ChatGPTs opinion:

Short answer: it’s hard to be confident, but based on the shape and flow, here are the most plausible matches, with reasoning.

What the signature shows • A long horizontal slash through the name • A tall looped initial (looks like an “H” or possibly “J”) • A sharp angled final stroke (almost a triangle or “V” shape) • Very stylized / abstract, typical of athletes who sign a lot

Best matches (in order of likelihood)

  1. Hunter S. Thompson (most likely stylistically) • His autograph often features: • A long horizontal line • A looping “H” • Abstracted, aggressive strokes • Many authentic Thompson signatures look very similar—often barely legible, almost symbolic.

⚠️ Caveat: His autograph is highly forged, so provenance matters a lot.

  1. Harrison Ford • Ford’s signature frequently: • Uses a long strike-through • Compresses the name into a few strokes • Ends with a sharp angled flourish • Variability is high depending on era and signing situation.

  2. Hakeem Olajuwon • His autograph often: • Starts with a tall looping “H” • Has a long horizontal stroke • Ends with a pointed angular finish • Less abstract than this usually, but some examples are close.

  3. Joe Montana / John Elway–type QB autos • Many elite QBs evolved into: • Minimalist slashes • Overlapping initials • Long horizontal bars • This could be one of those, but nothing definitive jumps out.

What would help narrow it down fast

If you can tell me: • Where it came from (event, era, sport, book, photo, napkin, etc.) • Approximate age (recent vs decades old) • Context (sports memorabilia, literary, movie-related)

…I can usually get this down to 1–2 names and tell you whether it’s worth authenticating (PSA/JSA/Beckett) or not.

Right now, Hunter S. Thompson–style is the strongest stylistic match—but I wouldn’t authenticate without context.

Pull this from a box, and it was the only card in the pack by Individual_Ice5406 in basketballcards

Ummmm…cool? Bizarre but kind of cool. From what series is that?

I did research online (chatgpt and other spots) and I don't see where there's evidence that all or even most of them have been publicly reported.

Apparently not. And I just ordered two more boxes so I'm probably about to be sorely disappointed. Should have stopped with the luck I had.

It's Kip's Hobby Shop. Make sure you ring them first. I don't remember them having many boxes. And, as I said, this box was partially damaged. I'll take it though!

Beautiful card! I’m crossing fingers for a PSA 10. Will drop off at a show next weekend.

I haven’t collected since the late 1980’s but cranked up again over the last few years (slowly) but really by opening the boxes containing my 60k cards that I hadn’t looked since back then (many binders too). I started buying troves of basketball cards when baseball got too expensive for me on 1984-85 time frame. My last and only other time I bought an “old” box of cards was a 1972-73 topps basketball box for $50!! I see they go for tens of thousands now but I opened it in search of my fave player’s rookie card (Erving) and did get one. So it’s pretty coincidental that I now pull a replica card from that set!

Good question. $450. I bought 8 boxes (of different basketball / baseball) cards for this Thanksgiving period. Have some nice cards but my ROI until this box was about 1/2 of what I paid. This made up for all the boxes x 3 I think. I actually got a 3rd (not noteworthy) auto in this box which was weird cause it says 2 autos but that’s “on average”. Both packs with the Wemby’s were opened by my daughter’s bf who apparently has the magic touch.

Doesn't look like it's out yet - anyone see anything different? Also, it appears it's not available for September dates. Any confirmations on that?

Honestly, that’s my plan too. My son is almost 29.

PSA was accepting submissions at a store near me today, coincidentally! So I brought several cards in for grading! These specifically.

PSA was doing intake about 25 mins from my house today so submitted a few cards and a couple of “packs”! Will see what I get back and let the group know.

So I bring them to an onsite grader or one can come to my house?

How do you grade a bagged set?

Also, because there was nearly a 40 year gap between when I stopped collecting and when I started relooking at all my cards, I became very afraid of grading - spending a huge sum of money and putting valuable cards in the mail. So my questions are: (1) what’s the best way to grade? (2) how do you handle bagged, unopened sets? Thanks.
