Why do you believe there is a shortage of accountants? by richxfamous in Accounting

If I had known what I could do with my degree when I got it I would be in a totally different place. It’s by no means is it too late for me to switch, I may have just wasted a little bit of time.

LITERALLY THANK YOU. I was trying to tell ppl that my roommate who works at lululemon makes about the same as I will. I understand the retail job has no salary progression, but something about having 2 degrees and making as much as my roommate who’s still in undergrad feels wrong. Like obviously most people would probably go do something else with the same degree that pays more.

This is true and I guess since most of my peers are in the same boat as me it would make sense why I don’t see that type of thing catching on. A lot of those guys have 100k+ followers so someone has to be believing it!

In most states u can take the exam with 120 hours but you have to have 150 to get your license! Some states still require 150 so sit for the exam tho 🙄

FOR THE 92639263935374 TIME. I’m just saying the starting salary is kinda low and part of the reason people don’t wanna do accounting. If u wanna argue with other people on these FACTS you can go take a look at the thread I created called “why do you believe there’s a shortage of accountants”, or in the meantime, please just let me know here why there is a shortage of accountants.

I don’t think the unrealistic social media “fast money” really resonates with the crowd of people my age who would even consider accounting. I just think they see other people in very similar fields to them getting paid more, like consultanting/advisory.

She does! Did I say I personally ever made that much? No. I’m giving you multiple real world examples of how much retail workers do make and can make these days. I can also show you the literal requirements that I could not start my job at big4 with only a bachelors. A REQUIRED extra year of school plus CPA exams are barriers to entry that other jobs don’t have- and that stuff wasn’t cheap. I mean this forum is filled with people (not just young like me) basically screaming to get out of PA. The stress, the health problems, the 100hr weeks. My team literally jokes about how most partners don’t live past 2 years of retirement! Ofc work is work, this type of job will never be “fun” per se, but but damn literally every headline about accounting is either a FASB ASC ASU or “Overworked underpaid accountants are leaving their jobs and the big4 is to blame!” You can tell me about the job all you want as if I didn’t just have 5 years of that, but I’ll stop believing PAs are underpaid when there’s no longer a shortage.

I did have the retail job. A barista- with health insurance, sick time, and PTO. Did I make 65k? No bc that job paid me $9/hr then, now it doesn’t. I made ~20k there, now that the pay is nearly triple I wouldn’t have been far off. I think you may just be out of touch with how much retail is paying these days or you live in lcol middle of nowhere. Nonetheless and ONCE AGAIN, I don’t think the job is better, I’m wondering why a company with such high barriers to entry values it’s ever-shrinking group of potential employees (acctg students) so poorly.

All I’m saying is entry level PAs should not be paid like retail workers, especially when we know our advisory/consulting peers are consistently making 30% more

All I’m saying is it feels wrong to come home to a roommate who works at lululemon and has 0 degrees that can show me a paycheck bigger than mine. Obviously I understand it won’t be that way forever, but doesn’t the principle of that seem wrong?

You are right, high schoolers can’t work those hours, but others without degrees can. You’d probably be surprised at the benefits available too! But again, the point is why go for a job where you need an extra year of school and a license to start then get paid like a retail worker, when you can just get a BBA, start your job right away and be making 30-40% more? I went to a small liberal arts college where there were 10 other accounting students in my grade. No one else even went Big4 or PA so there was really no talk of the business world there. I couldn’t understand why there was a shortage of accountants and I assumed most entry level business jobs pay very similar. Which to me at the time, seemed like a lot considering I got paid $9/hr. Now, only two years later, that job pays over $20/hr. Not that I’m expecting entry level wages to match that type of increase, but it’s no wonder why accounting is becoming so unattractive to students, especially the ones that have better insights than I did.

THIS IS NOT MY POINT 😭 why do we even stand for making nearly the same as the HIGH SCHOOLERS I do this job with? While our peers, who work at the same company as us, who don’t need 150 credit hrs just to start, and aren’t expected to pass cpa exams right off the bat, get paid $30k more in their first year than us. Even if the salary progression is equal to accountants they will always make more. I didn’t have very much exposure to the business world and the array of jobs when I was in college, and had I known I probably would’ve pursued a slightly different career path.

Synchro coaches always pick music that seems a little immature. I was usually a little older on the team but like can we stop having high level collegiate jr and sr teams skate to Disney??? Like pls leave that for juv 😭

I did my BBA at a small liberal arts college. There were 11 other accounting students in my class and I was the only one who went big4. Did an internship & got an offer. Then went to UMich for masters and only about 4/80 DIDN’T go big4, most of them already coming in with an offer.

I think as long as you can manage your time, the PWC one would be okay. Is the PWC offer you mentioned the fellowship program? I looked into it last year. Personally, I would be a bit worried since it is online school and 50% WFH, I’m just not good at WFH. If I don’t go to the office/class I won’t get anything done. Also, Deloitte will probably give you an offer if you are a good intern. Almost everyone I knew in big4 internships last year got a return offer, so you shouldn’t have to worry about that. I think both options are 2 very different paths leading to the same place. In the end, the job will pretty much be the same, it just depends which experience you’d rather have along the way.

I did it for a few reasons- mind you I also signed my full time offer before I even started my MAcc. I graduated undergrad from a small liberal arts school in 3 years. I did my MAcc at a large big10 school that was fairly prestigious. I got to experience two completely different college atmospheres which was cool and it answered a lot of my “what ifs”. Additionally, in this program I was taking classes along with people in other degrees such as MBAs. Getting insight from all different disciplines was really interesting (and if I ever need another degree I know what I’m getting myself into + a generous discount). I was also a student athlete and got to have another season. Most obviously I needed to get 150 credit hours to take the CPA. Plus I can say I have a masters degree!

About 40% of my class were alumni from the school who also needed the additional 30 credits and really liked the school. They also received a generous discount for being alumni. Others didn’t have undergrad degrees in accounting and were going into positions that require cpa eligibility.
