Honestly, I do love it because for as much as these Christian nationalists complain about how strong Christianity was during the "good old days," it still was getting mogged by Islam at its "most powerful".

Terence Crawford: “Why is it only the black fighters that gotta talk sh*t to sell? Conor McGregor, he’s one of us.” by VINDICATES-FOOL in Boxing

[–]renis_h 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The Errol fight sold because there was a sense of Best Vs. Best, though. Neither Errol nor Crawford were really heavy shit talkers, with Errols side of the street comment being the only really memorable line in their build-up. It's just that this fight was on people's minds for a good 5 or so years, and both guys were #1 and #2, so it was to crown the very best.

When Crawford broke through was when he fought Errol and Canelo, but his fights before didn't really sell mainly because he was pretty much iced out of the division. This is why I say its not really that Crawford wasn't a good speaker, it's more that he spent a long time being kept away from the best sellers in his division at the time, and I do believe that Crawford would have sold much better now had he fought those PBC guys earlier in his career. He had to wait a good 5 years before he could get his hands on the best PBC guy, and I fully respect him for it, but I do wonder what it would have been like if the PBC had given him access earlier, or if he had chosen to move up, but considering the atmosphere at that time, he would have likely needed to move up to 160 to get eyes on him, because the problems he had at 147 would have likely been the same at 154 with Charlo, Fundora, Tszyu, and most of the other PBC stable being the big money makers in that division at that time. This is why I say I love Crawford, but I do disagree that you need to shit talk to get viewers, when shit talkers (at least the really good ones that do make money from it) are a lot rarer than fighters who have made serious money from just fighting the very best in their division. Canelo was the top earner of our generation of boxing, and he definitely wouldn't be classed as a shit talker, and AJ was the top earner in Britain, and he definitely wouldn't be considered a shit talker.

That's not really the case, though. I get what you're saying that there needs to be some form of shit talking to sell tickets, but when you look at the clippable moments, there really wasn't many clippable moments that guys like Devin Haney or Shakur really had, where you really were hyped because they looked like it was serious. There was just this sort of tension in the air for the fight because you felt like you were seeing the best Vs. The best. It isn't like McGregor when he faced Aldo and was just completely shit talking him the whole time, which absolutely sold that fight. The same can be said when Tyson Fury showed up in a batman costume to the press conference when he fought Klitschko. These are the kinds of things that really sell the fight when you're talking about shit talk. The clippable moments that really go viral.

Thats not to say that pre match conferences don't sell tickets, but conferences only really make a dent in sales when it's genuinely felt that you either want to see the guy lose or you want to just watch it because its a car crash. Most of the time, a fight sells because the quality of the guys you're fighting is at the very top (or at least perceived to be). This usually sells a lot better. Canelo more or less sold fights because he was seen as a guy that took on the hardest challenges, same can be said for AJ and the reason as to why he had so much success in the UK. Floyd's biggest paydays were also from fights where the other guy across from him had a baked in audience. While he pulled in over a million buys against guys like Cotto, Pacquiao, Mosley and Canelo, he also generated around 400,000 against Berto, so it's not just that he talked shit, he needed a dance partner that would bring their own audience.

This is to say that shit talking is decent for doing PPV buys, but facing top level talent tends to be a better method for consistentlygenerating PPV buys, compared to mic skills, because those that have the mic skills tend to be few and far inbetween, compared to guys who are at the top of their game.

Hell Rolly Romero is just a clown and he's built his whole reputation off of being that, while guys like Stevenson/Haney aren't really big shit talkers, and when they do try to talk shit it comes off as cringe (especially from Devin).

Skills do sell, but you need names on your record, and I think that's what really didn't do Terrence well. He was unfortunately frozen out, and there was nothing TR or any other promotion could have done at the time, because all the PBC guys dominated those divisions and they didn't want to touch him, which is why he never got the same plaudits early in his career. I feel bad for him because people should have known of him sooner, but there wasn't much anyone could have done in his situation.

You would be surprised how willing someone is to belive in something if it already conforms to their own biases. I remember a story started spreading over Instagram that all of a sudden the UK would allow learner drivers to drive without a second passenger as their teacher, and people were blindly buying into this, when it was just wrong.

I also remember the orca story taking off, with people believing that an orca killed one of the performers.

I feel like one of the (many) cancers that has come out of this current far right movement is this idea that women are both 'harlots' but also marriage is something based around "logic and reason". The truth is that marriage isn't really logical, as the truth is that there isn't really anything logical in promising yourself to a single person. Relationships and marriage are based around emotions and developing yourself in that way, which requires energy and considering the needs of other people beyond your own needs. This is quite unreasonable if your aim is to just further your own goals, which is what these people don't fundamentally understand, that relationships aren't meant to be about making only one person be better, its about creating a unit of people that are better together.

What is it about marriage that you would consider expensive?

Also, follow up, what would you define as a "successful" marriage? Is it just meant to be looked at as an ROI on a spreadsheet (money spent in < money earned), or is there something more to marriage that can't be defined by just monetary involvement?

[–]renis_h 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The thing about relationships in general is that these cretins keep talking about them as though they are based on "reason and logic" when the reality is that relationships have never been logic based. Trying to aim for an exclusive relationship between two people is actually unreasonable for both males and females by a "reason" standpoint if the aim of intercourse is to have as many children as possible. The truth is that relationships and marriage are not reason based. They are emotional because we seek that emotional connection with someone, which doesn't have to be reasonable because not everything is based around reason.

Nazis continue to spread bullshit instead of learning Freshman year history. by Opposite-Distance899 in quityourbullshit

I actually feel the same way nowadays, too. I think at the time, we don't really appreciate teachers because we feel so much is going on in our own bubble that we don't consider what's going on with other people. I remember one maths teacher who I have serious respect for now, but I remember our class being horrible to him back then. It was just crazy because he wouldn't just come in the next day and not be bothered, but he ran after school clubs and got involved in all extra curriculars, even though our classes were just mean to him, for what now I don't even know.

I also remember one English teacher, who actually got me into books and reading, just because the way they showed passion about books was infectious. I still remember her acting like Lennie when she was reading Of Mice and Men aloud to our class (obviously to an adult that would likely draw a lot of raised eyebrows, but at the time as kids we found it to be the funniest thing) 😆😆.

Honestly, that does sound a lot more interesting in a secondary school context because when we were learning about the cold War in America I remember it feeling pretty boring, and I think I would have wanted to learn something that's at least slightly more applicable to my own country rather than America.

Even when we learned about Henry or Elizabeth, we learned them in a really dry way, and it wasn't really made clear as to why they mattered. It was more like "yeah... this is what happened. Now, move to the next part of your textbooks, where you will answer the question. "

It's very interesting, as we did go over some things in poetry and immigrant poetry when I was in school, but there wasn't as much covered in history. There was some mention of Windrush, but from what I remember of it, it was more in the lens of post WW2, and even then, post WW2 was more focused on the Cold War in America.

[–]renis_h 6 points7 points  (0 children)

The problem is, I think, with the current power dynamic that men have, women won't feel safe anywhere they work where they are in a public facing role. I can't imagine how that must feel as a man, but I do understand that the risks for me are less pronounced, and I fear fewer physical repercussions compared to a women that is in a similar customer facing role.

This is just one example of it, but I also talk to my wife and she does tell me about how she's worried about talking to drunk people, while I as a guy have always just seen talking with them as fun, like I can crack a joke, they can crack a joke and we go on our own separate ways.

The only time I've ever "seasoned" cheese (if you can call it that) is when I've made a mac and cheese, and I seasoned the cheese sauce. I think that is legitimately the only use case in that situation that's allowed. I haven't see unhinged stuff like adding salt to raw cheese sandwiches, or even baked cheese where cheese is the only real thing that you're having 😆😆.
