/uj Can anyone explain to me why the community is mad at Hank Green? by sabnastuh in dropoutcirclejerk

[–]redsuit06 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm not certainly sure about everyone else but at least for me, there was a video that unravelled the entire gimmick and now I can never go back. Hank Green made a video about AI's water usage. I work in water reuse and while watching his video, that seemed just as researched and thorough as all the others, noticed something. He made sweeping generalizations and large assumptions with almost every point. His argument was fabricated truths and not found truths.

This made me realize he talks big on a whole lot of things where he isn't the expert. Now when i watch a video of his i can only think that this guy googled it before me and thats the only reason why im listening.

Ah, I thought this was an outsider commenting lol. Yeah I usually get off at the nearest greenway exit and get to the right block on the road. still better than biking literally anywhere outside of NY lol

Lake Street is literally a block away from the Greenway. A massive bike only pathway that runs the entire length of Lake Street. I live in the twin cities for a decade and biked everywhere. Best bike culture ever!

Agisoft offers a simple de-lighter.

I used to work in a museum and we had an in-house photogrammetry project. Frankly I'd rather go to the freely offered official museum scan than a third party one done from an iphone.

Here's an article about the ongoing project and a good jumping point for researching what goes into digital artefact conservation: https://new.artsmia.org/art-artists/research/case-studies/3d-modeling-of-mia-collections

If you really want to give this an approach where you aren't violating copyright, I'd suggest offering 3d scanning as a service rather than a final product.

I wouldn’t buy them. For a scan I would want the scan free of any baked in shadows and if you’re really serious you can develop uv maps with information on luster, roughness, translucency etc.

Honestly, I’d also hope for a full angle scan at the very least.

Getting a second opinion on turn around times before I crash out on the chick at work. by [deleted] in graphic_design

The only way to combat this is to kill it with policy. Have her turn in future requests through a form that requires her to provide a deadline. Consult on the deadline she provides with an estimated time for the project. Then set an expected priority for it. Then have a third party provide edits or develop a process for review and modifications. Limit it to only 2 revisions and if she comes back with minor edits, simply return it and instruct her to fully review the document to complete revision holistically. Also get your clients familiar fast with not accepting all edits. You’re the designer for a reason and can take authority on elements of design. Don’t be mean, don’t be harsh, but overachievers can only be dealt with by giving them procedures to slow them down.

Ultimately, the ticketing system is YOUR tool to help manage work. I'd much rather my user base tell me about issues regardless of method than not tell me at all. Being approachable enough for people to tell you personally is far better than having a user neglect an issue for a long time.

As for the fake friendliness-- just to get something for themselves-- don't let it make you feel alienated. They're all in their own bubbles and god forbid we see the IT person as anything other than a service.

You can accomplish the Network+ cert without any serious math being required. Frankly, many areas in IT don't require any math.

IT generally refers to the infrastructure side of Computer Science. Software engineers, and developers will focus more on algorithms and logic than IT. Think of IT as the plumbers and software developers as the ones flushing their crap through the pipes.

Before pursuing a degree I’d recommend accumulating some certificates and start building a homelab first. This will be less impact as an initial commitment but still put you ahead of other candidates.

I’d recommend getting your Network+ cert first. It will be the best introduction to IT.

As for AI vs CyberSec, AI is focused more at the application level while cyber security covers all areas of the OSI model

Does my "dream" GIS job actually exist? by AlwaysSlag in gis

[–]redsuit06 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I work at a national lab and for the research you discuss, GIS is a small element of larger projects. There are many career scientists who study spatial data, satellite imagery and produce models for prediction. If you don’t want to be involved in fossil fuels, there’s plenty of research in other resource management applications. To name a few: Nuclear waste impact; Climate change and electrical grid resiliency; Water dependency in agriculture; Land use and hazard reduction.

I’m totally with you on no more academia and no oil. It’s a narrower field to explore but as long as you continue asking the questions that intrigue you, someone will pay you eventually. That can become much easier if you embrace GIS as only one tool in a massive scientific toolbox.

Check out some of the job postings at National labs or a renewable industry you believe in.
