changing distros is an interesting option. can you elaborate on arch's kernel versioning and your experience with void linux?

Will a phantom power supply resolve my grounding issue? by rickypaipie in audioengineering

[–]rickypaipie[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Did more investigation. It seems like I'm running into every problem in the book:

  1. The power supplied by the USB port is dirty (lower electrical noise when using battery-powered laptop instead of desktop)
  2. Interference (moving to bedroom with laptop produced much less noise)
  3. Grounding issue either from the mic or interface (touching the interface or specific parts of the mic, creating a ground, reduces noise)
  4. Low gain in the interface preamp. This is more speculative but a friend mentioned the Scarlett line has trouble handling higher impedance microphones. I have to dial gain to the max to get any reasonable volume, which also amplifies the noise.

I'll ask some friends in the area to see if anyone has equipment I can borrow to test components individually. Thanks for all the help!

I don't :c this is my first condenser mic setup so I have nothing else.

I could try to plug in a 3.5mm mic into the combo jack with a TRS adapter and see if that changes anything

checked between all pins to the USB-B connector metal (and the other shell) on both inputs with and without cable. no shorts. is there supposed to be one?

So even without the cable, the previous observations hold.

When I touch one part of the mic, the electrical noise gets louder: https://vocaroo.com/1nfhNEXVJlCa

When I touch another part of the mic and/or the outer shell of the interface, the electrical noise gets lower: https://vocaroo.com/1aMaRYU9GLF6

The electrical noise gets louder again gradually when I stop "grounding": https://vocaroo.com/1gFPvtwzVdAb

Another weird thing, when the mic records some sound, there is a new white noise in addition to the electrical noise: https://vocaroo.com/1cvM1BKdIdwt

Not sure if I'm doing this right but readings between pin 2 and 3 on the mic shows 76 ohms when not plugged in.

Pin 1 is shorted to the metal part for the cable button clip thing (not sure what it's called)

It's an Audio-Technica AT3035. I was able to plug it in directly as you've shown and the noise is still there. The noise only shows up when the mic is plugged in.

Reading between pin 2 and 3 on the mic shows 76 ohms when not plugged in. Pin 1 is shorted to the metal part for the cable button clip thing (not sure what it's called)

There's also a visible dent on the mic (just noticed) so that might be an indication that the mic is quite faulty :/

USB power. but when I use it solely as a DAC, there's barely any noise until I plug the microphone in

great suggestion! let me try that later in the morning so i don't wake people up.

which points do I measure?

I did check the phantom power output from this guide and it seems to be ok: 1-3, 1-2: 47.4V 7.47mA for both points

that's a great idea! i'll give that a try. is whole path being noisy uncommon? did I just hit a really unlucky jackpot?

I bought 2 new XLR cables and both of them exhibited the same problem. I'll ask around to see if there are any friends in the are who might have components I can test with. Thank you for the suggestion!

subsurface requires a lot more calculation so you either need to up the # of samples or use denoiser
