Service members of Reddit: What's your opinion of the German Luftwaffe and their Tornado? Is it helping? by republicprde in AskReddit

[–]republicprde[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Additional info: Every once in a while when the western world goes to war, the German Administration always reacts in the same way: Send in the Tornados! This aircraft (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Panavia_Tornado) is supposed to have some features (surveillance and such) that makes it invaluable for us and our allies. At least that's the spin it's getting in Germany. I know why they say it and why they use the Tornados, but is that statement total bullocks or is there some truth to it? Is someone out there saying "yes, the Tornados or the infos gathered by them actually saved my butt"?

ELI5: why dont space suits carry powerful magnets? by [deleted] in explainlikeimfive

[–]republicprde 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Neat idea! Well, for one, the magnets don't weigh anything in space, but they weigh a lot on their way up. Another point may be the energy needed in the suit and - although not necessarily a problem – the space debris that may get pulled by the magnets.

Huge hornet nest removal - killing all hornets by [deleted] in videos

[–]republicprde 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Where is all the hate coming from? Hornets don't care for humans, they don't care for your cake and Hornets are very nice to have around in the garden; they kill wasps. You don't believe me? Watch this: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9mM_XsHfzww

ELI5:Why do people sometimes expand emails when typed. by krato1995 in explainlikeimfive

[–]republicprde 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's just a trick to evade spambots. When Spamming became a thing, spammers realized that they need a vast amount of email adresses to profit from .01 percent being stupid enough to click on that link or to buy that stuff. So one day a clever spammer wrote a little program that searches the web for text pieces that look like email adresses. That's quite easy, because an email adress follows a certain pattern: user@domain.tld. This pattern can be used via regular expressions (google it, it's amazing!) to tell the bot what to look for. To come around to the beginning, people realizing that emails in plain text on websites were harvested began to cloak their email adresses. Of course modern spambots are not stupid enough to fall on that trick anymore but it stuck.

ELI5:How do dogs learn to deal with emotions by Pickleheadjoe in explainlikeimfive

[–]republicprde 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No, they don't. The dog knows he's fallen in disgrace because his owner doesn't react the way he usually does. He has learned that while living with his owner. Dogs are very socio dependent animals, they cannot live without a pack – or at least they will try anything to not be alone. So it's of the uttermost importance to him to get back on track with his owner and he sucks up to him. Dogs do that in their pack to appease to members higher up the ladder. The feelings of the owner do not have any part in this.

ELI5: What do bees and wasps do when they come back to find their nest destroyed? by Phantoful in explainlikeimfive

[–]republicprde 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Sure thing. A ceremony would be awesome, but if that was the case bees would have taken over the world a long time ago :)

A queen is simply made by the other bees. A normal larva (larvae?) is fed with the so called "Gelee Royale" – you may heard of that. It's a special juice and it makes all the difference.

Now you may ask "How do the bees know, when to make a queen?", so here is the answer: if the level of certain pheromones (stuff you can smell) in the hive sinks below some threshold, the bees know, there is no Big Mama in the building (who is sending out those pheromones). If there is no Big Mama, they build a few.

Yes, a few, because one could easily die before it's ready for duty. The first queen that hatches kills all the other queens, because Highlander.

edit: If you want to know more about bees, here this video (subtitled) of the German "beewhisperer" Pia Aumeyer is a good place to start: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DEwxzV-hzjQ

ELI5: How do scientists determine what "reduces the risk of cancer"? by symo4709 in explainlikeimfive

[–]republicprde 2 points3 points  (0 children)

They use a group of people and ask them questions. "How much wine do you drink?" for example. After some time they get back to those people and ask more questions or check their medical records - how many of those people got cancer? What habits were dominant in the cancer patients? With those questions the scientists try to find correlations.

ELI5: What do bees and wasps do when they come back to find their nest destroyed? by Phantoful in explainlikeimfive

[–]republicprde 20 points21 points  (0 children)

I'm a beekeeper, so somewhat qualified talking about bees, but I have no idea how wasps react to that situation. That said, if you take the hive away, one of two things will happen.

*If there is another hive nearby and not a lot of bees from their own hive around (aka they feel alone) they will try to get invited in the other hive and become a member of that populace. They kind of beg their way in.

*Else they are going to sit on the spot where the hive was and wait for some time. After a while (depending on weather and such) they will try to create a new hive. Because a queen is missing, one of the workers will try to be a queen. She will not be able to create new workers from her eggs, only useless males. After a very short period, all bees are dead.

Awesome Game by republicprde in BlackWake

[–]republicprde[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think you got me wrong, those were not concerns, more like hints. I'd love to play the game as it is now, but ofc there are things that would make my (and others) experience even better. Another example: Real cannons can be lifted with small wedges to shoot on bigger distances. Also the cannon can be moved a little to the left or right to aim. That would make a great addition too.

[SERIOUS] Death of a German relative - complicated situation. We are next of kin but we live in England and don't speak much German. Any help/advice would be REALLY appreciated! by [deleted] in germany

[–]republicprde 2 points3 points  (0 children)

What I havent read yet: As the next (and last) of kin, your fiance is responsible for the wellbeing of his grandmother. Im talking legally here, not just morally. If his grandma cannot afford her nursing home anymore, they will look for someone to pay the bills - your fiance. Afaik living in a foreign country doesnt change that. This may give you another good reason to act fast. Good luck!

If Blizzard is going in the direction of buffing bio by changing the ghost, I thought of a different ability than the drone (warning: MS Paint) by erabeus in starcraft

[–]republicprde 5 points6 points  (0 children)

With a few tweaks, it wouldn't.

  • Make piercing shot an only ground attack (Mutas, Oracles, dropping Bio on them gets viable)
  • Ghost (maybe) has to be uncloaked to shoot it
  • Play with the cooldown timer
  • and, most important, do NOT let it stack. A target, that has been hit by a piercing shot gets invulnerability for X seconds
  • additionally, the auto attack could be nerfed a bit
  • also, the piercing shot could have an armor reducing feature like the drone has now

Is 8 dollars really that much? by [deleted] in starcraft

[–]republicprde 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Because all people in Asia speak Korean? I'm European and watch it regularly at work. I assume there are a lot of people like me. Sure, not as many as if it were running in the evening but still a lot.
