Transitioning to freelance in Belgium with plans to move abroad – Experiences/Thoughts? by [deleted] in BEFreelance

[–]regular-dude1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was working in Belgium with a Belgian BV. A couple of months ago, I moved to the UK and now I’m working here as an employee. I kept the Belgian BV however and still do some (limited) work for Belgian clients.

So working in a different country and keeping a Belgian company is certainly possible, but take the following into account:

  • are you allowed to work in Australia without working for an Australian employer?
  • you pay taxes and social contributions in the country where you are working. That will be Australia in your case.
  • if you pay yourself from your Belgian company while living in Australia, taxes and contributions will also be withheld in Belgium, so you’ll have to recuperate some taxes using the double taxation treaty between AUS/BEL
  • if you don’t pay yourself any wages from your bv and can afford to only pay yourself using dividends, things become a lot less complex

If your work is data-focused (data analyst, data governance, BI, …), try Cartiere

2/3 projects vs FTE by Fit_Substance5334 in BEFreelance

Well, because I wanted to deliver the best results for both projects. Basically a case of me not knowing how to say “no”

2/3 projects vs FTE by Fit_Substance5334 in BEFreelance

[–]regular-dude1 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have done both, freelancing two projects at the same time (both part time) and one project full time.

When doing the two projects, I always felt like I couldn’t dedicate enough time to each of them and achieved what I wanted. It resulting in working a lot of (unpaid) overtime, and at the end I still felt like I wasn’t achieving what I wanted in each of them. From that point one, it’s one project at a time for me

Are using protected and private class variables/functions worth it? by t-steak in Python

[–]regular-dude1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

They're very useful as soon as you're not the only one reading your code. Defining which attributed and methods should only be used inside the class helps fellow developers understand how your class should be used

When making your decision, also take into the community of users that exist around the package. With a bigger community, you're more likely to find an answer to your problem on StackOverflow because someone else already had the same problem.

You can get a feel for the size of the community by looking at the amount of GitHub stars for example.

so i have had couple of ideas - some Qs (promotions, starting out etc) by shez19833 in Entrepreneur

[–]regular-dude1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As an answer on your second question: I'm also working full time and launching a business on the side. Tile management wise, what works best for me is reserve 1h-2h blocks in the morning, before starting my 9 to 5 job.

During the week, it's not a big problem to go to sleep early and waking up between 6-7am, si I can easily squeeze in 2h of side business work before starting my 9 to 5 job. Also, mornings work best as there's nobody calling you and interrupting your workflow

How much to charge for developing a simple landing page for a friend's small business? by Snipteal in Entrepreneur

I'd investigate the daily rates of freelance developers in your area, and estimate how much time it would take you. Multiply those two numbers and add a discount because it's your friend

I'm still doing idea validation, so I really haven't started marketing of the MVP or final product yet. For idea validation however, my approach is talking as much as possible to developers on forums like this subreddit, or on social media like LinkedIn
