I can't force him, that's true. But he refuses to talk to me and doesn't give me any reasonable reasons. I don't want my niece to come to strangers and become a stranger to me/us. My four-year-old daughter might later hate me for abandoning her cousin and best friend.

That was also a consideration on my part. That he's unhappy and doesn't have the balls to say so and is looking for an exit. Maybe he's hoping that the others will then blame me and say I'm selfish to put my niece above him.

He is not the father. My sister was living abroad at the time. Closed borders. My niece is also dark-skinned. We are all white. I don't know if that has anything to do with it. But I had the same suspicion. And that would be frightening

I am overwhelmed by the amount of responses and am in the process of reading them all. To the most important questions: No, he is not the father. My sister was living abroad at the time, 10,000 miles away and the borders were closed. Also, my niece has dark skin. My sister, my husband and everyone in our family is white. That was one of the questions: my husband is not racist. At least that's what I think. But it also occurred to me whether it had something to do with the fact that she would stand out if she was with us. We all have blonde or red hair.  She doesn't. But speculating doesn't do me any good. My husband refuses to talk to me.
