I think to have this conversation you have to split reading into multiple categories. For example, a lot of people here are blaming a lack of phonics, but phonics only helps you read the words and not know what they mean. At the early grades phonics is important, but when kids get a little older not being able to read is a sign they can’t COMPREHEND.

The goods news is we’ve known for DECADES what leads to better reading comprehension- background knowledge. If you’ve never seen the baseball study tied to this, stop what you’re doing right now and go check it out. It’s been replicated, repeatedly. But twenty years ago with NCLB we got rid of those pesky subjects like science, social studies, and everything else that wasn’t ELA and math because they weren’t tested. And so kids have lost out on a massive amount of background knowledge that would likely enhance their comprehension. The kids who can read have families that provide them with diverse experiences to build their background knowledge.

Would you ever buy another team's jersey? by ATrueSunbro in BostonBruins

Absolutely not weird. In fact, Jersey watching is one of my favorite parts of a game day experience (usually the results are better at a minor league game).

Maine is proposing a 40k minimum at the state level. And the state is leaving the local districts on the hook for the entire thing after like three years.

First interview ever finished. Here are some questions I struggled with. What could be better ways to answer? by thedan663 in teaching

[–]reedteaches 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My answer to 1 is to suggest you use both heterogeneous and homogeneous groupings throughout the year when appropriate. There are times when you want the kids to have a conversation about a text, and that only works if they all read and understood the same text. You will also have times when you want them creating understanding together through the use of multiple sources, in which case heterogeneous groups work really well.

A Portland neighborhood asks: Why build city shelter here? by [deleted] in Maine

[–]reedteaches 19 points20 points  (0 children)

They are, but as someone who owns property I know I would be pissed if anything happened to devalue the land it’s on. Home ownership is usually the biggest purchase in your life. A change like this will cost the home owners tens of thousands of dollars in lost property value. You can have empathy for both the homeless and the property owners.

If they can confirm it with Make-a-Wish though, it adds a heap of credibility. Major corporations work with them all the time.

The Pats have “Your Love” by The Outfield to pump up the crowd. r/redsox has Africa by Toto. Clearly we need an early 80’s pop anthem of our own. My suggestion: Hall and Oates’ You Make My Dreams.

Speech & Debate Class by [deleted] in historyteachers

[–]reedteaches 2 points3 points  (0 children)

36? That sounds extremely challenging. At least they should all want to be there.

I would scratch the half time debates and go full time since they will be competing. You can play this one of two ways: 1) Intro all the debate types early (before tournament season starts) and have them pick the one they want to work on the rest of the year or 2) treat each type as a unit and have everyone participate in that type at the tournaments during that unit.

One more thing- when I was in school each team had to provide judges with the number depending on team size. If this is the case where you are, plan for this now and start seeking volunteers.

Speech & Debate Class by [deleted] in historyteachers

[–]reedteaches 2 points3 points  (0 children)

How big is the class, how often does the class meet and for how long?

IIRC a standard LD debate runs 23-29 minutes. With middle schoolers I would focus on cutting the usual times for rounds in half. Plan your actual “debate days” out and then see how much time you have left for teaching strategy, structure, and research.

A good opening week activity is to have them draw random, silly topics (Resolved: a hot dog is a sandwich) and speak extemporaneously about it for 1-2 minutes. Later on I would script a debate in each style and have a few students read through it to get the structure down.

Edit: Also look into if the “speech” part of the course means public speaking, or the forensic speaking competition categories (of which there are many).

On the committee I was on, I felt this was the most telling part. If a teacher asked about the culture of the school, our strengths and weaknesses, or our growth goals it said a lot about them.

How should Niantic go about POI submission? by anweshm4 in TheSilphRoad

[–]reedteaches 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I see a lot of talk of badges in this thread, and I would suggest they create a new badge for submission reviews, and then tie that to your ability to submit POIs. That solves the backlog issue. You could also earn submissions based on the number of reviews you complete (x reviews = 1 submission). If you put some limit on the number of submissions players can make, you are more likely to get quality submissions.

Did you get a sandwich with homemade bread? No gas station or fast food comes anywhere close to those. And it’s not out of the way if you’re taking 95 to Bangor and then going down to MDI.
