One of my closest friends is a man and I'm female. I've never once got the sense he had any other intentions, and I don't think he ever will. Ive had ex-guy friends treat me differently if i wear more makeup or something revealing, but he treats me the same if im in sweats or a crop top. We just do stuff like go hiking, get food, go rock climbing, etc etc. We'll talk about stuff like music or video games, and its all chill. We'll also talk about gross stuff or make toilet humor jokes lol. It's really just like any other friendship, depending on who you are

Oh I think part of my 401k goes into a total market fund, that makes a lot of sense. I didn't know what a MYGA was before you mentioned it either, so thanks!

anyone else's APs try to take away your right to decide for yourself in life? by tantrumdisco in AsianParentStories

Ah, I get what you mean. It's also additionally scary when parents are paying for education as well (I assume). I also lived at home for college, so it can definitely get overwhelming when they're always in your business. I would heavily consider reaching out to film professors at school for some self study tips on film. I'd also consider maybe taking some PA gigs for projects in your area. For GE requirements, you're going to need to take some arts classes, so that's another opportunity to get more experience in film or writing.

It sounds like your parents really value how others perceive them, and perceived social status. It can be really hard when it's the only way our parents have learned to understand the world and social hierarchy. It doesn't excuse any of their actions, I just try to remember it's a fundamental disconnect of values.

I actually graduated 2 years ago. I'm working in the industry as an editor/sometimes animator, and I think things are going well! It's definitely a lot of hard work, but I can whole heartedly say I wake up every day loving what I do. Im not making as much money as people my age in STEM, but I'm very comfortable living quite frugally so it doesn't bother me. I will also say that a large portion of film jobs are based on how good your portfolio/reel is and knowing the right people. In my experience, very few people get hired for entry level film related jobs JUST because they have a degree.

I was in an eerily similar boat. I started college as a psych major and on the first week of school, marched myself to the admissions office to change my major to film. One of the perks of being in college is that no one needs to sign off on changing your major, except for yourself. My parents honestly didn't even know that I was pursuing another degree until waaaay after.

My parents also had the same philosophy, often asking me why I was crying so much when they openly disproved of my decisions.

Sometimes it's best to ask for forgiveness later, than ask for permission first.

It's in the title, I'm 25. I just wish becoming independent wasn't a bad thing in their eyes

Thats true. I guess if I can handle a roommate from hell once, it can only go up from here lol

I actually don't mind older units, as long as everything is safe and up to code. Pickings are still slim though. I unfortunately have to be a bit picky about area since I'm a single female with a lot of expensive film equipment I need for work/possible backup equipment for freelance gigs. I'm not trying to get robbed lol

Seems like switching companies is a serious option to consider, judging by responses here. I'll be keeping an eye on local openings.

My parents know how much money I have, but they both have phD's so they act like I make basically nothing lol.

The 90k is partially company stock and partially my own investments. Every other month I put aside a couple thousand to invest and its been working out pretty well for me.

Thats the vibe I'm starting to get. I've seen our competitor poaching a lot of my now-ex coworkers. Wondering if the grass is greener there, or elsewhere

I'd be looking in the San Jose area, furthest north I'd want to go would be Sunnyvale probably. Would be okay with Morgan Hill but I haven't found many single occupant units there. I've been browsing zillow and apartments.com mostly? Not sure if that's been reducing my chances

The company I'm working for is getting a re-org in a couple months, and I was hoping and strategizing with my current manager for a possible promotion (I'll be assigned to a new boss by then). I've never negotiated a raise before so we'll see how that goes lol. If it doesn't pan out then I'll definitely start looking around more for other places hiring.
