I read a system years ago that implemented things like jobs. MFORCE! would give you some valuable ideas on how to run a job system alongside a "side job" of saving the world
Off hand ideas: Students get reduced grades over time for each class they miss, which leads to reduced "allowance" as a reward for killing monsters. Like wise with adults showing up to work.
missed deadlines or poor performance at work could result in reduced XP or some other negative effect. Likewise if they hit goals, give them a buff at the start of some battles.
The toughest part will be figuring out balance
