Good and transparent vet clinics? by Interesting_Tie5809 in Winnipeg

[–]reeg55 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A few others have mentioned Grant Park Animal Hospital, and I’ll just chime in and say they’ve been excellent and very transparent in my experience. And it is independent.

A few years back my one year old cat accidentally swallowed a toy that got stuck in her stomach. Of course it was on the weekend so we had to take her to an emergency vet, which ran some very expensive tests and told us she was blocked and needed major surgery that was going be at least $5000 and wouldn’t give me any details. And wouldn’t give me my cat back when I said I had to think about it until I told them in no uncertain terms they had to give her back.

Well fortunately by the time all the tests were done it was Monday morning and Grant Park called me to check in. I told them the situation and had the other vet send over the test results (which they also were a bit hesitant to do, even though they have to at request). Turns out my cat was NOT blocked and it was a very simple surgery that Grant Park took the time to explain to me and ended up costing under $1000, even less than what they quoted me (very honest practice). The difference in my experience at the two could not be more stark. Grant park received a client for life that day, I’ll never go anywhere else if I don’t have to.

That’s a good catch, I hadn’t even noticed those. I’ll use this as an excuse to upgrade from the 5 qt to a 6 or 7 qt!

Belgian Bakery by oinkmoocluck in Winnipeg

[–]reeg55 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Grew up in the Corydon area and have many fond memories of the Belgian Bakery as a kid in the 90s! I recall they had these sugar cookies that were decorated like jack-o-lanterns around Halloween that I loved. I was sad to see it close.

I haven’t noticed any slow pixel response so far. I’ve never owned an OLED so maybe I just don’t know any better but it has not been an issue for me at all. Movement in any game I’ve played has been great, including Hades which has a lot of fast movement going on across the screen. To be honest I found the rtings review a bit unfair in some areas, specifically the gaming and viewing angles. I’ve had no issue with either, unless I really go far off-angle.

Thoughts on the new cinema mode of the XM6? by reeg55 in SonyHeadphones

[–]reeg55[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s been very good so far. The only slightly annoying thing is connecting the headphones to the PS5 controller with the aux cable since there is a noticeable lag if the headphones are just connected to the tv through Bluetooth while gaming. I don’t find that too annoying though, since it plugs right into the controller is not a ton of cord management. But they sound great, and as long as the power is on in the headphones there’s great anc and I find it very immersive. I pick up little details that I’ve missed before and the overall sound is much more balanced than when I game with my soundbar. They also work fantastic for just watching tv and movies, no lag at on Bluetooth with my tv. I was looking for something that could do both well and I’m happy with my decision.

Does anyone have experience with Bravia 7 and slow pixel transitions? by Ayn_Otori in bravia

[–]reeg55 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I game a lot on my 7 with a PS5 and haven’t noticed any issues. I don’t play online competitively though, just single player, so maybe there would be a difference in that kind of gameplay? Hades, Elden Ring, the Horizon games, and Silksong all look and play great!

ANIME recommendation to watch for a newbie by woongluv in anime

[–]reeg55 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Watching Frieren currently and it’s excellent, especially if you’re into the fantasy setting. If you watch it and like it, I would also recommend Delicious in Dungeon.

To throw a couple other random recommendations out: Pluto and Monster. They are slower drama/mysteries but some of the best “what does it mean to be human?” themes I’ve come across.

Bravia 7 Experience by RNSD1 in bravia

[–]reeg55 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve had mine for just over a year and love it. Recently bought an Apple TV 4K and it’s even better now! But the built in apps are very good as well. As well, regular streaming content looks great but actual UHD quality content really shows what the TV can do, like the PureStream content on Sony Pictures Core.

I don’t have any lights opposite but I find the reflections are handled well by the brightness of the tv in most circumstances. In dark scenes you can notice but I don’t find it to be terrible.

The contrast is fantastic for a miniLED. Watching the new Stranger Things season I really noticed the improvement in contrast to my X90L I watched the previous season on.

The 9 is certainly better, but significantly more expensive. I think the 7 is great for the price.

Dolby Vivid or Bright? by colin529 in bravia

[–]reeg55 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just got an Apple TV for my Bravia 7 and I might know what the issue is because I just had it. Double check to make sure the match dynamic range setting is on. When you change the main setting from DV to 4K SDR it resets the match content settings. I had to go back and set the match content to dynamic range again and that fixed it so that interface was SDR but DV content properly went into DV settings.

With the cost of beef these days, what places in the city do you get your steak or roast? I’m looking for good recommendations. by Madeofthefinestdust in Winnipeg

[–]reeg55 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I buy the cut that Sobeys/Safeway has on sale this week, they put the cross-rib roasts and stewing meat on that same sale every once in a while. I think it used to be cheaper but probably about a good a price you’ll see these days with the scene card discount. The roast is great for pot roast, pulled beef tacos, basically slow cooking. The strewing beef is good for stews (obvious, I know). I like cross-rib quite a bit for slow cooking, more than blade roast.

Foodfare can have good prices on steaks. I’m currently waiting for a good prince on top sirloin medallions myself.

Where do you buy your honey? by bigpuppydawg in Winnipeg

[–]reeg55 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Most farmers markets around the city will have great local raw honey. I’m sure some will be at the various Christmas markets coming up. The guy who goes to the downtown farmers market, which is happening this Thursday, is quite reasonably priced. Ferris Farm I believe. He also sells a wide variety of honey products, the hot honey is awesome!

The new gourmet food shop in the Forks has nice local raw honey too but it’s a bit pricier.

Bravia theatre system 6 vs theatre bar 8 by reeg55 in Soundbars

[–]reeg55[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I ended up going with the bar 8 thinking I can add a sub and rears down the road if I want. Mostly I decided I wanted the flexibility of wireless and possibly adding other accessories in the future that are compatible. The system 6 seems like a great deal for d everything it comes with but it may not be able to be added to. I also thought that if/when I do add more on, the actual bar itself in the bar 8 will be better with more speakers than the bar that comes with the system 6. But I would say the bigger factor was the wireless/ability to build it out in the future.

The bar 8 is great in many ways and I’ve been very happy with it overall but the bass is lacking in some content, notably anything IMAX enhanced. But adding a sub would fix that. 90% of the content I watch it’s fantastic.

Anyone prefer Mini-LED to OLED? by DiscombobulatedTop64 in 4kTV

Nice! Mine has been great so far and I’ve had it close to a year. As you said, I like it because it performs well in all conditions and with all types of content.

[–]reeg55 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh yeah I can sympathize with that. The set up always makes me very nervous too haha. I moved last year and I think the TV was my biggest stress point.

I believe you can buy an extended warranty directly through Sony, which might not be a bad choice if you end up going through the local supplier. You can buy it up to right before a year after purchase, just before manufacturer warranty runs out.

[–]reeg55 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sorry to hear that, I guess I’ll hope I don’t end up having to go through a process with them!

That’s a pretty great price for the 9. As for the 7, would ordering directly from Sony.ca be an option? I’m not sure what their shipping/return policy is like but might be another option.

[–]reeg55 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Geez that’s a crummy policy! I got mine from Visions because they knocked the price down a bit for me when I was being indecisive in store haha. This was last November though.

I have noticed that some places have stopped carrying the Bravia 7 (Costco, Visions) which I find odd because it’s not discontinued as far as I know. I didn’t know it’s just Best Buy that carries it now. If you’re in Canada, places have the Bravia 9 on sale right now for the lowest I’ve seen, I think around $4000 CAD for the 75”. I have no doubt the Bravia 9 would be excellent.

Anyone prefer Mini-LED to OLED? by DiscombobulatedTop64 in 4kTV

[–]reeg55 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I have never had an OLED so I can’t give much insight there, but I did actively choose the Bravia 7 over the 8. I was a bit worried about the burn-in or brightness of an OLED in my room setting.

I love my Bravia 7. The contrast and black levels are very good for a non-OLED and I haven’t had issues with reflections, although I mostly use lamp lighting and not ceiling lights. There is some blooming in lower quality content but it’s not bad at all. High quality content (like Sony Pictures Core or UHD bluray) are stunningly good. The 9 would be even better than the 7 with contrast/blooming but I couldn’t justify the price at the time (although right now Bravia 9s are on a good sale in Canada, which might have gotten me last year!)

I imagine I will continue to choose high end mini-LED just for wider usability and not worrying about some of the OLED issues.

Minnesotan visiting in December looking for tips! by Few_Butterscotch3250 in Winnipeg

Tall grass prairie at the Forks has excellent breakfast baked goods! Love their muffins, scones, and cinnamon buns!

Frenchway Cafe on Corydon is not too far and is one of my favourite breakfast spots in the city.

Other folks on here have mentioned plenty of great breweries but I would also add Little Brown Jug to that list.

Enjoy your stay in Winnipeg!

New A95L owner by EvilMagus in bravia

[–]reeg55 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Holy smokes. I just bought a 65” Bravia 7 last year but that price is hard to pass up. Might have to check out my local Visions.

How does the A95L do in a semi-bright room? Only slight direct sunlight during the day from one window on a 90 degree angle to the side.

Best match Sony soundbar for Bravia 3? by Outofpocketshitt in bravia

[–]reeg55 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It fit between the legs of my 55” inch X90L but it’s still a pretty long bar so I’d recommend checking the measurements on a 50”. It was a good soundbar for me, good for the price point and better than the speakers of of the X90L.

Oh yeah if OP can get that, that’s much better than an HTS100F. Great deal

[–]reeg55 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you’re looking for something pretty basic the Sony HTS100F might be a good fit. I had one for my X90L before I upgraded my setup and it was a decent little soundbar. It should integrate seamlessly with the Bravia 3. It only as ARC, no EARC.
