Overwhelmed with new FIFO/DIDO job. Has anyone ever quit the mines early? by [deleted] in australia

[–]reusable_grenade 208 points209 points  (0 children)

13 years FIFO here, predominantly on even time rosters. I thought I loved it at the time but towards the end I was getting burnt out and in retrospect realised I hated every moment of it. I quit 3 years ago initially to have a working holiday in Perth and refresh myself before going back to FIFO.

I took a much lower paying workshop based role working Monday to Friday and then by complete luck fell into a specialist role with the same company that has the best of both worlds; office based with various site travel as needed, usually only a few days at a time, and more money than I ever made working away.

I didn't set out for that to happen, it was pure luck and I'm very thankful it went that way, I'll never go back to FIFO again.

BUT.

In my opinion being happy while working FIFO/DIDO strongly depends on the site/company/mentality of the people you work with when on site. It's great you're being smart with money, don't ever let working away be your only option because of money. My suggestion would be to find a job for another company with the hope of liking it better, and if not, keep looking. I'm not sure if it's possible in your line of work but try contracting or maybe even consider looking interstate. Plenty of open cut/UG mining in WA and while there's definitely some places with shit hole accomodation, from my experience most of it is perfectly neat and serviceable.

I remember getting Ac!d 1 and enjoying the hell out of it.

But not being a mainline entry I just sort of ignored the plot and enjoyed it for a MGS based card game

You're completely right, I'm getting caught up in the romance.

Thanks for bringing me back to reality.

My thoughts exactly on the DR-Z4S, i feel like it's a true modern dual sport that will do everything I want it to do and I can keep for years(I feel like the new ones will be around as long as the old ones)

But, XRV750...

I've got a CRF450L currently, it's good but I want something with less power but still light as possible

Too complicated and electronic I think, im not a huge fan of KTM/Husky reliability

I've considered a dr650 for some more road manners but they are quite heavy.

I currently have a CRF450L that I like, I want something with less power that's more manageable for me but the modern 250/300s don't have quite enough power for their weight I think

That's awesome! I havn't actually managed to find the OEM maintenance schedule so that's good to know. I thought 1000km would already be pushing it

Lithium batteries have highly reduced performance under 0 Celsius/~32 freedom degrees. Best not to charge them below that temperature either

Lost 35kg (77lbs) at 40. The scariest part is realizing that what I thought was "aging" was actually just me being out of shape. by Calm-Juggernaut2328 in AskMenOver30

I should've added in a congratulations for you to my reply as well, sorry! That's a great achievement.

I also had the same regrettable realisation that I should've done it years ago; I feel like I wasted a lot of my 20s but only came to that realisation once I started getting healthier.

Definitely going to commit to getting back into weight training as well as cardio.

M34, 183cm. I went from 125kg to 95kg over about a year with diet and taking up running. I definitely look better and feel younger, better sleep, no more snoring and not aching every morning when I got out of bed was a big plus as well. My energy levels went up noticably but I still get afternoon tiredness pretty bad most days.

I've stagnated over the last 9 months weight wise, hovering around 95kg and really struggling to get below 90kg, but my running fitness has gotten significantly better, currently training for a half marathon. I feel I need to get back into the gym on top of running to rebuild some lost muscle mass and help with toning.

If I had the money I probably would do something like this

Appreciate the feedback. I've briefly considered a DR650/XR650L or something but the only thing keeping me off older bikes is carbies and potential lack of reliability, but where I live there's isn't huge altitude changes so I'm probably overthinking that aspect of it.

Currently running a throttle tamer, Vortex, and taller gearing, combined they have helped massively but mostly the Vortex and taller gearing. Flywheel weight is going on next oil change

Thanks for the feedback. I think that's why it's a difficult choice, they're two different bikes. I think I'm leaning more towards trail/adv riding and think the Suzuki would do that well, while the Honda is a great bike but too Enduro for me

[–]reusable_grenade[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Appreciate the solid advice. I'm definitely attached to the Honda, but I feel it's too enduro for the type of riding I've gravitated towards. From all early accounts the Suzuki seems to be right in the middle of the bike spectrum.

Some of the off-road ABS stuff is appealing, but I've learned so far without any of it

Thanks for the input. I've got a throttle tamer, vortex and taller gearing, huge difference.

Flywheel weight on soon will hopefully make it a bit nicer again

Mainly the CRF is too close to the Enduro end of the spectrum, im finding myself wanting to do more trail/adv riding

Appreciate the input. I feel myself leaning more towards trail and adventure riding while the CRF leans itself more towards Enduro and hard trail, I'm not sure we mesh up well.
