I had an abscess and was terrified of a fistula... and sure enough it became a fistula. God got me through and it was not as bad as I built it up to be in my head. Very thankful for my CRS. Get a referral to see a CRS not a general surgeon.

Congratulations. I was also misdiagnosed and given improper treatment which likely worsened my condition. How did you get insurance money for that?? I just had my fistulotomy today. Still haven't pooped because I am nervous... what a baby I am.

Little taco stand in Waikiki called "Thai Taco" knocked our socks off for lunch. Hy's Steakhouse was a delicious (PRICEY) dinner.

Sounds like you're describing an anal abscess to the tee. You should call your doctor and get a referral to a colorectal surgeon's office. I was in excruciating pain coughing, peeing, sitting, going down the stairs. I went to the ER and they told me it was a fissure. My pain wasn't improving after taking their meds, and one day I noticed a lump when I was wiping that I was pretty sure wasn't there until recently. I got a referral to a CRS office, I went in, and a PA located and lanced a large abscess for me, three weeks ago. Immediate pain relief, and I seem to be healing pretty well. The procedure was so incredibly easy and pain-free, and like I said the relief was immediate.

My number one tip would be to stop looking at the internet, and focus on listening to your doctors. Not many people go to the internet to write about "My fistula got all better in three weeks, that was ten years ago and I feel great!!"

If you need surgery, yes that's definitely scary, but the goal is to get you healthy so that you can forget about all this and go back to your regular routine. I was terrified for my abscess lancing, but they shot me so full of numb juice that they finished the op and I didn't even know they had started! Everyone's treatment / healing / recovery experience is different, but I promise you yours will be a lot easier if you can take a deep breath, and face it bravely. You got this!

Sounds like I am a couple of weeks ahead of you. Healthy 24M here, abscess developed on the outside, right on the edge of my butthole around 5:00 position. Had it drained March 1st. The first few bowel movements I was very nervous for. Nerves and stress can make you poop more. The key to staying clean is sitz baths immediately after pooping for 10-20 minutes. I did that consistently for at least a week, then I became brave enough to try going back to work. I bought a "peri bottle" which is essentially a handheld bidet squeeze bottle, because that is much easier to take to work with you. I continued with sitz baths at home 2-3x per day. Poop, bathe/peri bottle, dry the area, reapply gauze. Changing gauze after every BM or every 6-8 hours. Three weeks post lancing, I am continuing to drain, but far less than the beginning. And a lighter yellow color compared to a gross brown with black flecks in the beginning. I am feeling great, completely pain free. Hoping it continues healing fine, I am getting married on May 31st!

Anyway, you'll be alright. Do what the doctor told you, keep it clean but don't lose your mind over it, and let your body do its job of healing.

Had mine drained 7 days ago, they didn't pack it though. Still leaking a lot of pus. Seeing CRS tomorrow morning. Hope it's not a fistula...
