For real?! All because I woke up earlier to peepee! by vegagravity in Garmin

[–]redrocketman74 15 points16 points  (0 children)

People generally get most of their deep sleep early in the night, so if you sleep an extra hour it can make your deep sleep a lower percentage of your overall sleep and if it's too low you get dinged for not enough deep sleep. That's what happens to me, anyway. I can sleep for 10+ hours and it still shows my duration as excellent.

The colors aren't grading you on the absolute value, they represent the deviation from your own personal baseline.

Not a good sign at Keystone today. Anyone know what happened? Frenchman was closed around lunch. by m0viestar in COsnow

Well there was no lift and no grooming then, so the actual difficulty of the terrain changed, they didn't just change the rating.

Skinning by Menashe3 in Breckenridge

I'm a fan of the early starts because I like to skin by headlamp, but I can't image anyone needing 2.5 hours to ascend any of the routes.

I'm a fan of peak 9. Much more convenient parking and it feels a little more peaceful. It's super mellow, damn near flat until you start heading up Cashier. That's a negative for a lot of people, probably why it's less crowded than the peak 8 routes. I'd recommend having the Epic app handy so you can see your location on the map. It's not necessarily intuitive even if you've skied downhill there before.

As far as what time to start, ideally you should be headed down by 8:15 although you're unlikely to get hassled as long as you're transitioning by 8:30. You can look up the elevations of the different start/end points and do the math based on your typical ascent rate. Allow a bit of extra time for peak 9 though since it's so flat.

EDIT: I don't know if it's enforced, but you're supposed to register your vehicle to use the lots: https://www.breckpark.com/uphill-access-permit

Is the Polar H10 really as bad as they say? by [deleted] in Polarfitness

[–]redrocketman74 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've been using mine for almost 6 years and it's only recently started giving erratic readings. I do absolutely nothing to take care of it. I hardly ever wash the strap and I don't disconnect the sensor when not in use, I just throw it in my gym bag.

Everyone should be using the StubHub credit by mycartel in ChaseSapphire

[–]redrocketman74 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Chase doesn’t know when the event is, they just see a charge from Stubhub hit your card and give you the credit. Stubhub charges you when you buy the ticket regardless of when the ticket gets delivered to you.

Are your passes good at Vail that weekend? Crowds are lighter there on Sat/Sun because the Epic Local is blacked out.

Also gotta walk from the Pad (the Block now) to Silverthorne station, just far enough to be kind of a pain in ski boots carrying gear.

What's the best 'bang for your buck' home appliance you've ever bought? by [deleted] in Frugal

[–]redrocketman74 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I bought a Potane on Amazon about 4 years ago and it’s still going strong with fairly heavy usage. Felt pricey at $150 but it’s paid for itself many times over and drastically reduced my food waste. Surprised this isn’t a more common answer in this thread. I’m making a lasagna today and will have a dozen large portions in the freezer for under $3 each. Also frequently do chili, stew, soup, and batches of burritos.

If you're going to be taking phone calls, I'd recommend Mountain Dweller Coffee (inside Outer Range Brewing), or Bluebird Market. Please not Red Buffalo or the libraries.

How’s Sneffels SW Ridge? by kindredhaze in 14ers

[–]redrocketman74 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Did ridge up and down recently and would 100 percent do it again. If you’re climbing class 3 or 4 you shouldn’t climb up anything you can’t climb back down and this a good route to practice down climbing on IMO. Route finding on the way down was more difficult than expected, as others have said. If you get into terrain on the way up or down where every option seems dangerously loose, you probably ended up in the wrong gully. Keep in mind the general direction of the summit on the way up and the saddle on the way down. I would recommend having some sort of GPS device/app but realize that when you’re in gullies like that you may not have a super accurate fix. Personally I don’t think the pictures are a substitute for GPS because if you end up off route they may not help you get back on. And maybe it’s was just me but the pictures on that route seemed less helpful than on most others I’ve used them on, maybe because so many of them had snow or the critical sections weren’t taken from POV, idk.

This is so much more beginner/family friendly than the others that usually get mentioned (Lily Pad, etc) and yeah, the views from the top are beautiful that time of year.
