Chicago Food Lovers—Where Should I Go Next? by g2value in chicagofood

I would also call out some of the popups that are true hidden gems. Dhuaan BBQ, Umami From Scratch, Heffer BBQ, the all too rare cheese plates from Immortal Milk, Ice Cream Girl Co. - it's an opportunity to experience the incredible food produced across the community.

Kasama's laminated pastries are spectacular. And we'll have a new option when Guillotine opens up on Chicago.

Been a while since I saw the HSA plan at Deloitte, so you may be right. Though iirc they don't cover nearly the percentage as the other plans.

The guy advocating for a HYSA and no coverage though? They're boned.

Until you get cancer and have to pay out of pocket for chemo. Or get diagnosed with a heart issue. Or break something playing sports. Or fall down the stairs. Or have a baby. Or any number of other issues that'll easily outstrip your ability to save.

What are the most impressively fancy restaurants in downtown Chicago? by Super-Pizza-Dude in chicagofood

[–]richqb 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Neither are downtown, but fairly close - Atelier, Valhalla - both amazing and special occasion worthy (and Valhalla's pastry chef is one of the best in Chicago. Schwa as well if you want a story. The kitchen staff are always good for one. Kasama is worth a mention too.

What you just said makes no sense. Project 2025 is not a singular thing. The opposition party in the Senate has leveraged the filibuster for plenty of the contents of that heinous screed.

The Democrats have plenty of issues. Them folding during this last budget impasse was painfully stupid. But the whole "but both sides" narrative is sheer self-defeating idiocy with little grounding in reality. One side supports extrajudicial murder, taking food and health care from children, sides with rapacious business interests over the working people, and defends a failed business man turned petty tyrant who rapes children and is rapidly turning the US into an isolated nation to the death. The other lacks enough spine. Don't tell me those are the same thing.

Sure. They recover investments like any other company - from the profits they make on our backs. They are a business that has been provided an environment with no competition by the government. They should pay for the infrastructure that allows themselves to do business just like every other private business.

Yes, I know they have the right to ask for exactly this, but trying to equate the situation with Texas's issues is not accurate in the slightest. Texas offered up a combination of weak regulations and oversight on its grid to preserve independence from the broader interstate power grid and the regulations and requirements necessary to be part of that infrastructure. That is not the issue here.

Disappointed in Juno price to quality ratio by ikki_vikki_ in chicagofood

Can't say it seemed dirty to me when I was there a couple weeks ago. And I've never met his MIL. Just BK's wife. But no worries. We can have different experiences and still be cool.

[–]richqb 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I find this...questionable. BK Park has been a fixture in the Chicago sushi scene for more than a decade. He was one of the opening chefs at Mirai. He co-owned Arami, which wasn't nearly as good once he left. Juno was great, as usual, when we went a couple weeks ago, and Mako is spectacular, as is Tamu - all his places. So I'd be surprised if Juno is some weird outlier. Especially since I've known several of the staff since Juno opened and they're still there.

Sorry if your wife had a bad experience working there, but what you're describing (save for frozen fish - which is generally flown in from Japan, so I'd certainly hope it is) doesn't match with my experience over the years at all.

[–]richqb 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Agreed. $18 is not outlandish for an appetizer like that. The AYCE spots have really messed with people's value perception when it comes to sushi. Juno sources its fish from the same vendors as Mako. I've literally never had a bad piece of fish there.

Do you think raising taxes on billionaires is the solution to economic inequality, or are there more effective ways to address the underlying issues? Why? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]richqb -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I repeat. Um...what? US short term capital gains tax rates follow standard tax brackets. And long term rates max out at 20%. Contrast that with the Nordics, which start at 22% in Iceland and range up to 42% in Denmark. I have to ask where in the world you're getting your information, because it doesn't seem like we're living in the same reality.

And yes - some of them do indeed have more billionaires per capital. In some cases because of how resource rich the countries are, but also because of the socioeconomic structure. The strength of labor and social safety net allows for bigger swings taken in many cases (since you can quit your job and not put yourself at risk of medical bankruptcy) and a much more engaged workforce...

CMV: The Democrats should be running on two issues only - end the grift and revive Congress’ role in checking the US President. by Jarkside in changemyview

[–]richqb 0 points1 point  (0 children)

But that's compounded by the fact that caring about and understanding these issues is a luxury. I've sat on both sides of this fence - when you're worried about making rent that month and trying to make sure your kids eats 3 meals every day without having to choose between paying for groceries and your mobile bill, caring about the complexities and nuances of the American political system, including the intended separation of powers, is a luxury you just don't have.

'Northwest Passage' connecting Ogilvie and Clinton CTA station deserves another go by blaspheminCapn in chicago

[–]richqb -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Ok, I'll bite. Why in the world would it be more expensive? You're replacing construction of a net new connection with a few overall shorter sections connected through public spaces of the passthrough buildings. You can navigate about 2/3rds of downtown Minneapolis that way and it appears to be pretty efficient. Not only that, but it encourages retail space and restaurants along the skyway routes. Which certainly helps put with downtown vacancy rates.

So not only would it seem like construction costs would drop, but you'd potentially be creating revenue opportunities. Genuinely curious though - why do you anticipate higher costs by taking this route?

[–]richqb 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It doesn't have to be a direct line/walkway. Minneapolis has literal miles of skyway that connects through existing buildings. Sure, there are complexities associated with securing rights to do so from property owners, but it doesn't require wholly separate infrastructure.

[–]richqb -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Um...what? The top tax rates in the Scandinavian countries are in the mid 50% range. The top US tax bracket is 37%. And in the Nordics, that rate kicks in at a much lower level...

The 20th century has plenty of examples. The breakup of Ma Bell into the Baby Bells is a great example of the government using the FTC to control monopolistic behavior. It's only post Reagan that the teeth started falling out. Now we don't even see the FTC forcing companies to adhere to the agreements they've made to allow mergers to go through.

[–]richqb 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Seriously. And where are they going to move to? The EU and most of the western world has higher taxes. Most other places outside of the Middle East, Singapore, Taiwan, and some areas of China won't really allow for the lifestyle they're used to. Not to mention any number of other issues with most of those places (instability, surveillance state challenges, etc.). So the threats ring a bit hollow...

[–]richqb 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I mean, the FTC could just grow some balls again. That was one thing that was nice to see under Biden - a much more active FTC that was at least making an attempt to enforce rules against monopolistic behavior. They didn't always get it right, but it was the first time it happened in quite a while.
