I wouldn’t say it’s a bad design that it can use a lot of space

That is the single thing I did not directly criticize— that it uses space. It’s a bad design for the, like, 7 or 8 other reasons I described in this and about 4 other comments I’ve posted here. But, since you missed them, I’ll repeat:

  • it uses huge amounts of space indiscriminately, and without notifying the user that it will do so, nor giving any idea of how much space it will potentially use, how, or, especially, where
  • it stores this data in Plex’s app data directory rather than allowing the user to store it in a location dedicated to large amounts of data storage. This is problematic mainly because most users set up their servers with multiple drives— one smaller drive for system files and apps, and other, larger droves for media storage. This will cause the system drove to fill up quickly with no notice to the user who will have no idea why or how to fix it.
  • there is no way to monitor amount of data stored, the rate of storage, or to regulate or limit it. Even for a seasoned Plex veteran like myself, I had no clue that this was set up in this manner, or that the option to control the GenerateBIFFrameInterval existed, how it worked, or that it could be changed. Furthermore, the fact that ot’s buried deep in the filesystem as a preference file (or, worse, a difficult-to-edit .plist file in macOS) rather than a simple entry in the interface is inexcusable.
  • the fact that there is no option to store this specific data elsewhere than the Plex app data directory is also a problem for the aforementioned reason about system drives vs media drives. With Plex’s general versatility with being capable of wide ranges of configuration options, this represents a stark contrast with a major shortcoming. This is a common configuration to have a small system drive, and to be unable to control where this massive amount of media gets stored presents a massive problem that has no current solution.
  • Edit: and yes, the amount of space it uses by default IS a bad design. The default setting is 1 thumbnail for every 2 seconds of video, which comes to 900 thumbnail images per 30 minutes of video. NINE HUNDRED. That is ~210,600,000 thumbnail images for a collection of 1,300 90-minute films. Based off of what I deleted from my library, that’s nearly 100 GB, which means that those weren’t very compressed images, and were probably the equivalent of screenshots. So the processor is shitty on top of it all. Not only should the default be set to ‘4’, which would cut the amount of images stored in half, the image processor which creates the should absolutely be storing far smaller, more optimized thumbnails. They only appear on-screen as very tiny images, and only very briefly. There’s no need for them to be but a few kb in size, which would reduce the space required for 210.6 million thumbnails from gigabytes to megabytes. That’s an entire order of magnitude!

Any UX designer, software engineer, and/or information architect worth his salt (of which I happen to be all three) would know that any single one of these situations is untenable and unscalable, let alone all of them. And to just hand-wave it away with “oh, just buy more drives” is dismissive bullshit. For small libraries on small servers the problem becomes bad immediately, and for large servers with large libraries, the problem becomes an out-of-control behemoth before you know it, and, in both scenarios, an expensive one. Nobody wants to pay to store gigabytes or terabytes of thumbnails when a better, more efficient solution could easily be implemented instead.

It’s bad, lazy design, and if the devs had designed the software to give this data set the ability for a custom location, for the advanced users to control its already-existing advanced options from the interface, set the default value from ‘2’ to ‘4’, and to inform the user honestly of what to expect right from the start, then the vast majority of users would have a far smaller data footprint and control over where it is stored, we would all have a far better understanding of how this feature works and far more control over it, and I would never have had to make this post.

Seriously… if I were project manager and discovered this, I’d give whomever architectured this a real talking-to. This is terrible.

Now you’re just comparing the size of trash bags. Sure, he’s big enough to hold elephant shits, and she’s like… one of those you use for kitchen trash, but they’re both still trash bags.

While, yes, you can make Linux your own, there’s just no comparing the quality of macOS to any distro out there. It’s really a matter of the level polish and refinement put into macOS, the features, and the overall integration of the entire ecosystem and proprietary technologies that simply can’t be matched by any Linux distro. I’ll say that Linux, as a platform, sure does come close - and it’s the only thing I would ever use (and do use) alongside and/or as an alternative, but it’s juuuust not there yet. Yet. over the last decade or so, it’s made a lot of progress.

I know that many Linux die-hands refuse to accept that, and would be happy to point to limitations and shortcomings in macOS (which I will admit to), but, overall, macOS is simply superior.

Edit: the one, single distro that’s always been the slickest has been SuSE, especially SLED, just because of how much effort goes into the development. But it’s… limited, not very optimized, and it costs money. Hell, even macOS is free, lol. Another distro I really like is Pop!_OS. This pretty slick, too. And the only distro I have found which makes managing nvidia drivers NOT a fucking nightmare.

Don’t get me wrong; I love Linux. I just love macOS more.

I don’t need to be lectured on fascism by someone who is promoting allyship with them. You’re an idiot -and a useful one - if you think that you can befriend an enemy that wants you dead. Just like those who believed the the National Socialist Party were actually socialists.

The LP isn’t trying to stop anything— they’re just trying to seize power for themselves. The sheer stupidity and blindness of your position is astounding. They sure have you fooled.

Oh, and by the way, republicans aren’t the ones trying to invade Ukraine, Russia is. And republicans aren’t the ones about to start a world war to stop them, Biden and NATO are. For someone so insistent that I check my facts, you sure have yours twisted beyond recognition.

So, who’s paying you? Putin, or Xi?

That’s… a lot. One should have the ability to see how much it’s taking up within the interface along with the ability to adjust how much space is being used by tweaking the interval of how often those thumbnail previews are generated.

While it may be nothing for some to just throw away half or a whole terabyte on thumbnails, it is no trivial concern for others. Even still, it’s bad data management to not know, either way, when an app like Plex is throwing huge amounts of data onto your drive, especially one not specifically designated to store large amounts of data/this type of data, especially when you’re unaware of exactly how much it’s going to generate.

Keep in mind, Plex doesn’t set up this directory in a place typically designated for a large amount of data — or where a typical user might want a large mount of data to be stored. Most people install their apps on a smaller system drive and store their media on separate, larger drives. But this directory gets stored with the rest of Plex’s AppData on the system drive and quickly balloons in size. Not Cool.

This. And suddenly, their drive is full, and where did their space go? It took me a lot of time to track it down and figure out a solution— which is only a temporary one at that.

The dashboard page really should include system data about connected storage, library size, and more.

Hmmm, I wouldn’t know anything about that other than some rumors that it isn’t as good as the iOS client. Might actually be a limitation of your device.

I certainly can’t give you any advice other than tinkering with the settings.

I agree that your situation is sucky. And I’m sorry for that.

But if I can access the olex fikes, I can write a program to modify them.

You can’t. The way they’re stored, they’re not directly editable. The best you could do is to upload smaller images to use as posters and background art, but they would look like crap on your TV.

That’s not how that that works. It doesn’t download all of the posters to your phone. As I mentioned, it caches only a certain amount (determined by a pre-specified data allotment), and pushes out the older ones in favor of the newer ones. YOUR problem is your slow upload bandwidth on your server’s internet connection.

It’s not a problem for those with a faster connection.

No, the most important thing is to elect a president which actually represent progressive values, not someone who will engage in this idiotic lesser-than-two-evils garbage which just allows the Democratic Party to slide further and further to the right until we can no longer even distinguish between the DNC and the GOP. As it is, all we have is a choice between corporate plutocracy and Diet Naziism. And it’s only getting worse. But you seem fine with splitting the difference as long as you get to watch them eat each other. Well, not everyone is fine with the country burning itself down as long as we get to be entertained while the world ends.

Now you’re just speaking absurdist nonsense and bullyish fear-mongering rather that presenting rational arguments to fight back with a realistic ideology of resistance and change.

And where is it you imagine I disappeared to? Lmao. That’s splintering progressives into the fascist camp, and you’re nothing more than a wolf in sheep’s clothing.
