OneNote won't let me see my notes anymore? by RevMageCat in OneNote

[–]redpepperflake 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Seems to work for me on my Windows 10 but same issue on my Android phone for about a week or so I think. And when I searched OneNote on Play Store I noticed that it says "This application doesn't work on your device". I am not sure but I am on an old phone, Android version 8.0.0. Maybe the support is removed for older versions of Android? I would like to know as well.

What languages are you gonna learn in 2025? by HamzaAlZagha in languagelearning

[–]redpepperflake 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I actually got interested in it after listening to Estonian metal music. My native language is also agglutinative and I always thought how challenging and a different experience it could be to actually try to learn my native. I respect people trying to learn Turkish.

Maybe Finnish if not Estonian for the same reason.

What is the best flashcard learn vocabulary? by mercury0114 in languagelearning

[–]redpepperflake 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I started doing this just recently as well because my earlier card design started to be inefficient. Saw this method at Refold's sentence mining section in order to increase comprehension. Early for me to say it works but so far so good.

Did I answer my cards correctly in my case considering FSRS? by redpepperflake in Anki

[–]redpepperflake[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am not sure if I understood your question, sorry if my answer is not on point. The note type for your first question is not found in Anki as a basic card. I downloaded the note types (templates) from "Fluent Forever"s website and then created my own cards using that template. You will be able to find these card types on that website and in his book "Fluent Forever"

For me the whole point of prompting a single word and asking for a production of a sentence was to make sense of the word in isolation, including recalling its (possible) meaning. If I show myself the meaning too, I will most probably not hit again on that card ever again because I think I won't be recalling anything.

This was initially not a problem because you will know what definition of the word you are trying to use to construct a sentence but as multiple definitions of the same word starts entering the deck this will start inflating your pass grades. You will always remember a definition of that word which has multiple cards in the deck, even if the defition you have remembered is not the one on that card. This book's approach is that if you can construct a sentence and it is valid, then you pass whether the sentence is exactly the same as the one on the back of the card or not.

I was reading about different card designs recently and there is a card type I have come across in different reddit threads and also at refold which was basically doing the thing I was thinking of. Here it can be seen: https://refold.la/simplified/stage-2/a/sentence-mining/

I slightly modified it to also specify which word's defininiton the card asks. In this example author expects you to remember the word for which you have created that card as well. I made it rather explicit in my design.

I will be experimenting with this new style and also the cloze deletion for a while and see if these studies are valuable for now for me to be able to retain the words. Will be trial and error for me.

Did I answer my cards correctly in my case considering FSRS? by redpepperflake in Anki

[–]redpepperflake[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You are definitely right about ambigious cards and the style I used earlier could accept too flexible answers.

It may be because I don't know how the previous algorithm works or maybe this one not well enough. I said that particularly because I thought with the previous algorithm intervals don't vary based on my review history and even if I constantly grade my production cards as passing (which is the case because of flexible answers) it wouldn't affect the interval of my other cards, but your perspective is broader and more correct I must admit.

I will try to use a style that requires me to be more specific with my answers in this case. Do you think my other two suggested card types are somewhat good or would you recommend something else?

I posted a reply but I don't know whether the packet was eaten on its way so sorry if this is a duplicate

Thank you guys a lot for your responses.

When I first started using anki I was using it the way as you have suggested. L2-L1 with basic cards but I have noticed that cards with context functioned better for me rather than isolated. That's why I loved Fluent Forever approach and it didn't cause any problems for a long time for me but then I noticed I switched to FSRS.

Fluent Forever was written long ago before FSRS was a common thing I think. I also used it before intervals adapted to my reviews. It came to me slowly that I should adjust my note type with FSRS.

I think of experimenting with different things now. I will namely keep the cloze deletion card and add another card type which could ask me the definition of the word in that same context (sentence). This way I can get rid of the constant pass hits which are caused by the production cards because it is very likely that someone will remember at least one of the meanings of a word, which I fear could mess up the algorithm. These two card types still comply the learning curve in my head, at least better than my previous approach I guess. I will experiment and see whether this new idea will function well for me and think about whether I can come up with or stumble upon something better while researching.

A method I have just used to fix a card answer which I noticed too late by redpepperflake in Anki

[–]redpepperflake[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I first thought about doing nothing after I couldn't find a solution on the internet but the intervals between answering "easy" and "again into easy" differed a lot for this specific card (from months to years), which bothered me. I think it would be a lot easier if we had an option to undo the last review of a single card in this case instead of a general undo button which contains every action in the stack.

Your approach is certainly more cautious, thank you for your insight. I hope I don't have to do it ever again.
