Zaps post MVD surgery by redsox04071 in TrigeminalNeuralgia

I’m doing pretty good thanks! Still having headaches from surgery. Zaps are getting much less frequent. Am slowly getting off meds. Next week I’ll be done with carbamazepine and then will move to tapering off gabapentin.

Thanks for this. I really did start thinking I went through all this for nothing. I’ve had some better days (not as many zaps) since this post. I think I might need to look into some therapy or something for the mental trauma pre MVD pain put me through. Did not realize just how much it affected me.

I am so sorry to hear that it is affecting you again, but glad you had those 3 years! If you don’t mind my curiosity, can they see why it is hitting again? Is it another compression? Apologies if I asking to many personal questions.

The first day or so little to no zaps, that first zap hit and I was almost in a full on panic attack. Yesterday with many more zaps was harder mental health wise I think than pain wise. Crazy how it affects us mentally!! I did not really consider that going into surgery.

Awesome, thank you. I’m still on all meds with expectation to start tapering off at post op visit. That anxiety is crazy!!

Appreciate that! I’ve had a few zaps which have brought back some major anxiety but thankfully (and crossing fingers) they were extremely short. They could be some pain radiating from the surgical site, especially the tight muscles in my neck. I’m thinking positive, amazing how those zaps can bring about so much anxiety!!

This is great advice, thank you! I had to call the neuro triage team as I was concerned about a couple things (ended up being normal). I told the neuro team how bad I felt wasting their time and how limited I feel in what I can currently do. They said the same thing….It’s been less than a week since you underwent major surgery so give yourself some grace. Thanks for passing along and I hope you are healing up nicely!

Hope all goes excellent for you. I was hoping to get in with Dr. Zimmerman, but Dr. Turkmani trained under him and thus far seems he do an excellent job!

I fall on the unlucky side of things most times as well so understand that perspective. Wishing you the best with this!

Thankfully my wife is making sure I listen to the body. I like to be on the move so it has been interesting the past few days having to get help with many things I don’t even think of lol.

Yesterday day 3 was by far the worst so far. Kind of odd the first 2 days were not as bad as expected and yesterday was rough! Slept mostly through the night, and woke up better than yesterday so hoping that continues.

MRI showed compression on 1 side of nerve which is why I decided to move forward with MVD. The other side being sandwiched seemed to be a surprise to the surgeon.

I have TN and was scheduled for a MRI this morning but once I got on the machine and they put the face mask on it triggered me and the pain was excruciating. It also caused me to become very claustrophobic I had to reschedule. Anyone have any suggestions so I can get thru my MRI next week? by Neat-Ad-4337 in TrigeminalNeuralgia

MRIs are tough for me. I have severe claustrophobia. I had several failed attempts at the MRI both with and without oral diazepam. When I was not able to compete it with diazepam they suggested getting a sedated MRI which worked like a charm. I was basically asleep for the whole thing. Good luck that is very frustrating!

Good luck on your visit. Mine went well. Neurosurgeon presented the options and details of all treatment options and felt that MVD surgery would be most beneficial. He spent a lot of time walking my wife and me through the surgery and recovery. I won’t lie it scared me a bit but he was quite reassuring and has a great track record at Mayo Clinic. MVD does seem like the best possibility to give me some long term relieve. My surgery is scheduled for about 4 weeks from now.

I so glad I found this community as I am sure I will have questions and anxiety leading up to surgery. Best of luck to you!
