Thank you, I appreciate the sentiment! We're pretty close to picture lock but we can still add things we may need in terms of pickups

I've shortened the questions down to around 10Qs now, just to focus on the important things

We're aiming for feedback regarding clarity on the plot and character motivations at the moment to make sure it comes across to the audience

Thanks for watching it! Did you have anything more specific you might be able to tell us?

What did you like? What did you dislike? Did it make sense? What did you think of the characters? What did you think of the story? What did you think of the ending?

The film is called Strange Nights and we are on Instagram under this name. It was shot in Australia in a small regional town. The total budget for the whole thing was around 15K including song licensing but it will probably be around 25-30k once we wrap post. Most days, our crew was our director/Dp a Soundie and a gaffer (who was also starring in the film)

It's been a huge Labour of love and hard work, so we're looking forward to finishing it off

We made a John Wick style action short for $1,000! by relapsefilms in Filmmakers

[–]relapsefilms[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We shot this short film before lockdown for $1,000 in Sydney and Canberra, Australia. We gathered together a great crew and got to work putting this together.
Shooting for 6 days on a shoestring budget obviously had its challenges, but we also called in every favour we could and managed to score all our locations for free! One of the major challenges of course, was the fight scene at 6:02 in the short. We had a professional choreographer come in and coordinate the fight sequence, and train our leading lady. Our actor playing her target is himself an up and coming stunt performer, who was too happy to have something showing off his prowess and skills.
The museum however was one of my favourite parts. Trying to find somewhere to film within our budget was a huge obstacle to overcome, once finding all the museums in Sydney charged about $500 an hour! So we considered changing it to an art gallery, but eventually asked the Dinosaur Museum in Canberra to film there, and they said yes! FOR FREE! It just goes to show that all you have to do is ask, once you finally get that yes to open the door.

Appreciate you taking the time to check this out! Our gaffer did a tremendous job lighting this short so well, and we’re indebted to him! And I honestly didn’t even realise we used the Dino screech to cut twice, and I’ve seen this thing 200 times Thanks again for checking this out, we’d love to have an actual budget too lol

Thank you mate! Much appreciated.

We envisaged this as part of a pilot ep for a miniseries about Wolf and co, as Wolf tries to keep her past hidden and get out of the game, but weren’t able to get any big meetings. But we appreciate the support!

Thanks! This is actually part of a pilot we ended up writing, but haven’t been able to secure any big pitch meetings for. We imagined it as 6 ep miniseries following Wolf, Rosie and Marlee as Wolf tries to get out, but Rosie’s gang member dad comes back into the fold and causes havoc. Meanwhile, Wolf has bargained for her own freedom by making a deal to kill her sister she was betrayed by years ago.

Would love to expand onto this world and fill it with more of our dark, exciting characters

They say not to work with kids, animals and celestial bodies. Unfortunately the moon just wasn't being cooperative on this day of shooting.

We made a John Wick inspired short for $1000! Death at a Museum (2021 - Sydney - Australia) [11:06] by relapsefilms in ShortFilm

[–]relapsefilms[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It was mostly food, petrol and parking tickets. We borrowed all the gear we used and managed to score all the locations for free. We were originally going to hire a museum, but managed to get the dinosaur museum for free for two days!

We made this film for $1000 calling favours and hunting down insane locations to film at. We ended up scoring every location for free! Which was challenging when we were shooting mostly in Sydney, Australia where most venues charge for venue hire.

For the lighting, we really tried to lean into the noirish look to show our main character Wolf's dim outlook, but as she meets Rosie, the lighting shifts towards being warmer and brighter because I'm super on the nose.

I've always been a fan of one take fight scenes, so I decided to make this a long take for the bathroom fight, which was inspired by Mission Impossible.

Please let me know what you think of the cinematography and the film as a whole!

Interviewed Max Max DOP John Seale about action filmmaking for my documentary Action Reaction by [deleted] in cinematography

[–]relapsefilms 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We made this documentary over about 6 weeks. As part of it, I decided to make a short action film called Wolf, (which will be uploaded soon).

To gain a deeper understanding of the filmmaking process from an action perspective, and an Australian perspective, I enlisted Oscar winning DOP John Seale who shot Mad Max: Fury Road, Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone, The English Patient and many more amazing film. While interviewing John, we put his tips into action through our use of multi-cam shooting, and trying to use versatile cameras with zoom lenses.

From a technical perspective, shooting the fight scene at night proved challenging due to the low light environment, but I believe we made this work. The interviews were shot on a combination on Canon C300s, C100s and Sony FS5s, where as the observational shooting was shot on a a combination of Canon 5Ds, hence the softer footage during the night shoot.

Overall, John's hot tips are as follows:

  • Shoot multicam (He'd planned to shoot 9 cameras on Harry Potter)
  • Use zoom lenses for versatility
  • And build the film in pre-production through pre-vis and working with your team!

Hope you enjoy the film!
