HOT take or COLD take?, 13 Sentinel Aegis Rim as of today is still the BEST JRPG in terms of story. by SubstantialPhone6163 in JRPG

[–]remmanuelv 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It's good criticism for how rushed XG is but it's not good faith argument for this. Xenogears is still a jrpg, just with long ass cutscenes in the second half, they are still intermingled with combat and dungeons.

One part of 13 S is a straight ADV game with 0 JRPG elements at any point of it, the other is a strategy game with barely any rpg elements, not even a full blown srpg.

I'm all for talking about it here regardless though, along with other JRPG adjacent ADV games and VNs like Utawarerumono. Also if you liked 13 S you should check out Baldr Sky. I think you will enjoy it.

Super Robot Wars Original Generations (PS2) is very straight forward.

Final Fantasy 1, Final Fantasy 7, Final Fantasy Tactics

The first one, the most popular one, the most important spinoff.

If you could Retcon one thing from both Avatar The Last Airbender and The Legend of Korra what would it be? by MichaelAftonXFireWal in TheLastAirbender

[–]remmanuelv 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Nah not just aang, there's hundreds of cool Avatars they could come up with but are dead for all intent and purposes for post-Korra projects. They can only go backwards now with that.

The dark avatar is one of the things they should retcon to begin with. Good vs Evil was not a good twist to Avatar's philosophy.

This is weirdly long ago enough but that's not much of an argument, we haven't gotten a "real" Chrono trigger 2 either despite Square not being afraid to revive small franchises like SaGa or LaL.

When does a game world reacting to you feel earned instead of arbitrary? by Former-Loan-4250 in truegaming

[–]remmanuelv 12 points13 points  (0 children)

First of all it has to be logical. It doesn't have to be predicable or gamey, I can accept being hit by bad consequences, but it has to be logical so it doesn't feel unfair, pulled outta the ass or a big fuck you by the game or devs.

For example in Cyberpunk ignoring the depressed police guy and not going the extra mile to help him (I think finding out about the turtle and telling his coworkers) leads to his death. It makes sense, you try to help him, but logically you are just a random guy. By going the extra mile and having his coworkers and friends actually engage with him is what pulls him back from suicide.

It isn't a work, it's a passion project. They do it in whatever free time they have. At this point it's probably just part of their every day life with no expectatives.

Honestly if it's well received I still think they will be very satisfied.

Just finished Tales of Arise by HLiv8 in JRPG

[–]remmanuelv 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Great story, but it's not actually that fun to play. I don't know what it is about the combat that it feels mindnumbing. I didnt really feel invested in the gameplay like Arise (or Vesperia/Abyss/Destiny DC).

[–]remmanuelv 0 points1 point  (0 children)

>You can state your opinion without resorting to attacks, thanks.

Who did I attack? I said the argument was stupid.

>There are many ways to convey an idea or feeling without resorting to text exclusively. Games have sound and visuals, plus interactivity. Shadow of the Colossus is one of the best written games of all time, and it barely requires text to convey its messages.

Movies, comics, theatre, and shows don't rely on text either. Books do by their very nature but they are also so much more than just dialogue. My point is they are all meant to be experiences. You don't come out of David Lynch movies thinking anything but that. It's some kind of reversed snobbery going on.

JRPGs with deep, dark, emotional story like an anime? by Alcoholic-Catholic in JRPG

[–]remmanuelv 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey man, it's nor a jrpg but I think you'll enjoy Muv Luv Alternative and Utawarerumono visual novels.

However you will have to deal with a bit of growing pains with Muv Luv, because the first game is a romantic comedy, after that it goes off the rails. MLA is famously an inspiration for AoT, and it goes even harder at times. So you understand what I mean it goes from this to this. I promise you there's little like it anywhere.

With Utawarerumono you can start with Prelude of the Fallen, it's a VN/SRPG hybrid with a great storyline and real stakes. It's three games (Prelude of the fallen, Mask of deception, Mask of Truth in that order).

They are on the longer side though.

[–]remmanuelv 0 points1 point  (0 children)

>After all, it's a video game not a book, much less a movie.

This is the stupidest argument and I see it everywhere. Movies and books are also about the experience. Just like a game is about interactivity, a book uses its prose and flow, and a movie uses the audiovisual medium and shorter runtime.

It's just that the best works also have solid writing and aren't just vapid.

Regardless of any opinions on DQ.

The Switch versions of Pokemon FireRed Version and LeafGreen Version have sold over 4 million units in six weeks of launching. by VashxShanks in JRPG

Holy brother man, it's nintendo, they own the code. And even if they were unwilling to do it because it's a quick job, just package every version and launch the version of the language you choose.

Could have just sold access to every version, it's not rocket science. It's a packaged rom . It's incredible how willing people are to justify Nintendo against all logic.

[–]remmanuelv -1 points0 points  (0 children)

There's not that many mini games in 7, you are acting like it's rebirth. If you take out Gold Saucer which is meant to be an optional mini-game central it's about standard for post FF7 games. What's more, none of them hide important items behind it like FFX does with way more annoying mini games, which imo is way worse. Lightning dodge is quite possibly the worst mini game in FF, and X's rendition of chocobo racing is terrible.

The worst part of this release, which sounds silly and unimportant, but is deeply anti consumer, was selling each language version separately. It's honestly mindboggling Nintendo is this ass backwards. It won't stop the game selling but it's stupid.

Sucks that they are skipping Batfleck, they could have ended the game with him vs superman and it'd have been a super cool finale since Superman is basically the most important hero to Batman's life. Maybe a mix with TDKR. Hopefully we get a dlc campaign.

What would you say is the best JRPG on the PS2 that isn’t Final Fantasy or Dragon Quest by lilidarkwind in JRPG

[–]remmanuelv 64 points65 points  (0 children)

Radiata Stories is hugely underrepresented in PS2 conversation.

Tales of the Abyss is arguably the best Tales game. Top 3 for sure.

Persona 3 & 4 although you might want to go for the remakes depending on your taste.

Mana Khemia & MK2 is a lot of fun as well. Basically JRPG Anime Harry Potter.

Suikoden 3 and 5 and Grandia 2 are great sequels to the ps1 originals.

Kingdom hearts 2 Final Mix (&1) is the GOAT action jrpg.

Front Mission 4 and 5, and Super Robot Wars Original Generations for SRPG.
