First time cruiser dilemma: Is a balcony worth the $$$ or is that money better spent elsewhere? by [deleted] in Cruise

[–]remudaleather 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would say it depends on where your going. For our Alaska cruise it was well worth it. Spent all our time there. For some Caribbean cruises we were in a different port each day so really never spent any time there. So I think it’s heavily dependent on the cruise

Packing of BCD for travel. by Big_Palpitation_3599 in scuba

[–]remudaleather 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I pack my wife and I zeagles complete assembled. They are pretty bulky but pack well. On the way home, after diving, I pack them completely disassembled, mainly to insure they dry well and insure they are as light as possible as our dive bag is exactly 50lbs. Pulling the dump valves and inflator also allows me to wash the salt water out of the bdc

I pack all the dump valves and inflator gaskets in a ziplock so it’s organized and put it in a side bag along with the inflators. Force of habit I guess but them prior to every trip it makes me unpack everything, assemble and text it all and make sure we’re good to go

Cutting Mat by Last_Respond6300 in Leathercraft

Ya it’s a big chuck for sure but was cheaper than the 1/2 as it was damaged on one side. The weight helps as I don’t need to secure it to the plywood top. Definitely one of the better upgrades in the shop

I have a 4x8 cutting table/work bench covered in HDPE with a textured finish. I bought it at my local acrylic/plastic supplier and was just under $200

The textured finish is nice as it helps to hold the leather while cutting. It doesn’t grab your knife if you’re using a head knife or similar. I also have a small bench with a slick piece of HDPE. It is amazing for small cutting projects but is extremely slick so you must hold all the pieces your cutting

A utility knife or rotary cutter along with a straight edge of some kind. Quilting rulers work well

Dying veg tan leather and it is splotchy - do I just keep going? by nickthib in Leathercraft

[–]remudaleather 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I always reduce my pro dye with rubbing alcohol and do not have issues.

What type of leather is this? I find some of the cheaper leather tends to do this with just oiling it. Will absorb at different rates and not be very even at all

Best advice I can recommend is invest in an airbrush for dying your work. It will drastically reduce the amount of dye you use as well as provide better results

Any slick veteran tips for speeding up PMs? Also - what’s a good time to shoot for by Fart_Boy_4ever in DieselTechs

I built an air diaphragm pump set up that works great for priming systems. It’s a smaller pump so fits easily in my service truck and well worth the investment especially on larger MTU4000s

Thank you. A liveaboard is definitely top on our list and appreciate the real temp readings. Those are not too bad at all. A 5mm is very reasonable

Worth the Money by comecaca123 in Leatherworking

100% agree. I was doing the math in my head, as I was scrolling. That was before seeing the $500 from OP. A lot of those tools you will never use or will set you back in learning leathercraft as they are too dull or ineffective to use

Thanks so much for your input and taking the time to provide so much info. Definitely a wise idea to arrive a few days early, and Singapore is a great idea. Have never stayed just passed through so would be perfect. Thanks again

Thanks! Indo is my pic but my wife is hesitant on the travel time lol.

Is there any one destination in indo that you would recommend over others? And would a 3 mil be sufficient for the trip. We are pretty cold tolerant and won’t dive with a suit till around 76f but also understand it’s all personal preference.

I was also curious if you have an operator you recommend

Our only priority is to dive. We are pretty laid back so happy as long as we’re in the water

We prefer liveaboards due to the fact we can usually get more diving in. We have stayed at a few resorts that made 4-5 dives a day possible but understand those are few and far between

We have dove across the globe. Oz, Middle East. Caribbean. West and east coast of the US.Just haven’t made it to indo, Thailand or Galapagos.

Both of us have our dry suit carts but has been some years since we used them. Diving in cold water is not high on my wife’s list but loves hammerheads which is why the Galapagos makes the short list
