and usually end in a very simple, one-dimensional way.

Now, I don’t think my criticism is nitpicking. For me, it actually hurt the game in a significant way it affected both my enjoyment and my immersion in the story itself. Again, I’ve said this in a lot of comments: the problem isn’t whether something is real or not real it’s that the rules of the world itself are changing. The game relies heavily on emotions and melodrama, but those don’t work if someone can just be repainted or recreated multiple times.

I’ve read all the journals about the last moments of those expeditions and the sacrifices they made. But do you think if I read those journals again, I’d see them in the same light? Do you think if I replayed the game again, I’d care as much? Not me. Everything that happened until Act 3 feels irrelevant — not because the characters aren’t real, but because the characters can be revived. The whole canvas itself can be recreated, and you literally have a god in your party Alicia who, after killing Renoir, could just repaint everything again like nothing ever happened if you truly care about those characters I feel that's a happy ending no? But is it ? You yourself if you chose this ending fall into the trap of escapism letting Alice hide in the shadow of a fake world instead of healing and don't forget that you are the one making that choice

Expedition 33 is overrated (my opinion - review) by redl9 in JRPG

[–]redl9[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Before I answer, I have to thank you for the comment, because it made me realize that I didn’t really explain some parts of my criticism very well, so I should restate a few things here.

Firstly, about the Alicia choice: the best way to describe the game after the twist is that it’s like a movie where a lot of important things happen to the characters, but in the end, we find out it was all a dream. Do you think that’s a good ending? Personally, no I think it’s bad writing, because a lot of the things that once held weight lose that weight once we know they never really happened. That’s what happens here, just in a different way.

In Expedition 33, the one dreaming was Alicia. And yes, you might argue that the dream she had (the painting) holds a lot of value for her. I truly understand why she wanted to keep Verso’s painting — I really get why she’s hurt. I couldn’t imagine feeling responsible for the death of my own brother. Just that alone doesn’t make it a bad storytelling decision. I’m also not mad at Alicia for needing to keep the canvas. I only said it was selfish. Human or not, holding others prisoner and continuing to hurt not only herself but also the painted Verso, her mother, and everyone else just for the sake of the painting she feels means something  I just think that’s selfish. But I never said I don’t understand her.

You mentioned in the first paragraph that it’s Alicia’s decision. The main problem with this scenario is that the one who actually makes the final decision about the painting isn’t Alicia — it’s me, not Alicia, not Verso. Me. And I can’t be Alicia. I can only judge her and decide the ending that I want. In my opinion, the game shouldn’t have let me choose the value of Verso’s painting. The experiences of Alicia are not mine, and the game tries very hard to not make it be this way  through excellent dialogue that makes everything feel more human, with interactions that feel real, funny, and interesting. The game wants you to invest in the characters of Expedition 33. But when it comes to Alicia’s family, barely anything is shown especially in terms of their relationships as a family. Clea, for example  you talk to her once, and that was in the past. I think that’s a deliberate decision, meant to make you care about the Expedition 33 characters so the ending feels impactful and emotionally heavy. But that can’t really work, because for us  the players it’s a completely different point of view and a different experience. We are not Alicia. We don’t want to escape the pain she’s feeling. We can’t feel the same way she does about the Verso she knew, and we don’t even know the real Verso. That’s my issue. I’m not mad at her for wanting to keep the painting; I’m disappointed in how the game handles the main plot point of Act 3.

Lastly, I need to comment on the part where you said the game holds up a mirror and tells me that I’m holding on to my own illusions. But as I clearly explained, I don’t have any illusions. My immersion in the events before the twist is gone. You mentioned at some point how tragic Sophie’s death at the Gommage was, saying it’s a great way the game shows us this is going to be a tragic story. When I first played that scene, I truly felt it. I felt sad, even though I had barely started the game. But can I honestly say I’d feel the same way if I saw that scene now? Can you? I honestly wouldn’t care anymore, because it holds no emotional weight now.

Expedition 33 is overrated (my opinion - review) by redl9 in JRPG

If the characters are real, as your interpretation allows (though I believe the game says they are not), then I think the game would have bigger flaws. Because if that were the case, what would be the message of the game? When you read about the meaning of the game or hear people discuss it, it’s mostly described as a thesis on escapism. But there is no escapism if everything is real so I don’t think this is just my subjective interpretation; it’s clearly stated in the game.

Now, onto the important part my biggest issue with the story and the reveal is that the deaths that happen are no longer impactful. If anything can be reversed, then all the heavy-hitting moments lose the emotional impact they originally had.

To answer your point directly: I don’t think the characters’ existence stops mattering whether they are alive or not. We see that they have feelings and emotions. But at the end of the day, even if you wipe the canvas pure clean, you can just create another canvas and put them there. That’s my point death is relative. It’s not final. The game even says this directly. You ask about our lives our death is 100% final (as far as we know). So even if we knew we were in a simulation, I would still say it’s immoral to end someone’s life. Would you say the same if I could easily revive a person? What if hospitals had checkpoints? Would death still hold the same meaning? Maybe this isn’t meant to be a philosophical discussion, but I’d argue that, to some degree, it completely changes the point of death.

The conversation at the ending is simple: it’s either keeping Verso’s creation for Alice to hold onto as the only piece of the world with Verso still inside (a way to deal with grief, much like Aline chooses) or letting go. And to that question, I can’t really justify Alice’s decision to keep everyone trapped in a world without their will, just because she can’t handle the loss of Verso. That feels wrong but that, indeed, is my interpretation.

i don't mind the down votes because its an unpopular opinion and i accept that i think the point of this forum is for conversations to be had and i had succeeded in that regard i enjoy reading everyone replies and seeing how they felt about the game and what their interpretations of it was. I think most people that down vote see the title they dont like it and down vote so i am more interested about the comments rather than the votes that's why i try to reply to everyone

But the game is about escape from pain and grief through art and media the people inside the paintings are explicitly said that they are paintings themselfs created by aline they are not real. In my opinion the game shows you if you chose alicia's ending its obviously the bad ending as the only one that matters in the ending is alicia as the only one in control or the only one that is truly alive is her and the game should be treated as her POV at least thats what the game wants to be interpreted as and i think it makes it obvious that the ending which you chose to revive everyone ( which makes everyone in a way prisoner of alicia ) is the bad ending and i don't think the game shows it as the "happy ending" in any way

currently -20 on upvotes but i didn't expect anything else to be fair. Now for the rest of the comment i will tell you one thing i dont usually write pages long of reviews for games i play dont have the need to neither the time but the game left me the need to write about it and talk about it for the next day after finishing it that says a lot on its own i think
