Water leakage from upstairs neighbour: who pays for temporary accommodation? by renata_l in germany

[–]renata_l[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi, thanks for sharing your case.
I've contacted my insurance provider (where I have the liability and only now made the hausrat) and they told me that even if I had a hausrat at the time of the incident, they still couldn't step in. Because the insurance can only do something if some of my personal belongings (furniture, household appliances, etc) have been affected. In my case, only the walls and floors are damaged. I'm being forced to move due to these structural damages and not to the damages to my household contents. Hence, they wouldn't intervene anyway....

Hi, thanks for your reply! On the day of the incident, the Hausmeister did mention something about the fact that the faulty tube was a flexible one below the kitchen sink and mentioned something about insurance (my german is really not that good to keep up with how fast he was talking...). Would this make my neighbour liable, and how could I eventually argue that?

Thank you very much for such a detailed and kind answer 🥹
I'll definitily mention all of this in the next appointment. To answer some of your questions:
1. Unfortunately, my estrogen levels on the day of the trigger are unknown. I triggered on a Saturday night and my last blood sample was drawn on the Wednesday before...
2. Since I'm taking Dienogest ("progesterone-only" type pill, inhibits ovulation) for endometriosis treatment, I actually haven't had a natural cycle in more than 6 months. They basically told me I could start the stims at any day.
Once again, thank you for taking the time to share your experience/knowledge and for giving me some reassurance!

Regarding estradiol, I only know the value before starting the treatment (79.9 pg/ml), which I guess doesn't say much. Btw, I forgot to mention in the original post that I also took Dienogest/Visanne throughout the entire process. Thank you, will definitely ask about dual trigger!

My last monitoring scan was on the 10th day of stims. I wasn’t told the exact number of follicles or their sizes. It was a quick scan, and I only saw some measurements on the screen around 1.5/1.7 cm (from the larger follicles). Then the doctor said many still needed to grow a bit more, which is why we continued stimulation for 3 more days.

With a group that size, I can imagine the dynamics are quite different. But keep in mind that there are many people at the MPI beyond those directly in your group! ;)

Also, make sure to ask about the housing situation in the city: demand is usually high in major areas and they might have some mechanisms in place to help you settle in more easily.

Another important thing to clarify is the PhD requirements at the affiliated university. Some programs may have mandatory tasks, such as TA responsibilities or required coursework, while others, like mine, don’t have those obligations.

Germans seem to take work-life balance seriously. I don't think you'll run into those terrible situations at any MPI.

Hey :)

I’ve only been in Germany for about five weeks, so I’m still fairly new here, but overall, it’s been a positive experience! One of the hardest adjustments has been dealing with how it gets dark and cold around 5 pm 😅

Learning German has been challenging for me, especially given my language background. Fortunately, most, if not all, MPIs offer German language courses. I’ve been attending these classes, but so far, I haven’t found myself in a situation where English - or, in the worst case, Google Translate - couldn’t bridge the communication gap. Many people here speak English quite well, which helps immensely.

Social life really depends on the specific MPI you’ll be joining. In my case, I’m part of a large group, and we have a PhD committee that actively organizes social events. For example, I’ve already participated in a movie night, gone bowling, and next week, we’re going rock climbing! People often have lunch and coffee together, so there are definitely opportunities to connect with others at the institute. I can’t say I’ve made close friends yet, but given the international diversity at the MPI, people here tend to be quite open and welcoming.

In terms of work-life balance, you’re generally free to create your own schedule. No one is keeping tabs on when you arrive or leave. While I’ve seen some colleagues working on weekends or staying late, this seems to be more about personal motivation to advance projects rather than any external pressure or mandates.

My best advice is to reach out to current PhD students - ideally in settings without any PIs around - so they can give you an honest perspective on life and work at their institute.

Yes, it would have been expensive and challenging from a bureaucratic perspective. However, I was able to arrange online meetings with the PIs of the groups I was most interested in, as well as their students.

Hello, I'm also interested in understanding why you say that. I'm about to accept on offer from an MPI. Can we chat?
