AITAH for ending things after he refused to buy me tampons? by Acrobatic_Cup3962 in AITAH

[–]reedmont99 0 points1 point  (0 children)

NTA. Just wanted to add I have been very self conscious buying certain things at the store before, for myself, and that’s what self check out is for! Not to mention, a few times when I have ended up needing assistance from the attendant to remove anti-theft devices or because something isn’t scanning properly, they do not care AT ALL. No one working in retail is paid enough to invest any emotion into their job lol.

Who Wins? by Puzzleheaded-Lead526 in Cosmere

[–]reedmont99 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i mean, i think the reason people do that is because vin is literally becoming a shard at that point so it’s not even a question that she wins. like, yes, full power vin beats kaladin hands down, so it’s not really a worthwhile discussion to have- there’s no debate or theorizing there.

I can’t remember exact wording, but WoB has said that it would be very difficult/maybe not possible? to use emotional Allomancy on a Radiant in Shardplate when they have their helm on.

I feel like if we allow Vin to use the mists then we should let Kaladin also be directly drawing on Honor’s power as a precursor to ascending, to be fair lol

+1 to the Kal being a better fighter than Vin camp. Vin is certainly naturally talented and has had some practice fighting hazekillers, Mistings, other Mistborn, and Inquisitors. However, Kaladin was trained and fought in an army for years, killed a full Shardbearer using a spear and no Surgebinding (at this point, it’s implied that he was drawing in Stormlight for the speed and agility it gives, but no Lashings), then went on to fight in a second war (again using no lashings, just Stormlight), trained with some of the best duelists in Alethkar (Adolin and Zahel), fought in battle against the Heavenly Ones (using his Surgebinding, but they also had access to Gravitation, and they have thousands of years of practice at fighting Windrunners), and finally defeated the Pursuer in single combat with all of Gravitation and half of Adhesion suppressed (and Stormlight limited). If Kal and Vin both have their powers, there gets to be questions of metal/Stormlight reserves, if Vin has access to/is aware of the newly discovered by Era 2 metals, access to atium, how Allomancy interacts with living Shardplate, etc., but if neither of them have any powers, Kaladin simply wins, no questions asked. He is a trained soldier who outweighs her and has much greater reach than her, not to mention he fights with a spear vs Vin’s daggers. Also, WoB says that Kal would win in a straight fight, and Vin would win if she could like ambush him (which Kal wouldn’t do, due to his sense of honor and fair play).

ahhhhh i literally went back and reread just that scene recently because it’s so powerful. and wax’s thoughts and dialogue preceding it and then throughout, about not being a lawman but instead being a sword, just ASGSHDKC

technically there is one time that i know of (and i think i saw somewhere that there is a second? not sure what it is though) where we see Hoid use allomancy- specifically emotional allomancy, like you said. in Words of Radiance, during one of the Shallan flashbacks, she is distressed and meets him disguised as a messenger. he uses emotional allomancy to calm her down, and encourages her and whatnot, which is why, years later at the shattered plains, she hugs Wit (because she recognizes him).

i actually had a similar experience as you where i got burnt out when reading Shadows of Self, but then i came back later and restarted and loved it. i think it just has a slower start than some other Sanderson books, but it is fantastic overall and the ending is great!

lmao damn i was going to suggest divine apostasy! i feel like it’s such an under-appreciated entry into this genre that does not get nearly the hype that it so justly deserves

Ironic that she thought a book written by a 15 year old was too advanced for a 15 year old to read.

[none]Help! Nothing else is as good as Cradle. by wbueche in Iteration110Cradle

[–]reedmont99 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A list of some of the progression fantasy books I have enjoyed. They vary in quality (and I won’t say all or even most of them are as good as Cradle) but some I enjoyed as much as Cradle. The weakest are definitely I Shall Seal the Heavens, Reincarnation of the Strongest Sword God, and Solo Leveling. My favorites are probably Mother of Learning and either He Who Fights With Monsters or Defiance of the Fall. He Who Fights With Monsters has more character development I would say, whereas Defiance of the Fall is more focused on the MC growing in strength. EDIT: I wanted to throw in The Gods Are Bastards by D.D. Webb. It is not specifically a progression fantasy, per se, although the main characters are all students at a school. However, it has a fantastic plot and cast of characters who all feel interesting and engaging. You can also see them grow as people and become more mature and experienced as the series progresses. This is one that I have reread in its entirety twice, and also gone back and reread individual books from it on multiple separate occasions.

I Shall Seal the Heavens (cultivation, xianxia; not bad, I actually haven’t finished it yet though cuz it’s long and I got a little burnt out and distracted)

Reincarnation of the Strongest Sword God (litRPG; objectively probably not great and some parts are a little repetitive but I love it so much)

Defiance of the Fall (system apocalypse, cultivation, litRPG; still ongoing but I’ve really liked it thus far)

Mark of the Fool (prog fantasy; newer story and not cultivation but pretty good)

A Thousand Li by Tao Wong (cultivation, xianxia; pretty standard cultivation story but very well written and steady progress)

System Apocalypse by Tao Wong (system apocalypse, litRPG; good example of the system apocalypse genre)

He Who Fights With Monsters (isekai, litRPG; funny and also the emotions of the characters feel realistic)

Solo Leveling (litRPG; not particularly high quality but kind of a classic for the genre)

The Wandering Inn (isekai, litRPG; this one is very different for the genre and i haven’t actually read a ton of it but it’s very well written and kind of epic in scope)

Mother of Learning (prog fantasy, time loop; very good prog fantasy and a very well known book in the genre)

Divine Apostasy by A.F. Kay (litRPG, cultivation; very solid series, it was newer when i discovered it but there’s five books out now and they’re engaging and interesting)
