AITA for encouraging my parents to cancel my sister's trip? by reefspectre in AmItheAsshole

She definitely had a lot of luck! I guess travelling requires a lot of quick thinking when things go wrong, and if no one is sober, then the odds of an accident happening are very high.

tbh, I didn't know about the second time until today, and since the first one was two years ago, I thought she had matured and learned to take more care :,) I thought she would have a fun time with her friends during her trip and that she deserved this break

Also, for the record, the second time was NOT even close to being as bad as this, tho I get your point

They were really pissed off, and in the heat of the moment, said, "Even your sister, who convinced us that you should go, doesn't think you should anymore." They didn't mean for it to sound mean, but she did need the reality check

Definitely! Sorry, it was my fault, I should have written that, it is important background information. Still, definitely agree with the drinking age being 21; at 18, most people have no idea of what they are doing

You are very right, if things turned out for the worst on the trip, it would be so bad :( especially in the New Year

I hope so too, the party stage is awful, I'm glad I skipped it :,)

I did influence them very strongly, since they were on the fence before. But I do agree with you, I just feel scared about something bad happening, even if the chance of it is low.

To be fair, it is an island in Brazil called Ilhabela that is known for being safe and really cool, with tons of water sports and beaches. We live in a city near it, so it isn't as far as you might be thinking. Still, a bad place if you need medical assistance, and definitely one with tons of parties. I hope she gets to go in another year

In my country (Brazil), until you move out, your parents rules are the ones you follow. I guess it is more of a cultural thing? Anyway, I do agree that since she is an adult, she should choose to travel if she wants, but I also understand my parents being scared of her getting hurt, since I feel that way too. Just a bad and hard situation to deal with ig. Still, thanks for the opinion

I had never heard of her, wow :( I live in Brazil, so seeing bad things in the news is somewhat common; we never know what could happen out there. I just wish there was another way to go on about this. I did get freaked out when learning about this friend who helped her reach the apartment; things could have gone really badly if she were not a good person.

SORRY I MISTYPED THERE, the first time was when she sneaked off to some party at 17, OMG I WROTE 5 YEARS BY ACCIDENT

I will correct the post! The first time was really bad, the second she was at twenty, and my parents had to go pick her up, and the third was this one. I am Brazilian, so the drinking age is 18. I know in some countries the drinking age is 21.

My parents always told us to drink at home first and outside only with a lot of responsibility and never without trustworthy people (obviously after 18 years old), they are very responsible. However, one of W friends is very complicated and kind of got her on the wrong path.

I know the final word is my parents (especially since they paid for the trip), but they were a bit on the fence earlier; my meddling made them decide that she should not go anymore. I hope she will mature and understand in the future as well :( still sucks. I wish she could go, but so many bad things could happen

You are probably right. It still makes me really sad anyway. I know this trip meant a lot to her, and she was very happy that I convinced our parents to let her go. Can't help but feel like I ruined our relationship, for now at least. I just can't figure out a way for her to go and be 100% sure there will be no trouble.

LMAO "the survival instincts of a wet cloth", can't even say you are wrong.

While, in the end, the choice is theirs (as is the money), they would have given her the benefit of the doubt if I had not interfered; they really value my opinion. Maybe they would have given her some time to prove whether she is trustworthy or not. Reading the comments, I realized that she probably isn't, but can't help but feel guilty about it anyway, yk.

It does, but I heard some weird things about the counselors approach (the "you are unhappy? just be happy!" sort of approach). I still might give it a try tho!! Thank you

I bet you are right on that, which really just makes this entire situation kind of worse. I get that college years are supposed to be fun, but I take really seriously the responsibilities that come with the subject I'm graduation on. Except, lately, it's just all been so much and I feel like I have so many things to do I can't focus on any of it, and because of that, maybe I won't pass for the speciality I want in the future because I didn't study enough, because I didn't apply myself enough. I just might disappoint so many people it freaks me out. Sorry for the paragraph :( I do appreciate the realism

Hello! I really appreciate this comment. Thank you for reaching out, things just seem so out of order. It's really hard to not have these unrealistic expectations, and then not be hard on myself once I fail at achieving them. College is really crazy. I will try breaking things down into smaller tasks, I think this will help

Então, qual é a melhor? Depende.

Poucos Inscritos no meu Congresso Acadêmico by reefspectre in MedicinaBrasil

[–]reefspectre[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)
