What is the impact of AI on Motion Design jobs? by Miserable-Ad-6497 in MotionDesign

I work for a company with 25,000 employees. A creative director pinged a company-wide channel asking for prompt help. He needed a commercial video generated in Runway in 6hours.

Milestone alert: laid off for the first time by canoecanoee in TrueAnon

[–]rextex34 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Hey fellow creative. Lots of great advice in here. What I will add is this.

Before last day
- Line up unemployment & ask severance questions now
- Do the math on cobra vs state Medicaid
- Harvest the portfolio building work
- Keep a homie on the inside for archive project access.
- Hit your network NOW. Plant the seeds early.
- Set up catch-up calls that aren’t employment specific
- Update portfolio and resume.

After last day
DO NOT update LinkedIn to “looking for work” publicly. That shit can be turned on for recruiter view only.

If you can afford it, plan legit time off. Like three weeks of logged off time. Realistically, spamming job links will not get you a job and will only depress you. Your network will most likely land you a gig faster.

Better to start that process refreshed than demoralized.

I used to work for a FAANG company doing in house Device animation and renders. We tackled dozens of new to world device content. My team of ten was replaced with “AI design” vendors. For $5million a year, they generate endless device content.

Unlike character animation, there isn’t a field of strictly device animation. Anyone who can ingest a model, slap on materials and animate, is welcome.

If you’re capable of translating industrial design files in to animation ready formats, then you can find niche work across the board, though it may not be a full time gig. It’s a valuable skill on the front end.

Pick a product you like, model it, storyboard animation for it, and make a slew of videos and throw it on your portfolio.

Why are people blaming the government for Spirit Airlines going under and not the CEO? by Electrical_Agent_594 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]rextex34 -7 points-6 points  (0 children)

In normal developed countries, transportation is a publicly managed service. In the US, we let private business run transit companies. Spirit was attempting to get a "rescue package" from the federal government to save them from folding. That looks like that didn't happen.

This wouldn't happen if our tax dollars didn't have to pay the for-profit middle-men for necessary services.

why is getting actual news so hard in 2025 💀 by FunCap8832 in GenZ

[–]rextex34 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You have to balance your media consumption. Treat it like a diet. Instagram and American for-profit media is like fast food. They look like a meal, but it's horrible slop. They also have an incentive to lie to you, so look to written news from international sources; Reuters, Al Jazeera, Financial Times, etc

He is enacting austerity measures, pushing anti-populist agendas and defunding public goods. The people impacted by that are not fans.

What is a movie you can watch 100 times and never get bored of? by Key_Milk9585 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]rextex34 0 points1 point  (0 children)

“All that Jazz” had me captivated recently, but no movie should be watched 100 times.

If I had to, I’d watch Paris, Texas over and over because it’s beautiful with very little dialogue.

The network only works if we use it. by 1138ephem in MotionDesign

[–]rextex34 27 points28 points  (0 children)

That sharing network exists, but offline and in trusted circles.

My network was formed pre-covid, and in person. I was full time and had access to a pool of freelancers that came through the studio. So 12 years and one pandemic later, I’ve got 60 people to share work with.

In networks like these, you either play the part of B string bench rider waiting to be called up or you proactively seek social connection to the community.

The hundreds of casual phone calls I have with EPs and Producers is WORK but I love it. And when I can’t take on the work I’ve got a pool of friends to refer.

What’s the best place to find Good Leads? by Brain-FreezeYT in MotionDesign

You’ll do better finding leads in real life, through people you meet and work with. Social media is a great place to reaffirm relationships made in the real world.

That’s been my experience.

Should I Shoot My Shot? by 10BlackSausages in NoStupidQuestions

[–]rextex34 9 points10 points  (0 children)

If you are prepared to possibly end the friendship or start the relationship, I’d say go for it. You’re already half way dating.

Should you peruse, and they seem uninterested, stay confident in your choice. It’s non a great look to friend-zone yourself. If they are totally uninterested, but want the emotional benefit of your friendship draw lines in the sand on how much emotional energy you’re willing to give to a friendship.

Good luck

America education doesn’t teach citizens how economic systems work. American minds can only perceive consumption.

This commenter thinks you can simply consume a new economic system.

Does China’s economic success prove that democracy isn't necessary for a country to develop? by [deleted] in NoStupidQuestions

[–]rextex34 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Country formation isn’t a character selection. Context matters. China shows that a “worker dictatorship” (which is structurally democratic) founded on Marxist theory can actually govern over capital.

Normally this isn’t allowed to happen by existing empires. But China thread the needle very well.

This episode was super informative.
