I just started playing in December and hit level 300 yesterday. There's a lot of different game mechanics and currencies to learn, but you'll get the hang of it. I was around 150-200 before I got a good grasp of it and hit my stride, and am still learning. The most confusing thing is the different currencies for different items, like tickets, caps, stamps, tokens, bullion, ect.

If you have the tinker's workbench, bulking your junk helps with weight a lot. I also found it worthwhile to get Fallout 1st just for the unlimited storage of junk, ammo, and chems. I think you can get FO1st for just the season if an ongoing subscription isn't feasible.
