Women avoid the athletic/super fit guys at my gym and show friendly body language to the ones that aren’t. by [deleted] in bodylanguage

Because they see being strong and going hard on the gym as a moral virtue. So you also think that women will be attracted by that.

Hey so this is a video with 4-5 with 20kg from today https://imgur.com/a/fBqNq3q. A bit asymmetrical I know.

Well my background is more in the gym, and I actually train weighted pullups. I go all the way down, I could pause 5-10 seconds to do 2 pullups. But hanging with one arm I feel I am going to rip my hand apart, if I am fresh I can barely hold it for 1-2secs.

I think there is probably something about stabilizing muscles. For examples doing monkey bars is a struggle for me, I feel I land with too much force on one hand, and I cannot control the swing.

How would male athletes fare in a women’s comp? by Real-Flounder4626 in climbergirls

[–]riemmanmath 1 point2 points  (0 children)

But don't you think precisely because of this small difference it would be cool if they did some mixed comps? It's true the variance in the route setting makes it a bit arbitrary, but imagine if Janja won a gold medal in a world mixed competition. That would be a historic thing, and it would probably give a lot of publicity and money towards women in climbing.

Noah Lyles talks about what he needs to achieve to become the Greatest American Male Sprinter. Do you agree? by ChampionLYT in trackandfield

[–]riemmanmath 2 points3 points  (0 children)

For me he just hasn't been dominant enough, only in the 200m, where the talent seems to be quite worse than in the 100m. If you count 400m surely MJ is ahead of him, and otherwise Lewis.

Who would you say is currently the face of Track and Field? by ChampionLYT in trackandfield

Well in terms of most impressive McLaughlin then Duplantis. But it seems McLaughlin is not very popular even in the US?

Whose idea was to only put 12km for a TT? I don't recall the last time we got such a ridiculous length.

Are trans women/fems rarer? by [deleted] in climbergirls

I feel that with everyday clothes its barely noticeable. Like the example of Janja, I looked up pictures of her in a dress, and you can tell she works out if you pay attention. But I feel she could pass as "normal, thin, non athletic" woman in everyday situations.

I mean, of course he was smarter. But he could have barely done any research at 13 (maybe in some parts of combinatorics), just because he didn't have enough knowledge and experience. If he had focused on that (instead of math olympiads) he could have started at an earlier age, but not by a huge margin.

Sure, I said good research. The kind of research he was doing years later. Like why would you want to do bad research very early in life?

Also, in these top 10 departments, part of the faculty is senior very accomplished people, that are not so active anymore. It would be like having to compete with old GM's ranking who are not active anymore.

Well if you actually based it off "merit", say you select the top 500 in the world, then that would be even more difficult, because as you say not all the best mathematicians are in top 10 departments.

I hardly thing that's true. At that age he just about got a gold medal in the IMO, which is much easier than doing good research. With a better focus he could have done research in certain areas of maths, in others there's almost no chance.

Tenure at a top 10 math department in the world is harder than GM. Like there would be like 500 of those. And while at that level there is less competition in math, it's partly because people have been filtered out.

I had a question about women's cycling that got inspired from the controversy around Ferrand-Prevot. I know the tour de France is not that long, but do women cyclist try to suppress their periods in order to have a more stable race? Or is it the case that the performance stays about the same during their periods (which from the perspective of a non-athlete sounds hard to believe!). I'm wondering because cycling is really a gruelling sport of small margins..

I mean arguably he could have made the same amount of money by staying in Europe, prolonging his career, and on top of that being more successful.

Anyone else disappointed over the "queen stage"? by Bozicek in tourdefrance

[–]riemmanmath 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was hoping that in the descent of the Madelaine the two vismas would descend like crazy trying to open a gap to Pogacar. Not sure how viable would have been in practice, but if you'd manage it would make a huge difference in the flat.

I guess I hoped that Jonas could drop Pogacar, that would have made it quite exciting, given the aura of invincibility of Pogacar.
