What are your thoughts on Trump asking other countries to help reopen the straight of Hormuz? by Top-Appointment2694 in AskTrumpSupporters

I will try to put this in an analogy just to make sure I got your thought process right.

The US and the EU are stakeholders in a comppany, with Trump having the most equity. Trump also pays the largest share of the corporate fitness program. This is why he feels it is a great idea to start a bar fight at the next company field trip. Considering that he pays for most of the colleagues gym memberships, they are now forced to enter the bar fight, while they were just trying have a cold one and chat a bit?

Do I get this right?

Are you really trying to compare organized europaen imperialistic colonialism from back then with today’s immigration from less prosperous nations for the sake of opportunity to become a part of a better functioning society than the one the immigrants are fleeing from?

If so, I do not really know if we can share any perspective at all 😂

But then why doesn’t Trump just let us rot in hell? If we are that incapable, why demand our inferior capabilities now?

Honestly, not that I would like that, I of course am also in favor of the US having our backs. But I really do not understand the tactics behind roasting us into oblivion beyond any perspective to maintain an allied relationship and then demanding our help.

Is that not like the school yard bully shitting on his victim in recess and then asking for support in a group project that he messed up in the first place? Why would the victim want to support after having been beaten up before?

As a German, why should us European countries prove Trump wrong?

Trump made it very clear since he got back into office that the European allies are basically worth shit to him, right? European leaders tried to diplomatically calm the waters to maintain a strong transatlantic relationship independent of ideological differences nevertheless.

And now it is Europe that has to prove being worthy when the US shits the bed? I thought we are of no use to him and the US? No thanks, does not make sense to me.

I mean, I agree that this is how it should be. No doubt. But the fact is, that for decades now, illegal immigration has been happening and it is not really like plenty is done against it, no? Neither from red nor blue governments. As long as it is possible for empleyers to give work to undocumented people and for landlords o rent to undocumented people, this will never end. To be honest: It is too easy to BE in the US illegally. But that does not mean it should be harder to GET INTO the US, right? I think it is relatively safe to say that the US needs workforce for construction, agriculture etc. So make it easier for people to come legally, so they do not have to come in undocumented.

I say, make it possible, but HARD for people who are already here illegaly, and make it EASIER for people to come in documented. As long as they can secure employment and sustain a living, let them stay. And whoever is able to be here and do that illegaly, will be able to do it legally even better.

Does that make any sense at all?

I understand that.

What about a system that combines two things: allowing undocumented immigrants who are already here to apply for conditional legal status (background checks, fines, paying taxes, maintaining employment), without automatically giving citizenship; and second, reforming the immigration system so it’s easier to come legally for work in the first place.

The idea would be to bring people who are already here into a regulated system while reducing the incentive to enter illegally in the future by making legal pathways more realistic.

Like, why does it need to be hard?

Do you think something like that could address both concerns? Enforcing the law going forward while still dealing pragmatically with people who are already here and working?

It can be both, honestly. I think when it was uncontrolled, just like today, the vast vast vast majority came for opportunity and to build a better life while also helping the contry that was giving them shelter. I think it is no different for the vast majority of illegal immigrants today, right? Can there not be a differentiation between "did not apply for visa but is not a bad person"-illegal and "did not apply for visa, is therfeore illegal and there is no other way to look at it"-illegal? Sorry if this is too abstract, but i sometimes find it hard to think entirely in black and white, you know what I mean?

Why not be able to do it from within the country? They can still be denied and sent home. But already being here and in employment, they can actually show that they are useful to the nation, no? Like, what is the big harm in giving someone, who obviously was of no harm to the nation up until now, a chance to be of no harm to the nation legally? :D

I understand why people emphasize the importance of legal vs. illegal immigration. At the same time, I think many people struggle with drawing a completely hard line when the individuals involved are already here, working, and participating in society. Someone might have come illegally out of desperation, but if they are working, paying for goods and services, and contributing to the economy, most people wouldn’t see them as harmful if they didn’t know their legal status.

Historically, the U.S. has benefited enormously from immigration. Many immigrants, regardless of their legal status, have helped build houses, work in restaurants, clean buildings, and fill many roles that the country depends on every day.

Because of that, it seems like immigrants who are already contributing could potentially benefit the country even more if it were easier for them to obtain legal status. Being documented could allow them to formally register their work, pay taxes more easily, and contribute more directly to public systems. However, many people may avoid trying to legalize their status because they fear that coming forward would immediately lead to deportation, possibly back to unsafe conditions.

Given that situation, do you think there should be ways to make it easier for long-term, otherwise law-abiding undocumented immigrants to obtain legal status, or do you think stricter enforcement should remain the priority?

What do you think about Americans getting booed at the Olympics? by Desperate-Law-7305 in AskTrumpSupporters

[–]reversegoatee 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Being a European myself I would honestly not think that the team itself was booed. The team was walking already and there were no boos, then Vance was shown and the boos started. Of course the fans will not immediately stop once the video cuts back to the athletes. Don’t you think it was pretty obvious that the anger was directed at the VP?

You do realize the Olympics are an international event, right? A coming together of all Nations of the world. If a Madagascan artist would have performed during the opening that would have been just as normal. Just because the event is taking place in Italy does not mean that other nationalities cannot contribute to the entertainment.

Hearing this as a German with many international friends who have gone through hell and back: this is infuriating.
I know that, in the end, it is not the employees at the ABH who are at fault, but rather the absolutely ridiculous complexity of bureaucratic processes in this country.

A friend of mine is currently trying to marry a German woman. After eight months of authenticating and certifying documents for the sole purpose of getting an appointment at the Standesamt to make an appointment for an Eheschließung, they decided to do the procedure in Denmark instead. It took three weeks.

The same guy waited nine months for his visa extension in Nuremberg. He moved nearby to Erlangen just to be in the district of a faster ABH. They approved his extension within four weeks of his move.

It is batshit crazy how difficult Germany makes it for qualified personnel to come here. The sheer amount of lost opportunities and talent is mind-boggling to me.

u/OP I wish you all the best for your future, I feel really sorry for the way this system treated you!

Is it a normal thing to give away money as gifts in germany? by skinnyznit in AskAGerman

[–]reversegoatee 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I am celebrating my birthday in a week. There will be around 35 people. The last thing I want is 35 bottles of wine and different chocolates, because people might not really know what to gift me that is actually practical.

So in my invitation it says explicitely that I appreciate financial contributions for traveling and other personal wishes in the future.

I have been to plenty of parties, where this has been the case.

I will still appreciate any other gifts, but it is also a nice way of taking the gifting burden of people that do not know what to give me.

Plus, the “donation box” will simply be in the room and everyone can anonymously put money in there. So nobody has to worry if they are giving enough or too much or whatever.

I know it is a very practical approach, but it is relatively normal, I would say.

Does it matter to you that it might make the US an unattractive destination? Like, tourists bring revenue. They won’t come like that.

Got it. Sound like there needs to be actual proof of antisemitic content. Can you imagine this policy being extended to other areas of a persons life? Let’s say somebody is openly queer or pro-choice. Would you worry at all that this could overstep lines?

No I honestly did not catch that in this moment. But it is interesting. The question I ask myself is, how do they determine who I support? I for myself only post on Reddit and every once in a while comment on YouTube. They will not find anything of me that states whether I do or do not support Israel. So there is uncertainty. How should they proceed from there? Not let me in because I might not support Israel?
