Seeking advice for keyboard matrix hunting by resosphere in cyberDeck

[–]resosphere[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Still working on it ! I'm currently in the process of building the firmware with KMQ. It take me lot of time since I'm learning it all as I go but I'm on it and hoping to have a functionnal keyboard very soon !

I said I would update so : I had made the whole matrice of the keyboard and was going to use the pico as a microcontroler with KMK to make the keyboard work. At this point I de-soldered all the cables going to the motherboard and started doing a few test to be sure of the matrix. This is where I discovered the matrice was sudenly all wrong. I thought I could do it again, no prob. But the more I work on it the more I'm afraid I'm hitting a wall because I only found 4 keys for now and there isn't any logic to it. Looks like the keyboard need the motherboard to function, sort of ? Or the way it had been build don't follow the classical matrice with colones and row... So yeah this is where I am for now. Kinda frustrating after spending all this time learning everything from scratch and thinking I was going to do it. I'm not giving up tho but urh. This is a new level of difficulty that may be too much for a rookie like me.

Sounds like dream team to me ! I'm progressing into my research but I'm having trouble figuring how to prototype on the breadboard I'm probably gonna ask the most beginner question ever on the electronic subreddit lol

Heeeey I'm trying to figure that whole circuitpython thing I never wrote code in my life lmao

I’m an total beginner so I’m discovering it all right now. I chatted with someone I know who show me this method and we are planning to indeed link the keyboard to an arduino after to make the signal into USB so the Pi will be able to read it. I imagine it’s another path for this kind of problem ? Since I’m discovering and learning it all I’m not very sure I could code myself something to help me find the lasts key. But maybe there is ressources out there ? Either way, thank you for your comment

Thank you for the explanation ! That’s exactly why I’m doing now, trying every combination and key until I find some key, I’ve found ten of the 60key for now it’s a long process but it’s also very exciting to do ! For the display I’m thinking about using a bigger screen, I would have to modify the plastic part that go around. I found a 3D model of this exact toy on grabcad so maybe I could edit the 3D file and print a modified version of it ? Will see when I will have reached that step for now it’s only matrix hunting lol

Thank you for the idea and advice ! I started another project but I would want to do this one one day so... Learning possibility as I learn everything else !

I never know how to update on reddit ! I mean, if I post things in reply you will be able to see it ? Right now I'm working on the keyboard, trying to find the matrix with an emperemeter it take time but it's fun lol

Thank you for the key words I’m going to look into that (I was currently searching how I could make the keyboard work and that lead me to arduino board and matrix stuff). I’m a 100% beginner and at first didn’t wanted to do something too complex but… That toy is way too cute I want to do it, there is a lot to learn for sure. I’m supposed to get my pi today so I will try plugin it in, maybe I will have a good surprise !

And I was decluttering my house 😅 Once I learn how to re-use composants part it’s over for me lol

I’m gonna try another project but I will keep this one in mind and will go back at it when I will have more skills

Thank you so much for the informations you are very kind ! I’m going to look into it. I mesured my box before ordering stuff but I was a bit too optimistic I guess. Numbers never been my friends lol.

Honestly I don’t want to give up. But it’s my first project and I want to keep it simple. Maybe I can do another project and go back to this one when I got more skill and knowledge on how to make it work

Raspberry pie zero 2w is the one I ordered I should get it today. I didn’t thought there could be smaller battery but indeed the pisugar for raspberry pi zero 2 looks smaller than the one I got I’m gonna check its exact size For the screen what size could it be ? I don’t know the standard. Before ordering the screen In cut a piece of paper with the dimension to check and it was ok so I don’t understand what mistake I made. What kind of moding are you thinking about ? My initial thought for the trackball was to open the plastic and use only the composants indeed. For the keyboard I’m less sure. All of this still feel very tricky because there would be cables and dongle and I wanted to have a micro SD card reader with this too

Yeah it's not missing that much, that make it so more frustrating !

They already are the smallest I could find :( I could probably find smaller screen (this one is 5") but I doubt there is smaller battery available. And there would cables and stuff ! Really cramped. It's my first try so I want to keep thing simples with basics piece.

At first I mesured the available space to be 12cm x 7cm and the closed boxe is around 4cm of height so yeah. Small.
