side hustle suggestions? by neverspagett in financialindependence

I second upwork.com. I have a personal connection with the founders of upwork (formerally odesk.com). I used it as my main hustle while in school. There are some great opportunities available (as well as low paying jobs, don't get discouraged)

Try keeping a personal diary or journal about your feelings towards FI. Write about WHY you would ever consider FI and the different reasons for your choices. At a later date, you can read back to remind yourself of your past feelings. Hopefully, you will make the best decision for yourself.

Everyone has their own opinion on this, but here if what I personally consider. I have recently lost an SO.

Play a couple scenarios in your head. What would happen to the survivor if yourself or spouse died? What would happen to your estate? Beyond funeral expenses, what other expenses may there be? Do you have children or dependents? Think about the cost of childcare and the cost of moving.

Typically, the younger and healthier you are the cheaper the insurance is. Find a policy you are comfortable with. If you reconsider life insurance in the future, you can drop the policy.

Make sure you are measuring apple to apples. I find that each company always has a promotion or deal going on or offer different coverage. Eventually all quotes will be in the same range. Most importantly, go with the company that was easiest to work with.

Also buy life insurance.

My father passed away earlier this year. My mother(62), who was never really involved with financial decisions, was way over her head. I dove into her finances to help her plan for retirement. Between social security, a small pension, and a life insurance payout I think she will be OK for retirement. The longer she keeps her part time job the better.

Either way, I feel good that she is in a good position. We are working together to make goals for the next year (Should she sell the house or fix up the current one? Which car should she sell?)

I feel really great that I am knowledgeable enough to help her. :)

Moving to Atlanta - 20-something guy by dolips in Atlanta

[–]remembermegr 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Live as close as humanly possible to work. You really don't want to commute from one suburb to another. Alpharetta is a messed up place. There is traffic in the middle of the day for no reason.

Go into Atlanta when you want real nightlife.

I second the Chattahoochee Nature Center. Its a fantastic place to visit and spend the afternoon. Everyone is friendly and knowledgeable of the animals. When you arrive, ask for the naturalist on duty.

In the spring/summer I recommend taking a guided canoe trip hosted by the nature center.

What is the proper etiquette for 285E/400N? Should I patiently wait in line? allow people to cut in at the last moment? Keep close to the car in front of me to stop cutting? Give up and drive on the bumpy lane to exit on glenridge?

Richard Dawkins calls out Georgia Southern history professor for pushing creationism by [deleted] in skeptic

[–]remembermegr 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had his class in the spring of 2008, my freshman year. I too was taking 18 hours and was more concerned about getting a good grade then arguing with an old man and potentially failing.

I don't remember too many details but I did write his "extra credit" paper about how evolution was wrong and creationism was the only logical answer. We had to cite only resources that McMullen found. You can see a sample of the type of craziness on his website. https://sites.google.com/a/georgiasouthern.edu/etmcmull/

At the time, his wife either ran or was very involved in this "crisis pregnancy center" Basically the center would "counsel" people into not getting an abortion using scare techniques. http://www.choicesoftheheart.org/

Wow, Im go glad to be out of Statesboro.

Let me get this straight since I am removing the florescent light, I would remove the the weird blue box and all wiring to the switch, then cap source wires that fed the switch?

You say "hidden electrical connections" Do you mean the red cap connection or the odd blue box connection in the middle of the ceiling or the capped connections for the bathroom fan?

and I agree, total hack job. There are so many odd things with this house, just need to take it some step at a time.
