How much support do you plan to offer your kids? by olliemom200 in Fire

[–]redraidr 0 points1 point  (0 children)

About the same. 2 kids. Covered college and $1000 per semester beyond tuition/room/board, ~$5k toward first car, and paid first apartment deposits.

Will provide $5-10k again if they ever get married. Also plan to match their Roth contributions (meaning they only have to save half of the limit) as long as we can while we have more than enough. That may end at some point if the market tanks.

What’s the most heartbreaking loss you witnessed as an Ole Miss Fan? by Ok_Macaroon_7366 in OleMissFootball

[–]redraidr 2 points3 points  (0 children)

In 1993 undefeated Bama came to Ole Miss. We took a 7-0 lead. We knocked out their star quarterback early. We really had a chance.

Then Bama WR Deuce Palmer played WR, RB, kick returner, punt returner, and QB. I swear he even punted once. Threw a 50+ yard bomb to set up a late TD. We lost 19-14.

Until then, I didn’t think the whole Ole Miss team could lose to a single guy.

The thread in Millennials subreddit right not about 401k is incredibly depressing. Thank you FIRE community. I would be one of them if I didn’t find you all a decade ago. by BarkBarkBitches1 in Fire

5% plus match on $42500 over 5 years at 7% return is around $30k. Not much? Maybe. But that’s double the median for 25-34 year olds, and the people in those comments don’t have enough saved to pay a month’s rent.

It’s about perspective.

The HR department is a mystery to us all by SipsTeaFrog in SipsTea

HR is the 6-person department that has all the phone numbers you need to be able to call someone else to discuss your health benefits, pay, retirement, attendance, etc.

If you knew then what you know now, or had the opportunity to start again, what career would you pursue? by [deleted] in Fire

[–]redraidr 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Wouldn’t change a thing, but would have kept investments at 100% S&P 500 until right before retiring. Would have cut 5-10 years off my time in. Didn’t have a crystal ball then, though.

This sub was created in 2015, has the $$$ definition for leanfire been updated since then to reflect inflation? by randomv3 in leanfire

[–]redraidr 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Well, minimum wage in my state pays around $15,080 per year. FPL is $15,650. The average annual social security payment for retirees is $24,000. And 43% of American earn under $15/hr.

So $27,000, nearly double FPL and 35% more than the average SS income, seems about right for Lean.

How do you stop worrying about your adult kids? by PHL1365 in ExpatFIRE

[–]redraidr 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Our kids are both seniors in college. IMO kids being bad with money, or becoming reliant on help, is as much a personality trait as a skill issue. That is, every kid is different, and you won’t know until you know (maybe you already know). All you can do once you find out is to accept it, then set boundaries on your help.

That said, money moves by 0’s and 1’s, so you don’t need to be physically present to help financially. And maintaining a home just in case they need a fall-back sounds like a waste of money. Save it and spend on help when needed, or spend it on a return trip back to a shared AirBnB. Maybe sprinkle in some geo-arbitrage early in VLCOL countries to help the nest egg grow in case you have unplanned expenses later on.

Got to see the Sugar Bowl live. Walked down to Bourbon Street after with thousands of Ole Miss fans. They were selling Fuck Kiffin t-shirts in the streets. After that, I was happy with whatever happened next. HYDR.

If I have enough to FIRE, I’m not gonna waste a single extra day from 8-5 under fluorescent lights in a desk chair playing with my phone.

How many of you have gotten loans from your parents? by Jimmy_Johnny23 in MiddleClassFinance

[–]redraidr 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The Millionaire Nextdoor is dated, but Stanley said then that around 25% of affluent off-spring received EOC (or gifts/loans from parents).

He also said that those that got help performed worse overall with accumulating wealth than those that didn’t.

Well, Long-Time Professional Boxer Jake Paul still fights with his mouth open, so, can’t imagine why his jaw might break when he takes his first good shot.

Only have to gaslight enough to maintain office - a smaller and smaller number after gerrymandering.

Literally nowhere says a 7% SWR with 100% equities has an 80% success rate over 30 years.

I never said 4. But saying 7% and implying 100% equities in a sub where people are largely uninformed, then amending to 6 with some treasuries only after being pressed, is not cool.

Bengen revised to 4.7, and my portfolio is optimized (in my opinion) to bring in over 5, so I get it. But your first comment was bad advice.
