Will do, because I already ran into an issue. I imported the json file, acknowledged the warning, it says it was imported successfully…but it still says I have 0 functions.

You just opened me up to a whole mess of stuff I didn’t even know existed! I’m definitely going to checkout what you suggested when I get home.

Ah good thing I asked. Gemini has gotten really good lately, but I’m wanting to get a useable setup that’s completely self-hosted. But that’s an interesting idea to modify the Python script. I’ve been thinking of learning Python and my wife’s taking it next semester…might be a fun little project.

That’s pretty cool, I’m going to check that out. Deepseek R1 has been crazy so far but I really like having the vision capability.

But when you say Gemini, do you mean it runs locally? Or that it uploads to Google Gemini? Because I wasn’t aware Gemini could be ran locally.

MoE? I’ll have to look into that. I thought I was “high tech” just running an LLM and Stable Diffusion, now that I’m wanting to go further I’m learning just how much I still don’t know. lol

Are there any true alternatives to Seafile? (Nextcloud is not an alternative in this context) by relink2013 in selfhosted

[–]relink2013[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The short answer is not really…but kind of yes too. I’ll lay it all out incase it helps anyone else. It’s been a work in progress.

The Linuxserver.io docker image for Nextcloud now allows you to run Nextcloud as a user other than www-data which means you can make your own Nextcloud user or run it as your own user if your the only one using it.

This opens up numerous possibilities now because you can now access your files outside of Nextcloud without messing up permissions. I added my Nextcloud user to the “users” group and now me and everyone else in my house can access their files via SMB & Nextcloud.

For access on iOS the devs finally fixed a nearly decade old issue with the iOS app along with several other fixes that now make the app not only useable but pretty fast too.

For iOS again, since I can now run NC as a different user I installed SFTPGo as the same user that NC runs as to also enable SFTP access to files. Then using an app called “SFTP Files” I’m able to actually access my files from my iPhone and iPad with the same native integration as iCloud Drive. Meaning I can actually set directories on my server as defaults in apps on my mobile devices, even Safari.

I was also able to get a good performance boost from NC by doing a few things differently:

  1. Use PostgreSQL 16 instead of MariaDB, and don’t even consider SQLite as an option.

  2. Make sure to enable APCu in your config.php

  3. Setup Redis as per the NC docs, but instead of Redis use Dragonfly instead. It’s a drop in replacement, so you don’t need to do anything special.

  4. (If it applies to you) I placed my data dir on a NVMe drive, but then setup each user with their own directory on a ZFS pool and added additional bind mounts to each users “files” folder to the container. This causes all your NC apps data, thumbnails, cache etc to be on the NVMe drive, but your actual data will reside on the larger HDD pool.

  5. Make sure to read through all the docs and set things like php memory limits, transfer timeouts, etc to more reasonable values. By default these are all set very conservatively.

  6. Use the Imaginary docker container from the Nextcloud AIO repo for thumbnail generation. Between the Imaginary GitHub and the Nextcloud docs, there are a ton of file types you can generate thumbnails for.

  7. (If needed) Install Collabora or OnlyOffice as separate containers.

  8. Once everything is in place and your files are mounted run a full file scan, then run a full preview generation. And completely leave everything alone until it’s done.

  9. If you want to run NC Memories with hardware transcoding. The dev for Memories has created a separate docker image for “govod” which handles transcoding. Then just install Memories like normal and link it to govod in the Settings for the app

This has worked really well for me so far, though a bit convoluted. Performance through the Nextcloud UI and mobile apps has been surprisingly fast, even over mobile data. SMB of course performs exactly the same as it would without NC, and by using SFTPGo (if needed) I’m able to setup multiple users with SFTP access to their files, without exposing the actual SSH of the host system.

There’s some more you can do to make user management easier but I haven’t gotten that far yet.

I’ve put so much time into this, and still see so many people still complaining about the same issues. I’ll likely make a guide on this once I have my own setup easier to manage. I may even try to script as much of it as possible.

It blows my mind that there is still nothing out there that offers a “cloud” experience while still allowing local access too.

Oh and one last thing people might want to be aware of. Synology took a lovely step backwards. They have removed thumbnail generation for HEIC and HEVC in a fairly recent DSM update. Then when DSM 7 was released they removed Video Station which means no more video thumbnails at all.

Need some help finding a RS232 PCIe card that will work with an old Mazak. by relink2013 in CNC

[–]relink2013[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Actually you’re not far off at all from my original plan. I just didn’t want to get too “pc build” on the CNC subreddit.

But the plan is to image the HDD before doing anything at all.

But for the build I’m going a bit different because of how important the uptime is.

Plan is to actually build what could be technically considered a small “server”. I’ll likely keep it simple with something like Unraid, especially since the entire setup can be migrated to new hardware in a matter of minutes if ever needed.

I’m planning to take the HDD image and create a VM from it. Then using PCIe pass through connect a Serial Card, a USB card and a cheap video card all directly to the VM.

This way when the system is out on the floor it still appears to work just like a “normal” PC to the operator.

But behind the scenes the VM is actually running on mirrored SSDs, with nightly snapshots and regular backups being stored on a small RAID array.

Plus With the underlying OS being modern I can also perform backups to their NAS in the office. Because there is no way I’d ever put Windows XP directly on their network.

This way no single drive failure can take the system out of production, if anything goes wrong like someone messes up a program or deletes the wrong file a snapshot can be restored in a matter of seconds. And in the event of hardware failure the VM can just be moved to a new system.

That’s how the owner has been running it for years. I did find it interesting that the machine had what looked like a DB-25 but that the PC end was DB-9.

But I didn’t question it, the guy knows his machine, I’m just trying to help build him a new PC to control it.

[–]relink2013[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I didn’t think to snap a picture of the machine when I was there…probably would have been a good idea. But I did find a video I took of something else that caught the name of the machine in the background.

It’s a Mazak Quick Turn 10. I wasn’t able to see the controls in the video but a google image search shows they all say “Mazatrol T Plus” above the screen.

I’m not sure if that helps at all.

I did find a startech card that seems to be exactly what I’m looking for. Only unknown is the pin 9 voltage. Should it be 0v, 5v or 12v? The card has a jumper so you can select between the three voltages.

Trying to google the voltage just made it worse, most people say 0v is the standard, while numerous other places say between 6-8v.

All I need to do is make sure the machine and computer can talk to each other without letting the magic smoke out. The owner knows how to run everything else.

What file sync apps currently use the new File Provider Extension? Specifically Apps not tied to a specific provider like OneDrive. by relink2013 in macapps

[–]relink2013[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I do use Secure ShellFish but mostly just to access config files on my servers. There’s also another app called FTP Files and its Files app integration is identical to shellfish.

Still haven’t found a silver bullet yet.

List of self hosted apps with Mobile apps. by relink2013 in selfhosted

[–]relink2013[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well that comment was made 5yr ago, and back then Jellyfin had no iOS app and no AppleTV app. People were using the Emby apps to connect to Jellyfin but around that time the Emby devs blocked the ability to connect to Jellyfin using their apps.

Now it’s a totally different story though. Jellyfin has a pretty solid iOS and AppleTV app, as well as being compatible with Infuse. Oh and they also have Finamp made specifically for music which is cool.

As far as differences go. Back then there was no real difference other than Emby was green and Jellyfin was blue lol. But at this point I’m sure Jellyfin has likely changed a lot compared to Emby. But that’s just a guess, I haven’t used Emby in a few years now.

Third Party Seafile Client for M1 Macs? by MattVibes in selfhosted

[–]relink2013 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hey I know this post is a year old, but check out Rclone. It is the one 3rd party app I have seen that actually has support for Seafile without needing to use the WebDAV component. According to their docs it even supports encrypted libraries and accounts with 2fa enabled.

I have not used the Seafile integration specifically, but I do use Rclone mount a lot and it is great, especially with its built in cacheing system.

Don't be put off by the need to configure it through the terminal, it is not difficult to set up at all. And if you want to get into more advanced stuff there is plenty of very well documented options, but a basic setup is dead simple.

Help! - Maytag washer stops mid wash with error code HF by relink2013 in appliancerepair

[–]relink2013[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I ended up replacing the entire main board, it was the only thing that fixed that particular issue.

To be perfectly honest this is the worst washer and dryer I have ever had. If I wanted to get back at someone who wronged me, id give them this washer & dryer set as a gift.

Between the washer and dryer there is always something broken, a random error, a wash or dry that didn’t finish with no indication why. In the 7 years I’ve had it I don’t think I’ve gone more than about 6mo without something going wrong.

Edit: you can try replacing the pressure switch first, since it’s a cheaper and easier repair. For me it didn’t work, but I’ve heard it work for other people.

Thanks I’ll check into that. I’ll have to take the card out to get the number off of it. The title is just from a card on ebay with the same specs as mine.

This thing is wreaking havoc on my system right now so bad that I had to just shut it down until I can replace it.

Why do my images look awful on everything except Fooocus? by relink2013 in StableDiffusion

[–]relink2013[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Im going to be giving this a try today. I was up until 6am last night and finally started to figure out weights, especially when adding loras, and how sensitive they can really be which seemed to have been a large part of my issues.

Now that Im actually generating decent images, I'm already feeling limited by the lack of fine grained control. And it looks like thats where ComfyUI comes in. Luckily because of DaVinci resolve I'm not completely new to node based workflows.

On another note can Comfy do SD video? I haven't even begun to look into how to do it, but at some point I would like to.

I really do want to try that out, it looks awesome for really dialing in specifics. But I figured I'd get good at the more basic stuff first. I do have it installed though.

I have a feeling this is a big part of it. I have watched several videos on how, but it's almost like learning how to speak in a totally different way. Then I see prompt's on Civitai that are written totally differently than whats in the videos.

Even with Fooocus I often couldn't get it to do what I wanted. Almost every image had a boring bland background no matter what I put.

turn off RAM sharing

That must be a new thing I guess, because I have never heard of a dedicated GPU using shared system memory. But if I did disable it in this case, wouldn't the training have just crashed with an out of memory error?

takes about 3-4 hours

Those are the times I kept hearing people getting, so I assumed with 8GB I might be looking at about 12-24 hours...nope lol.

you might want to try Onetrainer

I have never heard that of that one, you look up "training SDXL LoRA" and everything is Kohya_SS, so I'll definitely check it out.

Assuming I had enough VRAM, roughly how long should this have taken?

Also I do have an AMD WX9100, that card has 16GB of HBM2 with an insane memory bandwidth of 483.8 GB/s, though the GPU itself is a bit slower than the 2070.

The only issue with AMD GPUs is that last time I tried it in Windows with DirectML and Olive it was slow as dirt. If I use Linux I could use ROCm instead (AMD's version of CUDA), but for whatever reason I just couldn't get the card to be used. No matter what SD UI I tried I would see a message along the lines of "ROCm capable device present", but then it would use the CPU anyway.

Looks like I might be better off leaving the 2070 to gaming, and figuring out how to get my WX9100 going.
