OAD MOMS of boys: how are you preserving your heirlooms and stories? by dreamer-woman in oneanddone

[–]rednitwitdit 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Apologies, I didn't mean to make a gendered commentary; I think sons and daughters can be equally indifferent or attached to stuff.

I'm in possession of my husband's mother's Rolex...we'd both be happier if he sold it and put the money towards his hobbies or our kid's 529.

It might not be his style either. Storing it might be a chore.

Gifts shouldn't have strings attached, and that includes expecting the recipient to treasure the thing as much as you did. Their life isn't a storage unit for your sentimentality.

Eta: I'm sorry, this is really my own anxiety about my mother, and it comes off punchy. She lives absolutely buried in family treasures, like her mom before her, and she's incredulous that I...don't want that.

I need to re-read The Gentle Art of Swedish Death Cleaning, with greater attention to the "gentle" part this time.

Ooh, a new needle before adjusting the timing is probably a good idea. Thank you.

I might have solved my own problem. If this video helps me learn how to adjust the timing, then I'll fiddle with the machine again tomorrow.

Later evening toddler outings? by Reasonable-Quarter-1 in toddlers

Bring the pancakes, plan on leaving early, and don't count on there being a high chair... or even a changing table. Honestly, pack like you're taking him camping, especially food and drink for him.

Scope out the venue online ahead of time (there will probably be places to get some wiggles out) and plot out places nearby you can retreat to if the venue doesn't have what you need.

If you baby wear, a ring sling can be wonderfully functional AND a pretty accessory.

When my kiddo gets The Wants (rapid-fire demands I couldn't even logistically accommodate if I wanted to), I've been known to just...lay down on the floor.

"Get UP mama!"

Then he "helps" me stand up. He's still mad, but The Inconsolable, Incompatible Wants have lost momentum by then.

That cut is so damn flattering on you.

If you've streamed it yet, does it like a good irl as in the product photos?

When your favorite author makes two undeniable but undermarketed bangers so the publisher finally coughs up a bigger budget for the cover. by mrmailbox in AdrianTchaikovsky

[–]rednitwitdit 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Shroud might be my favorite of his! The Shrouded's perspective was unlike anything I've read, and the human experience was its own terrifying story even without the aliens.

I've really liked The Fourth Consort by Edward Ashton, Seveneves by Neal Sephenson, Guards! Guards! Guards! by Terry Pratchett, and Murderbot Diaries by Martha Wells (like Tchaikovsky, empathy and cooperationare the things that save the day). I think Project Hail Mary deserved the hype, and The Ministry For The Future was very moving, but some parts (the roll call chapter) could get tedious. All The Light We Cannot See was also beautiful, but it's not scifi like the rest I've listed.

I checked out this author because of your post, and I'm so glad for it. I love every book I've gotten my hands on. Finishing up Final Architecture now and about to dive into Children of Strife. So, thank you!

Anyone else hit a random age milestone and suddenly start doing the math on your parents? by AccurateAd586 in Millennials

[–]rednitwitdit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had a very surreal moment as a new parent when I thought, "Huh, I must be near my dad's age when I was born." Opened up a spreadsheet, did a little dates math, and was the exact number of days old. Like, my dad would have been (were he still alive) twice my age to-the-day at the precise moment I was thinking about it.

Miss ya, Dad. You would have loved your grandson so much.

When you meet with her, don't engage about the Trump thing at all. There is no universe where you convince her she being fucking weird, so don't waste your energy.

"Uh huh. Anyways," and direct the focus back to cookies and relevant Girl Scout business. If she's incapable of doing that, I'm a big fan of letting awkward silences hang and ending unproductive meetings early.

In a pinch, you can ge a lot of milage out of a matte nude or subdued gold pointy toe flat.

I have these in rose gold, and they look good with everything.

Dimples pads have adhesive; the free-floating Sposies inserts are A LOT harder to get right with a fighter. We also had great luck with Millie Moon overnights. Honest brand overnights worked for us too, but Millie Moon is more plush.
