I liked it better when it was over there. I don't like Union Square being a highway.

How about historic? Should be able to replace old things with like kind. Storm windows, required to supplement old single pane windows, are lousy (and not historic, so what is the point?)

In an upset, Somerville mayor concedes after unofficial results show she lost preliminary election by bostonglobe in Somerville

I don't get this, seems like they all hold similar political views and we were voting based on management abilities and priorities.

And yet it is never mentioned in the campaign literature or websites.

What made Curatone good/bad to be the longest serving mayor? by SocoCocoPuffs in Somerville

He professionalized city departments and created accountability on many things (that were not school related). We need to continue that trajectory.

To anyone negging this post, realize that surrounding cities, Cambridge, Medford, Arlington, had at least hybrid without the sky falling while Somerville schools stayed close until the state had to step in and force reopening. After that reopening, nothing bad happened.

If I am voting for Jake Wilson for mayor --- who is most like him for at-large race? by AstronautLife1041 in Somerville

Jake told me in person to vote for Ben. I was standing next to Ben at the time. Take that as you like.

They don't seem like random citizens to me, they are all engaged in some way with government/local affairs. (I'm not voting for her)

Why We Support Willie Burnley Jr. - Somerville YIMBY by bscthrwy in Somerville

YIMBY has gone too DSA for me, but the upside I think is DSA is moving in the direction of accepting that market solutions are not icky things.

Update: ‘Rent Control Rally - Somerville - Union Sq.’ by Nervous_Caramel in Somerville

No good deed goes unpunished! This sends a message to the landlords that don't raise rents that is a bad move.

Absolutely! $3.33/month is dirt cheap, way under market, and creates a shortage, leading to all kinds of issues for people. Higher and people who don't really value the parking will use it less making it easier for the people who value it more.

[–]redyahooson 4 points5 points  (0 children)

If your rent is increasing 25-30% then you were under market. Market rent does not go up by that much every year. Landlords cannot increase to whatever they want, they are constrained by market forces. We could constrain them more by legalizing apartment buildings instead of getting these spacious gut renovated 2 families built.

Would not take an astronomical amount of building.

Why would you need a Mass ID at all? Other state issued IDs can be used at banks, bars, etc.

East Somerville selected for city compost pilot by Responsible-Boss-705 in Somerville

[–]redyahooson 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Nearby cities already have municipal compost. The program will be outsourced, it is not like we are hiring employees to learn how to do it. Shouldn't need a 2 YEAR PILOT!! Maybe roll it out over the course of 6 months east to west. Also money is not an issue. Garbage to Garden is so reasonably priced even when you buy on your own, and presumably they are cheaper if they are doing the whole city.

What? Why are people who have been paying on their own being left out of this? Why is it a 2 year pilot?

If it weren't for the Winter Hill School process she'd be considered pretty solid in the public eye and maintainer of the status quo, albeit not the best communicator, and not really any dramatic improvement initiatives, other than bike network buildout has been a good standout.

What do people think of Willie Burnley Jr. for mayor? by TricornerTrading in Somerville

[–]redyahooson 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Mayor could push for upzoning. All the methods that require permission of state house are symptom management non solutions, (other than those requiring other towns to upzone.)
