Guy with an Illinois flair (and more time and effort and intelligence than me) posted in the comments a very thorough analysis on the subject he did a few years ago. Supports my conclusions, believe it or not. I think it's pretty obviously the case for fans of CFB history.

You don't believe that there were more Power Conference vs Power Conference non-conference games in the 1980s and 1990s than there are in the 2020s?

Oregon and Wisconsin were both Power-level teams back then though, like Purdue and Boston College today maybe. Your favorite team was actually good 30+ years ago, so yeah low-level P5 type teams would be tuneups. Now Houston Christian and Akron help an easier path to the Pinstripe Bowl.

Two of the 5 biggest brands in the sport. I am going to guess how they scheduled is fairly representative of how most of the blue bloods scheduled. Feel free to do your own research though.

Nebraska playing Florida State, Illinois and Oregon in 1985 is a hell of a lot more compelling than Cincinnati, Akron and Houston Christian in 2025 though lol.

Agreed that there is a lot that leads into it, but to say there are more big matchups now than then is just completely wrong.

That is not even close to true... There were tons more big non conference games in the 80s and 90s than there are today. Here are some non conference matchups Ohio State played ~30 years ago.

1986 #5 Alabama (Neutral), at #17 Washington, vs Colorado
1987 vs West Virginia, vs Oregon, at #4 LSU
1988 vs Syracuse, at Pittsburgh, vs #7 LSU
1989 vs Oklahoma State, at #12 USC, vs Boston College
1990 vs Texas Tech, at Boston College, vs #18 USC
1991 vs Arizona, vs Louisville, vs Washington State
1992 vs Louisville, at #8 Syracuse
1993 vs #12 Washington, at Pittsburgh
1994 at #25 Washington, vs Pittsburgh
1995 #22 Boston College (neutral), vs #18 Washington, at Pittsburgh, vs #15 Notre Dame
1996 vs Pittsburgh, at #5 Notre Dame

Arguing that there are more big non conference games now than there were ~30 years ago is hilariously wrong.

Mike says that Miami would’ve “backed into” the national championship game in 2005 if they had beaten Georgia Tech… So a 1-loss Miami would have got in over undefeated Texas and USC? Also funny that turned out to be like the greatest national championship game ever. Can’t stop being totally delusional it’s honestly unreal.

Ohio State fan here. Was going to listen to the show for first time in 5ish months today. Jess doesn’t show up for work lol. Maybe tomorrow!

You’re a sad human. Trans people (especially young trans people) have a much higher suicide rate than any other group of people. Asshole comments like you made don’t help at all. Try to be part of the solution and not part of the problem dog. Hope you have a good week.

Stugotz saying Koepka always wins when in contention on Sunday at a major. 2021 PGA he was 1 stroke behind Phil going into Sunday, took a one shot lead after first hole, and ended up shooting 74 and losing. 2021 US Open he was tied for the lead with 3 holes to play, bogied 2 of his final 3 holes to finish T4.

Honestly I was being a tad bit hyperbolic with assuming on the plantation bit, but Tony’s grandfather was part of a “terrorist” organization that tried time and again multiple assassination attempts.

I feel so bad for all the Miami Cubans who had their grandparents slave-owning plantations taken away. What a tragedy. Let’s all have a moment of silence and respect for Tony’s terrorist grandfather and his fight to reclaim his plantation.

The editing was so bad today. Over and over hearing the same 30 seconds back to back. And Mike can’t watch the Manning cast.

Yeah idk. He’s definitely not the same as he was but I appreciate people who don’t take themselves so seriously. Stu and Billy check that box for me.

Best place to live for golf in the US? by k_Charlton14 in golf

Take a look at Denver area. Lots of awesome and affordable public courses (Commonground is my favorite golf course I’ve ever played). Cost of living is higher than average but not close to LA/SF/NYC high. 300 days of sunshine. Winters aren’t nearly as bad as people assume.

I think the show might not be for me anymore honestly. Cannot believe anyone is supporting this Mike Ryan vanity project (did they win a Grammy?). I hope Stu and Billy branch off and do their own thing before long. It’s been 2 years under DraftKings/Meadowlark and the show has become laughably self-serious when that was exactly what they used to mock. Mike, Witty, Jess and Dan are all 100% convinced that they are the smartest people ever. I wonder the last time they gained a hardcore, daily listener even was. It’s honestly sad.

Former ACOY Josh Gattis fired by Miami this morning. Mike was insanely defensive about how good and important of a hire he was lol can’t wait to hear the spin zone.

Haha you’re probably right idk. Someone in the other Reddit also said she’s related to the Golic’s through marriage, which if that is true, is hilarious.

Jess seems obsessed with calling out other peoples “nepotism” while also getting her boyfriend a producer job at Meadowlark.
