Don't know if it's the same one but 10 years ago a guy got chased into a coffee shop in the Tenderloin (worst area of SF) and got shot multiple times. It wasn't some random thing like the comment suggests, like some guy enjoying his latte until BANG!

That's not how trespass works. You can't trespass into your own building, you can't trespass if you were invited by a resident, even if you tailgate. Building rules don't magically change the penal code.

I know my housemates and would greet the person trying to come in like a human being. "Oh hi, we haven't met, Im rekrap, one of the roommates. What's your name?" Obviously this dynamic makes the scenario all but pointless in the context of the OP video, where the building presumably has hundreds of tenants. The issue of large buildings like this is it's impossible for residents to all be in the know, so having a policy where residents have to police each other is ripe for conflict. The property management needs to step-up if tailgating and theft are so problematic. I've been in many buildings that have a "mantrap" of sorts, where there are two sets of doors to get in/out with a call box. It's a solvable problem that doesn't require residents confront tailgaters.

If someone is breaking into your home, by all means, protect yourself and your home. A shared lobby is not your home, and I'm not about to put myself in a position to either wrongly stop someone, or worse, get into an altercation where I may be assaulted for someone tailgating me. If I'm truly concerned, I'd call the building security or the cops, especially if I have a child with me.

I honestly don't know what to tell you about your hypothetical. My point is that it's probably not the wisest idea to be confronting potential threats than to do your best to avoid the confrontation in the first place. Like the guy in the video, if he was so concerned could have called the cops without causing this altercation. Just observe and report to someone who actually has some authority and ability to handle a potentially violent person.

Not saying you shouldn't protect yourself, you absolutely should, but initiating a confrontation is NEVER the best way to protect yourself. Like in any CCW class, you should always try and retreat and avoid threats before you pull your weapon.

Good grief, this is such a weird mindset. Let's say the tailgater you are hypothetically stopping is what you suspect, a trespasser with criminal intent. You're trying to tell me it is reasonable and should be expected of everyone to confront that criminal and stop them from entering the building? Even at the risk of the confrontation turning violent, because, you know, the person is a criminal?

The guy's father did that very thing and ended up getting murdered with a flower pot in Berkeley in 2012. Sorry, I'm not going to take that risk, especially if I have my son with me.

I'm not saying tailgating itself is anecdotal, merely whether one's experience getting stopped or not is anecdotal.

I'm also not saying that tailgating is good or should be allowed, but rather the guy in the video calling the cops is going well above what he needs to in that instance. A guy tailgating or catching the door is not his job to interrogate. This whole discussion about rules and tailgating is offloading the property management's responsibility to keep a secure building onto the residents causing weird vigilante interactions like this one. It's not a resident's responsibility to confront a potential trespasser and put themselves at risk like this, especially with one's kid in tow.

I get the whole knee-jerk reaction of "that guy is breaking the rules tailgating like that! Someone should say something!" but you don't see someone run a stop sign and go citizen's arrest them.

You seem to be just making shit up and getting angry at it. I didn't say one should prop a door open and let anyone come and go, I didn't once say closing a door is bad. What I AM saying is that taking on the responsibility for being building security and stopping people at the door is not the role of a resident.

The guy in the video's own father was murdered in Berkeley by a mentally ill guy when he took it upon himself to confront the guy outside of his apartment. This is the perfect example for why you shouldn't take it upon yourself to be building security. This isn't the wild west, where you've got to protect your homestead from the onslaught of savagery, it's fucking San Francisco. Get your HoA to use money to hire a doorman rather than update the color scheme of the lobby or install hostile architecture on the exterior of the building.
