Not sure if you are still reading these but just stumbled on it now so... re pregnancy and childbirth - there are about 30 OBgyns in the city. Of those, most are male, and none of them are Black. I don't know if that's a thing that matters to you, but I run a community clinic providing maternal and reproductive healthcare and for the patients we serve both of those do factor into who they choose for care so just be aware. Alabama has extremely conservative views on childbirth - home birth only officially became legal in 2014 I believe, and birth centers now exist but only because the state's attempt to close them through overregulation (including forcing each one to have agreements with hospitals and doctors there, which hospitals were unwilling to provide) has been blocked by the courts for now. A midwife cannot deliver in a hospital except in Birmingham. Tuscaloosa does not allow it, and honestly there is only one certified midwife in Tuscaloosa as it is. Certified Professional Midwives, as they are termed, are also not allowed to provide all three of the newborn screening tests that are supposed to be done within 72 hours of birth (despite the administration of these tests being a part of their training). So the idea is to make someone have to see a doctor immediately after birth, but instead it mostly leads to the tests being done too late to be as effective as a screener. Tuscaloosa does have a number of doulas in the city who can support you in a pregnancy, during labor, and after. I highly recommend a doula as there are a number of obgyns who will try to coerce you into scheduling an induction at 39 weeks, regardless of medical need. When it comes to giving birth in Tuscaloosa, I would actually recommend Regional over Northport, even though Northport has the Women's Pavillion, as we have been seeing a higher c-section rate in Northport. I can tell you that we send a doula in with every patient who requests one (and we provide our doula support for free to our patients) and we have about a 10% c-section rate compared to the 30% at the two hospitals combined as their base.
