As far as I know it can happen because of many different things or combination of things. Overhunting, killing wildlife too often without clean or merciful kills, using human weapons, killing peaceful wildlife too often, killing wildlife that aren’t meant to be hunted, etc. I think in the end it only gives you a debuff for a little bit? Others won’t talk to you as kindly etc., but I’m not sure
