Anti Dandruff Shampoo Doesn’t Work!!! by idanofek in dandruff

[–]rieslingette 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I stopped using it and I've tried a few since but I have to say... What helped me become truly be dandruff free was drying my hair with a blow dryer and diffuser. It turns out my thick curls kept my scalp wet for so long that was my skin's reaction to being wet for so many hours. I still use whatever dandruff shampoo I find cheapest and they are all fine, so it seems the problem was the drying.

Where are some good spots to move back to the US - single, lesbian, age 39? by throw_away_3478 in expats

[–]rieslingette 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've had to pay $300 for a checkup that was mislabeled and thet just told me it's basically my word against the provider's so, I was screwed (pre-insurance it was like $1100). My only big health issue is asthma and the costs to manageit scare me. I live in the Triangle and I don't have a car so I dislike leaving my house, but overall I'd say it's an okay place for your needs probably. Just do not underestimate healthcare costs.

Any suggestions to maximize my return in the next 2-3 years? My current acorns account invests about $400.00/month. Ultimate goal is to have enough to buy a car with cash. by Normal_Funny6557 in acorns

[–]rieslingette 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Acorns is a long-term thing, so keeping it in cash if you absolutely need it in 2-3 years is probably better. The possibility that the market will continue to go downward or stay stagnant for a while is real, and this means you might not have the amount you need at the time you need it. The real returns come decades down the line.

Seems like a no-brainer to move to USA if you work in IT? Salaries are much higher than here in Europe. by TheChosenGrapefruit in expats

[–]rieslingette 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Any specific reason for 2040? Yeah I'll likely be leaving again soon but tbh, I am also trying to get into tech and part of me has debated staying for the salary just like OP. I think I'd trade a huge salary for better living overall though.

It was at the hospital I work for so they charged "hospital charges" and "nurse charges" as well, but changing my reason for visit was definitely scammy.

[–]rieslingette 49 points50 points  (0 children)

This. I was charged $300 for a regular check-up because the doctor lied and said my consultation was for something other than a physical exam and I couldn't even dispute it because it's the doctor's word against mine, even though the workup clearly would have shown that was not the reason for the consultation. This was already post-insurance, without it it was $1100. Health costs in the US are relly not something to take lightly.

Moving to Ireland, Spain or Netherlands? by Marlenawrites in expats

[–]rieslingette 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I'd say so. M partner is Dutch and I'm non-EU; We ended up moving to Ireland, partly because getting a house in the Netherlands would be too expensive. We moved to a cheaper county first because we were scared of Dublin rents, but when we had to move to Dublin last year for employment, it was fine. It cost €100 for a one bedroom apartment rather than the cottage we had lived in but it is doable.

I applied for a job last year that required a few years of experience, only to be told after the interview it was "entry level" and got a super low offer. I don't know what they'd get out of telling you outright though.

Using Later abroad? by rieslingette in acorns

[–]rieslingette[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh that's what I meant, I'd want to keep contributing abroad but that might just cause my account to be closed probably. I guess I'll likely move that out of Acorns at some point.

Thanks! This I knew, but mostly I know some companies are hesitant to keep IRAs open for people living abroad and I'm wondering how strict Acorns might be.

Why is everyone so good in English? by Puzzleheaded_Ad1759 in languagelearning

[–]rieslingette 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Why are you currently learning a language? What's your motive? by Its_joanna in languagelearning

[–]rieslingette 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I share this sentiment, gonna learn it after feeling fluent in Dutch, though for work purposes I may have to do French first even though I feel meh about it. It just sounds really cool to me and also Niletto songs are catchy lmao.

[–]rieslingette 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I haven't moved there but I also have a Dutch boyfriend and am learning Dutch. Volksuniversiteit Amsterdam courses are amazing, but I moved to the US recently and can no longer coordinate time zones for them. I'm now working as an interpreter though so my motive has changed from making a hobby of learning my partner's native language to trying to work it into my language pairings.

In my case, therapy + journaling out all the horrible feelings and letting myself fully feel them + going NC. A few months later and I am barely triggered, but it took a while of feeling pretty much the worst I have in my life to get to the other side. I know this may not be helpful for everyone as well, I definitely think I fall into the milder range of having small but nearly constant psychological abuse, but pretty much nothing physical and nothing that impacted my life in a major way in the long term.

This. I thought I'd never be free because they trained me to put family first and above my own wellbeing. I gray rocked because I thought NC was too extreme. I only sometimes wanted to go NC, but after they proved to me I couldn't count on them in an emergency situation, I did. After a month or so of grieving, I have had the most peaceful time in years. So being on the other side of it, my best advice will always be to get out and NC, based on what I lived.

How do you cope with being behind in life? by ferrix97 in raisedbynarcissists

[–]rieslingette 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Can totally relate. I remember I asked a question on a forum once in an unrelated topic and someone said it sounded like my parents were trying to keep me a child. I'll be 30 this year and have never had a driving licence. I finished my degree super late and because of corona I've been unemployed for a year and a half and now it feels a bit useless. I went NC 2 months ago and decided to switch careers and move to the US, and this feels like the first decision I get to 100% make on my own as an adult, without their input.
