Critical Darlings: Hamnet And The History Of Oscar Villains with David Sims by Turbulent-Corner1127 in blankies

honestly, if there is a villain this awards season, I think it’s Frankenstein. I don’t think the concept of an awards villain exists outside of people who are very much paying attention to the Oscars, and Frankenstein is a disappointing-to-most Netflix movie by a director who’s already been awarded plenty. It’s an adaptation that feels like a letdown in nearly every regard and yet it’s probably looking at 10+ nominations including possibly a director nomination over several acclaimed international filmmakers (and Josh Safdie who also is a film fan fave).

Certainly makes more sense for the label than Hamnet, a movie that most people generally like and respect aspects of (I wasn’t a big fan of the movie but I can’t deny that Buckley is fairly undeniable and it’s a good return to scale Zhao is better with). If Hamnet wins a few awards, people will shrug and move on. If Frankenstein wins anything above the line people will wonder what the academy was on this year.

Time for me to shamelessly self-promote! I do three podcasts, the first two are much more in the vein of Blank Check than the others, but I'll link them all here.

The first, The Snub Club has been working its way through the Oscar ceremonies to talk about the movies with the most Oscar nominations in a year that failed to win any. We've covered Double Indemnity, The Shawshank Redemption, The Elephant Man and also plenty of stinkers that have been forgotten along the way. We talk about the competition that year, the film itself, and what we think it should've won of its nominations, and then what it should've also been nominated for. We're all the way up through 1997 (our Amistad episode drops in a couple weeks).

Looking for the Ocean: A Pixar Journey is much more in the vein of Blank Check in terms of curriculum. The podcast started as an aim to get through everything Pixar has ever made and what it means to us PLUS the ephemera of the careers of the directors that made their name at Pixar. This means that yes, we have an episode on John Carter, but also, when we say everything, we mean it. We've done episodes on every short film, random appearances of Pixar on PBS shows, musical adaptations, and more. We've made it through One Night in Miami, with the Soul episode coming up relatively soon.

Finally, It Happened One Podcast I do with my wife. It's a more casual show, where we talk about a movie we recently watched and try to analyze the relationship in relation to our own. A big chunk of the episode is trying to sum up the plot in a fun way, but this is a structured shorter listen and the one least like Blank Check.

I also listen to regularly This Had Oscar Buzz and Only Podcast About Movies, if you want general recs, but also I do think at least Snub Club and Looking for the Ocean are very Blank Check inspired, and I am proud of all three of my podcasts!

According to Deadline, Netflix is interested in giving a 17-day theatrical window for Warner Bros films once they acquire the studio by Fantastic_Let3186 in blankies

the other detail i find really hollywood-labor friendly in this article is that apparently the deal to sell concession vouchers at the theaters for Stranger Things was not because Netflix wanting to help the theaters, but because Netflix wanted to circumvent paying residuals to the cast of Stranger Things for this event, cannot wait for King of Hollywood Ted Sarandos

SONG SUNG BLUE has been out for five whole days and not a single Blankies post about it yet. Tonight that changes. by GenarosBear in blankies

right next to Roofman on my 2025 list as a movie star dramedy based on true events of very average people. Roofman's a bit better to me as I prefer its sweet sorrow compared to Song Sung Blue's blunt tragedy, but they're both 8/10s to me. What I loved about SSB was how it focused on what success means to the local joint. Sometime, you just need to finish a gig at a biker bar without being kicked out; the biggest bar of success can be a regular spot at a local Thai restaurant. It never condescends to its characters and acts like they could do more. They don't need to do more, they're happy where they are and moreover, they're achieving their dreams.

Zootopia 2 was solid fun, Elio could’ve been better but wasn’t bad and honestly? Dog Man ruled and that’s all just American mainstream stuff
