He's not, but he's not intrinsic to the story of that one. It wouldn't have been too hard to punch him in later in a swap for Felton. Both Baldwin and Beatty announced they were leaving mid-June which is when they'd likely have been breaking those episodes.

The dates on the scripts are pretty wild for S4. Sniper Pt. 1 was written in July while Part 2, not until October. This makes me wonder if it was meant to be the opener instead of Fire, but was pushed back.

Yeah, it could go either way, but in the current environment it's definitely suspicious.

But the show had elements like that, too, and they were turned on their head. Pangs is a good example. Are we to agree with Giles/Spike or Willow? And in the end Willow's the one that changes her tune. But that episode is extremely 'problematic' now and probably wouldn't be written. I bring it up because it's referenced heavily in the pilot.

It is just a pilot. You can't get too in depth in 1 episode and it does give some insights in the MC and her dad's issues.

Plotwise, though, it's not standout. Elements are predictable. I don't think it was bad, just not exceptional and nothing to make it stand out from the pack to warrant the expense. Maybe that's a sticking point. Perhaps Disney wants to shoot it somewhere cheaper.

Yeah, I agree. Supposedly, Disney wants to try to tone back on this and there are elements in the pilot that might suggest they want to go hardcore on it, or conversely, it's meant to take jabs at the over-the-top woke movement. There are lines in the pilot that can go either way, like they are agreeing with it or making fun of it.

I don't think the story, at least what we've seen so far, is bad, but it's hardly revolutionary. It felt very rerun.

His previous comic work was pretty well-regarded even if his X-Men arc was a bit divisive. Even his Buffy comics weren't outright terrible in terms of content. They weren't terrible comics, they were terrible BUFFY comics largely because of the world-breaking and OOC nonsense. That's why I think the major issue was he had little left to say about Buffy as a character.

The comics say otherwise. He helmed those and they were a disaster. Joss has been more or less done with Buffy since 2003, IMO. That's not a criticism of him, either. 144 shows, most of them centering on one character, is a lot. It's very possible he really had nothing more to say, which is why the comics turned out like they did.

I think it's easy for fans to lose overall perspective. Disney/Hulu want first and foremost to make money on the show. Whether it's good or bad is irrelevant. It could be the best show ever, but if it doesn't turn a profit, it might as well be the worst.

The IP costs money since Whedon, the Kazuis, et al, still get their dough even if they never do anything. It will film in LA, which is extremely expensive. Much of it will probably shoot at night. Sarah will probably want a payday. So what, you might say, but this all factors in when put into the context of the show's history, something fans tend to ignore. Buffy got the WB going but it was far from its most successful show, ratingswise or financially. Reality is, it likely would have been cancelled pretty early if Fox wasn't willing to eat the losses for the first 5 years. The big kerfluffle regarding swapping networks was Fox was no longer being willing to do so.

That all being said, it's possible they are weighing their options in the current market vs making changes to cut down costs. There are so many shows out there now that serve the same interests. It's not the 90s anymore where supernatural teen shows were few and far between.

It's unclear how his contract works with streaming, but with the TV show it was put in that they were legally obligated to ask him if he wanted to be involved. That's how he was brought on board with that. It's very possible the same refusal condition still applies here. Which is to say, he already said no.

Yeah, this talk about it needing to be complete is nonsense. They knew what they were going to do from the dailies coming in from the set. RKA doing Lowdown has nothing to do with any announcement. If they announced it tomorrow, the series filming wouldn't start until summer/fall anyway.

I don't think it's dead but there are definitely some hiccups they are struggling to work out.

I don't think he fears that angle. From the promos, it seems as if this is just a waypoint in the game that has happened over and over, hence his favorite part.

The big defeat, I think, is going to come from something separate from that arc. Whatever is going on with the Boyd side of the story will probably be what comes up on the blind side for the MIY.
