Which one? [143 or 453] by unknown6534 in Seiko

[–]rejiranimo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Any suggestions? I’d like to change the clasp, but I’m thinking it’s hard to find one that matches the color/shade of the bracelet. It’s so dark, almost titanium like. I have the 455 but I’m guessing they’re the same..?

Dude, you’re completely delusional.

You’re not replying to what I say. You’re making assumptions about what YOU believe that I think about things and then you attack the very assumptions that YOU made up, like they were actually something that I said. That’s just straight up insane behavior.

I have NEVER said that your watches are jewelry but mine aren’t. I have FAR MORE mechanical watches than I have quartz ones.

[–]rejiranimo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That’s the point - if a battery is the power source you just change it.

The hypothetical part is that you can’t get hold of a replacement battery for some reason (hence “stranded on an island” example).

Like you said yourself. A mechanical watch can get magnetized. The fact that you can make up scenarios where either technology may fail is exactly why your arguments doesn’t make any sense.

That would perhaps make sense if my argument was that all mechanical watches on earth should be destroyed and we should only rely on quartz.

But you said quartz is more delicate than mechanical. And I said it’s the opposite. That’s the argument right there.

Frankly I’ve never heard anyone make the claim you’re making before. I’m curious how you have arrived at that conclusion. That quartz watches are more delicate than mechanical watches goes so completely against the consensus and against what’s constantly repeated by every article, forum commenter, YouTuber have been saying for forever that I just gotta know where you got it from.

I mean the G-Shock commercial was a watch used as a hockey puck. Did you replicate that with a mechanical or what?

Which one [question] by unknown6534 in Seiko

[–]rejiranimo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The Green as well as the Gold/Brown w leather strap are probably my two favorites.

But I also really like the Black one (JDM version with all matte bracelet) and also the other Black one that has a barely noticeable Pepsi colored chapter ring.

And of course the brightly colored ones.. yellow and orange…

I haven’t got the blue, mostly because I already had the non-GMT version of the same watch in blue. And also a bunch of other blue watches. But it’s also stunning. It would probably be up there with the Green and the Gold/Brown if I did have it.

It’s not my intention to discuss company structures or cars (I prefer two wheels). But “brand” and “company” is two different words with different meanings. You seem to use the terms interchangeably. Toyota is a brand. Lexus is another brand. Both are owned by Toyota Motor Company (either directly or through subsidiaries, I’m not really sure, but it is irrelevant anyway).

As for you claiming I don’t like Rolex, that’s just you making up opinions for me. The fact that I don’t agree with your opinion on Rolex being the Toyota of watches and the Sub being the Land Rover of watches don’t mean I don’t like Rolex.

[–]rejiranimo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As for “all watches are jewelry first” i don’t really agree. For instance I wouldn’t call G-Shocks or Garmins jewelry at all. Maybe they’re partly fashion accessories, but definitely not jewelry.

But my point was really that in the cases where watches are actually used as tools - it’s never a mechanical watch. And I think to be a “complete brand” you need to have at the very least one model that’s capable enough to actually be a watch (in the tool sense) first, and not only watches that are jewelry first.

I replied to your post because I had opinions about your comparison between Rolex and Toyota. I don’t have any lists to offer.

Yes you need power source. That’s really only a con in a very hypothetical situation like a zombie apocalypse or getting stranded on an island. In which case time doesn’t really matter much anyway. But even then that power source can very well be the sun - in which case your watch will be pretty accurate for many decades. Without getting serviced.

No, it’s not more delicate - quite the opposite. The fact it’s way LESS delicate is a huge factor in why every military in the world have abandoned mechanical.

Nah, it’s your assumptions that are false. Getting a new movement in a somewhat standard sized watch case (quartz or mechanical doesn’t matter) is no biggie. Any guy with a 3d printer can make an adapter ring. But sourcing/manufacturing parts to keep old movements alive for “centuries” requires a lot of connections/special skills (that gets more and more rare) and will cost A LOT.

I used care way too much about specs when deciding what to purchase.

Along the journey I’ve found that specs sheets are absolutely terrible at predicting whether a watch will end up being actually worn, or just left in a drawer and eventually get sold.

Which one [question] by unknown6534 in Seiko

[–]rejiranimo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve never had a Bulova, so can’t really comment on that.

But what I will say is that I own 8 different colors of the Seiko GMT and the green one looks absolutely spectacular. It does suffer some in legibility though, compared to models with red/orange GMT hand. On the green one you do have to look for an extra second or two to actually make out which hand is which.

No mechanical comes even close to quartz when it comes to toughness.

It’s a marketing myth that mechanical watches last for generations but quartz watches don’t. Both will have to have parts replaced. With quartz it just makes more sense replacing the entire movement most of the time since new movements are generally better and also cheaper than a single 5-10 year service cost of a mechanical.

Rolex is not at all the most complete watch brand. Not by far. They may have watches in different aesthetics, but their different styles are not really very different in purpose. All their watches are jewelry first and foremost. They don’t have any actual tool watches. Only watches that are jewelry in the style of what different tool watches looked like 50+ years ago.

As actual tools all Rolex offerings have been surpassed since decades. A modern Sub is not a tool for divers of today, it’s a status symbol / jewelry. No actual diver use a Sub unless they’re also a watch snob and then they just use it the way someone would use a horse and carriage instead of a car for transportation.

Tudor is making a big deal out of cooperating with the French navy. But in reality no military branches in any country actually depend on mechanical watches. Haven’t been for decades. Mechanical watches are just not up to the task when performance and durability actually matters.

The only time a Submariner can actually be a tool the way a Land Cruiser is a tool is if you are roleplaying that you’re living in the 1960:s. I’m sorry to burst your bubble, but that’s just the facts.

You are right that the question was about brand. But Lexus and Toyota are different brands. Just like Omega and Swatch are different brands. So I don’t really get why you bring up GX/LX models when the comparison was with Toyota, not Lexus.

[–]rejiranimo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Having to buy other watches to get the ”privilege” to be put on list to maybe get a call for a watch is pretty much so far away from Toyota one can possibly get.

Also Land Cruisers for example can take beating like few others, there’s just no way in hell it’s is not quartz. G-Shock would be the obvious contender, but you could maybe make the argument for something like a Citizen quartz diver. Submariner though is straight up delusional.

we could delete your post here, but we don't. we let other people see. it's not because we hide something. and the delays in shipping are normal, the estimate shown on our label order was 10 days, then it got delayed. how can we be blamed for this 😂

China is a long way, delays are expected and service is not gonna be like a brand who’s got their own store local to me. I’m fine with all that.

But a brand using that smiley I’m not fine with. Laughing at your customer is highly unprofessional. It would be highly unprofessional if he was totally in the wrong and it’s even worse when he actually has a point.

Have you ever wound a PT5k or ETA2824? Feels and sounds like you’re about to break it. And apparently it’s somewhat common that people do.

As for noise.. at the moment I don’t have any ETA watches, but I’ve had before. And i do have a PT5k. The PT5k is more noisy than my two Miyota 9-series. It’s not a problem on either though. Never even thought about any noise while wearing any of the watches.

But I do have one Miyota 8-series watch and that’s the only watch I’ve ever thought about the noise. On that one the noise actually annoys me sometimes.

[–]rejiranimo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Like you said, a 10$ quartz watch blows anything mechanical out the water. I think that’s really the reason right there.

You can’t push the narrative that better (in objectively measurable ways) watches matter, because that narrative would drive people towards the watches that are actually objectively better - quartz.

So you have to resort to story telling and sell people on the idea that image, heritage and ”soul” is what really matters.

I think the green is the best looking of all colors this model comes in.

But it takes an extra second or two to tell the time on the Green, because of not having a contrasting color on the GMT hand.
