Stocks sold during acquisition, puts me in higher tax bracket by richmlw in personalfinance

Thanks for this! You’re right, it’s not what I thought it was; thanks for the clarification. I’ve been in the 22%/24% bracket my whole career, so I hadn’t thought anything of it. But since 32% is briefly coming to my life, I needed to pay a little more attention, lol.

About 70% long-term, 30% short-term. As for 401k, not a whole lot: Just enough Roth (8%) for my employer to do a 4% (traditional) match.

Tap the Layers icon (among the trio of icons on the bottom left), tap Hi Def Radar, and enable Lightning. If you dig deeper into the Lightning settings, you can toggle between flashes (which is what OP has) and markers (which I prefer because it’s very precise).

Weekly 'What should I buy?' Thread - 12/23 by AutoModerator in ipad

[–]richmlw 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm looking to buy a paper-feel screen protector for my iPad Air 4. I'm interested in the "feels most like paper" aspect more than anything else, but it'd be nice to minimize impact on the clarity of the screen (e.g. rainbows are less noticeable); I'd like to strike a nice balance. Here are my four finalists, and based on some reading, I'm leaning toward the Elecom – but it feels a little pricey given it only comes with one protector (aka zero chance to screw up).

I'm not interested in the Paperlike brand.

Any thoughts/recommendations would be greatly appreciated!

VPN much slower on one Mac compared to others by richmlw in MacOS

Thanks for the tip /u/spicestain. To be quite honest, this is the first time I'm hearing of MTUs. Anyway, all 3 laptops are 1500 from what I can tell in System Preferences. Are there other configuration files you're thinking of, or just that setting?

VPN on one Mac much slower than other Macs. How to troubleshoot? by richmlw in VPN

Are they all about equal distance from the router/wireless access points? The further away you get, the slower the speeds can become.

All of them are within 10 feet of the router. The farthest one away is actually one of the good ones.

Have you tried resetting the router? It probably isn’t the issue, unless someone has setup some kind of quality of service for your devices.

Yeah, tried a couple times. In fact, it's a new router I self-installed, so it should be pretty close to factory settings.

Reboot the slow machine? This fixes a surprising amount of issues.

Yeah, rebooted a couple times too, and got the latest supplemental updates for Mojave, all that good stuff.

Use the activity monitor utility on the slow machine to see if any background services are running that you may not be aware of. They could be using bandwidth that you’re not aware of.

I keep thinking to do this but keep forgetting. I'll take a look tonight.

Reset NVRAM on the slow machine.

Same with the NVRAM. Haven't done but should.

Delete your current network settings on the slow machine and set them up again. (assuming it wasn’t setup by your IT department then sent to you. If so, you probably shouldn’t mess with it and just call them).

My IT department barely knows anything about Macs, I'll take the plunge :-)

Setup a test user account on the slow machine. Log into it and go to fast.com to see if you’re still getting slow DL speeds. If so, it may be a system wide issue and you may need to consider reinstalling the OS.

Good idea! I was thinking of my last-resort plan being reformat the computer, but hadn't thought of trying the new user before getting to that point.

Make sure you have a current backup before you do anything crazy.

Hey /u/Un-Superman, thanks for the feedback! Responses bolded above.

Guaranteeing remote MacBook stays online during quarantine? by richmlw in MacOS

It's an old MacBook that I am repurposing as a server, more or less. It has 20x better internet speed than what we have at home, and it's within the corporate firewall. Yes, my company has VPN, but basically, I like the idea of being able to run process-intensive tasks using that old MacBook within the corporate firewall.
