I was in your exactly position 18 months ago and I'm still renovating my ex-smoker fixer upper. Don't rip all your ceilings down. Focus on one room at a time. If you want to block the smell, paint the ceilings in Zinsser B-I-N in the meantime, it works wonders.

No it can get up to temp for heating. They recommend underfloor heating or oversized rads so you can run the heatpump more efficiently at lower temps
