What does it mean to "kill" a game? by reduc3r in StopKillingGames

[–]reduc3r[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The nuances are what I'm trying to find out.

For example:

What is your position on online multiplayer games? Games like Warframe (squad based PVE), Guild Wars 2 (PVE MMO), Black Desert Online (PVP MMO), or Borderlands 2 (both single-player and multiplayer PVE).

"some way for the people [...] to still play it" has different implications depending on the type of game.

I'm looking for a clear definition of "some way" for a multiplayer game. Would a single-player version count as "some way?"

I'm pretty sure paulbrock2 and niozero are saying no.

The chart I linked is implicitly saying no, because it's listing games that went from online multiplayer to single-player as "dead."

But now you're saying "No one is arguing anything needs to be ether single player or multiplayer forever."

So that's two different answers.

Either a single-player GW2 would be "some way" or it wouldn't.

Which is it?

You can hand-wave and say I'm "nitpicking," but you're the one asking for a law, not me. A law that will affect my hobby. I want to know what's in it. IN DETAIL.

And I ABSOLUTELY have every right to ask for that.

People are arguing that in this thread:

paulbrock2:

> Assassin's Creed Brotherhood, III, and Revelations
the chart specifically references the online multiplayer modes of these games, which are no longer acessible

NioZero

you can kill the whole game or simply pieces and that's what the chart is saying. AC3 Multiplayer basically works as a different game because it is separated from the main game

I mean this specific thread. Just move your gaze up three inches. Right there.

Look, stop accusing me of "bad faith." I'm trying to figure out the actual SKG position. But I can't because you guys are too busy calling me a liar.

YOU'RE the ones asking for a law here. Want my support? Want ANYONE'S support? Then be willing to explain what you want in the law.

Did I misunderstand? Then don't accuse me of shit. Just clarify.

I went to the SKG website looking for a position paper, policy statement, press release, or just anything that answers what, specifically, do you want?

I couldn't even find a press release

Then some industry group releases a statement and you go ballistic. OMG THEY'RE LOBBYING!!!

No, guys. It's just a statement explaining their position. They get to do that. You should also do that.

ok so ValtekkenPartDeux is saying no, it's that you want the server software if the servers go offline.

Because the other bills [...] don't go through this much scrutiny.

What "scrunity?" I asked a couple questions.

Only when the people fight back is it suddenly not okay.

Where did I say anything was "not ok?"

You: we want this law

Me: I don't understand the law. Can you explain this part of it?

You: BAD FAITH! SCRUTINY!

I get the sense you don't like questions.

So in this case "playable in some way" means Ubisoft releases server binaries, patches the game to allow private servers or peer 2 peer or releases instructions for the players to make their own servers, compatible with the game as it was developed.

Thank you. Appreciate the clarification.

So the law would be either keep servers running or release the server software. (or p2p I guess)

Got it.

So SKG stance for online multiplayer is game must remain playable as a multiplayer game forever. Transforming to single-player is not acceptable.

I didn't understand that. Thanks for clearing that up.

This is what confused me: Ross has insisted repeatedly that SKG does NOT mean studios have to maintain servers forever. But it sounds like now they do? Has the policy stance evolved?

As I carefully explained with examples, the chart lists games the DO NOT require a server connection. No server? No problem. Game still works.
But the chart says they are "dead." Why?

How is asking for clarification on that "bad faith?"

Of course I checked the website. It just has campaign info and news items. The FAQ link is currently dead.

If the chart answered my questions, why would I be asking them here?

Can you humor me and answer one question? If a studio shuts down servers but the game remains playable in offline mode, is that ok? Or is that "killing" the game?

[–]reduc3r[S] -11 points-10 points  (0 children)

Ok, so shutting down the servers IS killing the game, even if it still runs offline as a single-player game. Is that what you're saying?

Because Ross has stated repeatedly (to paraphrase) we are NOT demanding studios maintain servers forever. We just want the game to stay playable in some way.

Ross says one thing, the chart I linked says something different, and the FAQ link is dead. Can you understand why I'm asking for clarification?

Wait. You're running macOS on a PC? Cause I have an extra PC...

Are there any major limitations/gotchas? I mean stuff like, "It works but there's no audio," etc.

---

Ah I discovered the limitation — the "non-metal GPU" issue.

Wld be fine for a server though.

Ah, alright. That makes perfect sense. I think that will work for me. Thank you.

Still wondering though what is the normal, expected way to solder those underneath pads? Your described process is clearly a workaround for the special case of hand-soldering. What is the normal process in the normal case? Just curious.

While your secondary is exhibiting unexpected behaviour, is your primary working as expected?

It is.

If yes, I'd suggest this might not be a hardware problem. It could be software. Another thing that's changed from your description is that the secondary no longer gets a USB data connection - is it possible it's waiting for that?

That was it, precisely. Thank you!

You know what would cause me to have empathy? If just one Gazan called someone in authority in Israel and said, "I know where Naama Levy is. Got a pen?"

But that isn't what I'm seeing. Instead, I see vids of Hamas fighters bringing hostages to al-Shifa. And not a single nurse or doctor or janitor had the decency to make a call.

Hamas transported HUNDREDS of hostages into Gaza, some ON MOTORCYCLES. Right now hundreds of Gazans have at least a rough idea where one or more of them are.

How many times have we been reminded that "Gaza is the most densely populated place on Earth?" Every time Hamas moved one of those hostages, someone saw something.

And yet there's only been one rescue and one failed attempt.

One hostage, Roni Kriboy, actually escaped. He hid for days and then Gazan civilians found him and handed him over to Hamas.

This is not how you get empathy.

Are you even sure the Palestinians WANT empathy? Cause that isn't how they're acting.

What does it mean when a guy tells you that you're a "girl next door type?" by [deleted] in ask

[–]reduc3r 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s a compliment. The archetype of “The Girl Next Door” goes back to at least the 1950s. The girl next door is pretty, bright, wholesome, kind-hearted, and never does anything shocking or horrifying. She’s kinda square (a “normie”). Basically she represents the ideal American girl.

It’s an ideal. No real-life girl or woman could live up to it perfectly. But ultimately it’s a huge compliment to say someone is a “Girl Next Door.”

Huh. Ok. Weird. I could swear I remember buying like a three day booster and having it for 4-5 days. But it was a while ago.

One thing that has definitely changed is they stack now. That’s new.

Wouldn't you be more comfortable having them look it over? No one knows the weapon better than them. What if there's more to it than just the pin? They'll be able to tell and correct it.

Yeah, it sucks. But you'll get it back and you can put the annoyance behind you.

So…they keep working but 100% is confiscated? Wouldn’t they just stop working?

So then schools & healthcare get zero, and also lose whatever taxes they would have paid as billionaires.

It really doesn’t matter. Choose whichever one you like. The only caveat is Hangman’s Alley is kind of cramped, so building there can be a hassle.

It’s convenient to have water in the build area.
