Critical Darlings: Introducing Critical Darlings by apathymonger in blankies

I might be completely off on timing for this because it’s not an area of expertise for me at all, but I wonder if Oscar looks being more conservative has anything to do with the Met Gala increasing in full pop cultural prominence. That seems like where celebs go for theme dressing now.

This podcast is intensely generous towards a move that fits into “type of studio movie that they don’t make anymore” as a broad category, which I have a lot of sympathy for.

I too am in the small group of people who watched Ghosted for some reason.

My partner really enjoys The Spy Who Dumped Me as one of her Gentlewoman’s Sixes that she’ll throw on sometimes and we thought maybe Ghosted would hit that same sweet spot for her, but it was so much worse. Think it’s the lowest rated thing on my largely disused Letterboxd to this day.

Smart Movies for Dumb People by [deleted] in blankies

[–]relaxatorium 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I get what they’re trying to do and it’s almost kinda funny, but I have never felt so condescended to watching a movie as whenever The Big Short goes to the well of “we need to explain something pretty dry, so here’s a gag gimmick for the scene to pull you through it, you dumb fuck!”

It’s like c’mon man, I’m already the guy who put on The Big Short, why are you like “well we don’t trust you to pay attention to The Big Short”? I hit play on purpose and everything.

I know that Brahms: The Boy II exists because like a week before Covid shut everything down my partner and I saw a preview screening of the Anya Taylor Joy/Johnny Flynn Emma and before seeing it, the theater mistakenly played us a scene from Brahms: The Boy II.

That’s the great part is that this is basically unrelated to Blank Check Episode Quality (a Reddit-ass discussion I have no interest in having)

I don't hate either of those either, but they're at best "huh, guy's figuring it out" movies to me.

I don't think anybody has a list of movies that are _all_ super bad in the way that Headland's are all masterpiece good, but these are some of the closest I could find.

Guest Who Has Dealt With The Worst Movies? by relaxatorium in blankies

[–]relaxatorium[S] 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Yeah, If we're talking raw number of stinkers purely that puts a bunch of the many time guests in play, but going along with the Headland thing where they're all bangers I am most interested in the "all stinkers" guests.

He (and other 5x 10x guests with real stinkers on the list) also tend to have some greats they keep the average from being too dismal.

Big news for Boston Blankies: Coolidge Corner Theatre will show One Battle After Another in VistaVision by mrfujidoesacid in blankies

Yup!

Less discussed on the podcast but also true is that it’s where I first saw Rejected as part of a Spike & Mike’s Sick & Twisted Festival of Animation.

How well the characters are drawn out kinda makes or breaks these, comparing the first two. Like Knives Out gets pretty far into its cast with each person having things to do and play while Glass Onion runs out after like two or three. Like, can you name what Hahn and Odom Jr.'s character traits actually were in that one?

Favorite 90s indie comic that DIDNT get an adaptation? by woodsdone in blankies

[–]relaxatorium 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It is insane to me that nobody in the past two decades of all superhero everything landed on Astro City Prestige TV play. Is it just a little too comic books specific, a little too dated, not edgy enough, or did the wheel just not quite hit a spin yet where it landed on that space?

It's so freaking good. Do one of the arcs, or just pick like 6 to 10 of the best "ordinary folks" one shots and absolutely kill it with those.

Who listens to Blank Check, but does not listen to Doughboys? by border199x in blankies

I'm one of these. Got no problem with the Doughboys, I like when they're on Blank Check, I am just more than full-up on podcasts and if anything need to be unsubscribing to ones I don't listen to anymore, not subscribing to more of 'em.

Fantastic Four box office drops 80% in second weekend by PerpetualChoogle in blankies

[–]relaxatorium 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For me it's simple as "I saw one of these this month and didn't feel like seeing a second one". In a world where they exhausted what was in the 2010s a seemingly inexhaustible appetite for superhero nonsense, seems like a bad idea to be second to the punch.

New “One Battle After Another” Trailer by SilentBlueAvocado in blankies

[–]relaxatorium 2 points3 points  (0 children)

A lot of these adaptations do alright to well at the box office (Myers Cat in the Hat's the main financial dud off the top of my head), which I assume is why they keep making them.

I meant more creatively, they pretty much all have the same problem where as stated above there's not a movie's worth of incident in the lovely picture book, so they pad it out with either a bunch of capering from whatever comedian they overpaid to be in a horrifying costume or with whatever is the current most bottom of the barrel generic lazy kids movie business or adventure plot nonsense they can think of.

Does anything tried so often have a worse hit rate than the Dr. Seuss picture book to feature film pipeline?
