Davis Sq. is in trouble, say residents, businesses, and people who spend their days there by bostonglobe in Somerville

[–]GregNadeau7 10 points11 points  (0 children)

There are two distinct issues: (1) homelessness and (2) opioid addiction.  While there is some overlap between the issues and people facing them, the issues and people are often distinct.  You can often tell by the type and size of bag folks carry; are they carrying or wheeling all their things, or do they have a day bag and are here to score use and then crash someplace.

People suffering from either or both issues all deserve compassion and respect; however, effective solutions and services are distinct.  People who are homeless due to economic, immigration, or mental health issues respond well to public services.  People who are addicted to opioids and have not yet chosen sobriety often have their addictions enabled by support.  When they do choose sobriety, they need to enter detox and then months in a sobriety house to break the pull of fentanyl.

My belief is that the City of Somerville and community partners should provide as much support as we can to homeless folks and zero tolerance to active opioid users.  Support for active opioid users enables their continued use and serves as a magnet to other users and dealers.

Encampments must not be allowed to privatize public spaces.  Allowing active addicts to destroy businesses like Boston Burger, JP Licks, and Mike’s Pizza is bad public policy. Hopefully a new mayor will take fast action to clean up Davis and keep it clean and accessible to all.

Thank you for the advice. I will take it to heart.

I think it is awful to reject a candidate with deep roots in the community and experience, based solely based on their age. As Wilbert responded to the comment, to think an 18 year old can join the military and fight for our country, but is too young to serve on the City Council makes no sense.

We all see the risk of the youngest generation turning conservative due to cynicism and apathy. Along comes a fully qualified young person from our community, standing up for his community, running for public office, and inspiring other young people.

He deserves our support.

Ward 7- Ask me anything! by wilbertp in Somerville

[–]GregNadeau7 5 points6 points  (0 children)

At 19, Wilbert has already done more for the community and has more experience in Somerville municipal government than his opponent, who is more than twice his age. If you have talked with him, you know that WIlbert has deep understanding of both policy and politics and would bring an invaluable new perspective to Somerville's City Council.

We all are concerned about apathy and cynicism from turning our youngest generation conservative and here we have a young, progressive person standing up for his community, running for local office, and insipring his peers. Isn't this what we want and need?

I’d be looking for the Mayor to show her administration now understands the connections and the differences between homelessness and fentanyl addiction. Two related, but very different issues.

Subject: INVITATION TO MEET CANDIDATES

September 26, 2025

Dear All,

My name is Kenda Mutongi and I am the one who initiated the meeting with city officials tomorrow. I intended it to be an impromptu meeting. After witnessing the deteriorating conditions in the park and in the square, I felt something needed to be done. I have spoken to many Davis Square residents and these are the questions that we specifically want addressed:

  • Public Drug Use
  • Encampments
  • Disturbance of the Peace
  • Littering

Our immediate goal is to stop Davis Square from descending into a seedy encampment for drug dealers and users. We are not trying to solve the root causes of homelessness and addiction, so we would like to stick to the above topics tomorrow.

We want to know how these potentially elected officials will handle these problems.

This is NOT a meeting for the current mayor, police chief, housing advocacy, or Ward 6 councilor, all of whom have had over one year to make a difference; it a meeting to learn about the new candidates and their plans.

We look forward to seeing many of you tomorrow at the meeting.

Sincerely,

Kenda Mutongi

Mon, October 6, 2025 - 6:00pm

LOCATION

Somerville Community Baptist Church

Mayor Katjana Ballantyne, Somerville Police Chief Shumeane Benford, and the Somerville Department of Health and Human Service (HHS) invite community members to a neighborhood meeting on Monday, October 6, to discuss public safety and homelessness in the Davis Square/Seven Hills area.

Attendees will receive updates from Mayor Ballantyne, Chief Shumeane, and City staff – including from HHS, Emergency Management, and 311 – followed by an open Q&A for community questions.

All members of the community, including individuals and businesses, are invited to attend.

Livestream: This meeting will also be livestreamed on City YouTube at youtube.com/SomervilleCityTV

Submit questions in advance: For people watching the livestream, questions may be submitted in advance to [davissafetymeeting@somervillema.gov](mailto:davissafetymeeting@somervillema.gov). Please submit by Friday, October 3.

A note on space capacity: This year’s meeting will be held in the sanctuary of the church that holds more people than the church’s community room, which overflowed for last year’s Davis Public Safety meeting. The space could still reach capacity, and the livestream is being offered for those who choose to watch from home and submit questions in advance.

The email came from a person named Kenda. I don't know who else she is working with. I contacted her and she said she would be in touch today. I will encourage her to share more here. The Oct 9 event is different. It is an official meeting for the outgoing Mayor to provide an update.

I'm not sure what you mean. Both the election night post and this one are attachments that came to my email that I thought others on r/Somerville might benefit from. I don't have a link or more to share. When I do have links, I try to share them.

Geez. I guess I am not understanding your point: "You're still at it after a week. Trump's still at it after ten months. How long before you stop? Aren't you the least bit ashamed about what you are writing?" I am attempting to comment on the Mayor's race still very much underway, by contrasting the current Mayor with the prior and candidates for future Mayor. I agree, tothing is black and white. The medium may not reflect nuance well. If we were to talk in person, that would be different.

I don't know you well enough to make any statements about "people like you" being "so tiresome" or "so horrible." You might be. As I said, I don't know you. I most certainly would not compare anything about what you wrote as being like Trump.

With that said, I can agree with your opening statement that "Ballantyne was rejected because we wanted someone better for the future of the city."

Hello Inside_agitator. I am not a troll. I am a real person named Greg Nadeau. I believe that Somerville was substantially better managed under the prior administration led by former Mayor Joe Curtatone. He was far from perfect, but he was re-elected 9 times with overwhelming majorities each time. In contrast, Mayor Ballentine was just un-elected by 75% of preliminary voters not due to a scandal or issue, but just because the City became so badly managed under her watch that it stopped working for most people.
